likely the door has been locked on Hartford returning to anything above the AHL Wolf*Pack;

Chuck Kaiton unequivocally said "No" WHEN asked directly if the Whalers would ever resurface in Hartford even if Carolina owns the Whalers trademarks..... Kaiton then said, the NHL wouldn't be interested in a Whalers revival @ XL Center
The NHL was never going back to Hartford. We’ve known this for decades.

According to a reputable NHL source, it is believed that the Winnipeg Jets attempted to put together a package for Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.

Earlier this week, the Hurricanes snuffed out all trade speculation with the signing of Necas to a two-year, $13 million contract.

Necas, who reportedly was growing disinterested in his contract situation and usage with the 'Canes, opted to sign a bridge deal in Carolina and will look to prove his worth over the next two seasons.

Although initially opting to go the salary arbitration route, the team and player managed to hammer out the details on a contract that will pay the 25-year-old Czech product $6.5 million annually.

This contract, according to Frank Seravalli - president of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association - came after the Hurricanes received "at least" two separate offers in a package for Necas.

“There were a couple of deals that had been offered that were considered,” Seravalli said on his Daily Faceoff rundown podcast“That ultimately weren’t enough for the Carolina Hurricanes.”

According to Seravalli, of the two other teams involved, the deals apparently didn't materialize as Necas had no desire to sign on with one of the clubs.

There was one team for sure they had a trade agreed to,” Seravalli added. “And Necas would not agree to sign a new deal with that new team.”

Despite most believing that team to be Winnipeg, Seravalli said he understood it to be the Buffalo Sabres.

The other trade involved the Winnipeg Jets, but that one also fell through - in somewhat of an 'eleventh hour' shakeup.

“There was another deal on the table,” he said. “I believe it was Winnipeg. I think Winnipeg offered Rutger McGroarty, Cole Perfetti, and some pick.”

The Hurricanes, however, stood pat and sure enough, signed Necas to a two-year deal just days later.

Winnipeg, which has yet to sign Perfetti following the conclusion of his entry-level contract, has put the young forward through the ringer on an up-and-down season that saw multiple trips to the press box near the season's end and playoffs. He did streak for goals in five-straight, but later fell out of favour of head coach Rick Bowness' watch.

McGroarty, on the other hand, has also been rumoured to be unhappy with his development path. Having seen fellow college teammates jump into the NHL and make immediate impacts, the Jets' idea of AHL development clearly set him off in a way that appears to have permanently severed his ties with management.

McGroarty did not skate at development camp in July and was actually expected to be dealt around the time of the draft. That obviously did not happen, but this latest revelation indicates that the Jets are not messing around in their hopes of moving on from 'difficult' players.

McGroarty was selected 14th overall in 2022, while Perfetti went 10th overall in 2020. Necas was taken 12th overall in 2017 by Carolina.

I stumbled across Brendan Perlini's YouTube channel, and have enjoyed it. I don't know if he's wanting to follow in Paul Bissonette's footsteps and eventually have a career in broadcasting, after building a following on social media.

So far he's very low-key and down to earth, and says he's just doing it for fun.

Here's a recent video detailing an NHL road trip. He said in 2019, a player's per diem was $110 a day, and only had to cover one meal, since the team provided the others.

He also said as a visiting player, while one never enjoys being scored on, he liked the chants of Nashville fans. Just lots of interesting tidbits.

The KHL keeps lowering the bar

By The Canadian Press
Posted August 8, 2024 9:01 am.
Two of the five former Team Canada world junior hockey players awaiting trial for an alleged group sexual assault in 2018 have signed contracts with teams in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), according to the league.
Dillon Dube is listed on the roster for Belarus-based Dinamo Minsk as being under contract through May 31, 2025, while Kazakhstan-based Astana Barys announced Friday that Michael McLeod has signed a one-year deal with the team.
Dube, McLeod, Carter Hart, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton were charged earlier this year in connection with an alleged sexual assault at a London, Ont., hotel in 2018.
They are all charged with sexual assault, though McLeod also faces an additional charge of sexual assault for “being a party to the offence.”
The case is due back in court on Aug. 13 to potentially set a date for trial.
McLeod, of Mississauga, Ont., played with the New Jersey Devils last season, while Dube, of Golden, B.C., played for the Calgary Flames. Both were granted leaves of absence in January and had their contracts expire at the end of the season.

I have never really understood the replacing a captain move with guy still on team

If you're going that route i would have traded Tavares. Unless his contract is untradeable.

John… they may take the captaincy away from you.

But you got to be the Captain of your favourite team for five years. Five years you led your beloved Leafs to annual disappointment and fan dismay until finally being scapegoated for the C on your sweater as the reason your childhood heroes slip and fall in puddles of their own incompetent shit every single postseason. And that’s something they can never… NEVER take away from you.

I have no idea who Matthews is as a person and leader behind the scenes, but it’s obvious that the Leafs were never going to deviate from this plan. Like, on what planet were the Penguins not going to name Crosby as captain? The moneymakers (in terms of fans in seats) are going to get that role regardless of their “evolution as a leader”, as Leaf media has put it.

All I know is they have just as much to prove as when Auston arrived eight years ago and it’s not going to be a pretty legacy if they can’t get over that hump. God forbid they don’t win a couple rounds in one of the next few years.
