Glad there's some actual movement with this, as I was afraid it was going to be one of those " lost in the shuffle " cases. The woman is going to have her time to prove what she said happened and the players will have their time to prove they're innocent.

Gotta be honest - I'm trying to be more sensitive. I grew up in a time when we used names and nasty characterizations really irresponsibly and callously. It's clear that in many cases that sort of "guys being guys" behavior had a real negative impact on a lot of people. I think as a whole I'm much better.

I'm also particularly aware that the stresses of life and impact on mental health are way worse than when I was a kid and WHOLEHEARTEDLY support people getting any and all help they need. God bless.

However, let's say someone had done something egregiously bad to a young lady - something that is inhuman and indefensible, something that goes way way beyond the pale of calling someone a derogatory name. Then let's say that the police were finally, after an excessively long time, going to make arrests of whoever was involved in the potential serious law breaking related to that young lady??

If, emphasis on if, that person then used the excuse of needing time to deal with his or her "mental health" as a strategy for dealing with an impending arrest and being publicly held accountable for those disgusting actions??? Well, I've got to revert to my old poor behavior and say if that was the case, then that person is a massive f***ing p***y.

If not, and that person has nothing to do with the assault on a young lady, then my thoughts on this are irrelevant and I go back to wanting nothing but the best for this person.

My nose is to the air, though. Something smells distasteful.
I am 100% with you. Using mental health as an excuse pisses me off more than I can express.

At this point, we just need to let the entire thing play out.

Exactly. I hope I'm wrong. Perhaps someone who's been giving info to the police but not involved needs mental health support? That I get.

BUT, if it's the other scenario????

Yeah hopefully they aren't using that as an excuse. The only other thing I can think of is maybe someone found out someone they were close to the team is one of the people suspected and need support.

That's the justice system in the north here in a nutshell. You can pretty much axe murder someone and then toss out the mental health card. "I see you brutally murdered someone, but yeah, I know the last year has been stressful. 2 YEARS for you!"

It is f***ing maddening. Mental Health is a disease not a cart blanche excuse that you pull out of you back pocket whenever you feel like it.

My cousins son is a goalie playing junior hockey in Maine. He’s very good and even got an invite to USA development camp when he was 16.

He‘s now 20 and is “only” 6‘0 tall and according to my cousin doesn’t have much of a chance to play D1 college because they’re really only looking for the kids who are. 6’2 or taller.

That's a real shame, both for your relative and the people who are caught up in that blinkered thinking. Being 6 feet tall is still above average height, and regardless whatever height you are, to me if you're good enough you're good enough. Tim Thomas was 5'11, so is Juuse Saros.

The Maine connection makes me think of Swayman, who certainly never had to worry about size but did have other obstacles and ploughed through all of them. Hopefully your cousin's son can have the same attitude and success in proving doubters wrong. Good luck to him!

My sister is a school psychologist, and tells me the same. Life was definitely simpler for us when we were growing up.

life was simpler, but we're also doing a better job catching these kiddos that need this help earlier. Where they might have ended up criminals, suicide risks, homeless, miserable adults etc, we have a chance to support them.

I don’t buy it for a second, honestly. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t believe I am.

Going forward, this will make others who really need it hesitant to seek out help. There’s now an association. Imagine not taking action to cure oneself because the act of doing so makes the world ask “well I wonder who THEY assaulted?”

It’s f***ing bullshit, genuine or not honestly. Don’t give a reason. Even if you’re innocent and confident you can prove it, just keep your mouth shut about it. Saying it’s about their mental health (even if it is) is egregiously irresponsible thing to do when you know this news is coming out.

Didn't Hockey Canada already clean house this past summer?
Yeah, IMO that's a saving face type of move, maybe that will be enough for IIHF, I'd imagine if these guys end up being proven to be guilty that there would be more punishment coming though.

I loved Ryan Smith, but... here we go again.

The Beehive State.

NHL ownership and league office are TRASH.

They would walk over their dying grandmother for a buck.

Good for her. Brave girl. I hope she gets all the support she needs and deserves. I hope she is ok.

Speaking as a father of a daughter I hope those lawyers behave and she’s given the same “innocent until proven otherwise” leeway the are no doubt claims for their clients. Seen too many young ladies dragged through mud in these sorts of things as if THEY are responsible for what happened.

Maybe I’m biased in that regard, but it makes my blood boil. If my son (and I have one too) was involved in the shit show this is he’d have no hair on the back of his head from me grabbing him by the nape of the neck and screaming how could you be so stupid and such a shitty human. Thankfully that‘s a fantasy scenario because, well, he‘s a decent human being.
