Prospect Info: 2023 1st Rd Selection - #28 OA (via BOS, WSH) - C, Easton Cowan [London Knights, OHL; [Height 5.11 -- Weight 185]

Knights consecutive game scoring record now belongs to the Cowboy, 26 games 20G 29A.

Cowan is second in team scoring with 77 points over 44 games. He's 5 points behind Denver Barkley who has 9 more appearences

Its looking like he might be a good one and his Leafs rookie and training camp was no mirage. Hes been playing 5v5, pp, pk he is doing it all for London who are leading the O and maybe heading for a Memorial Cup.

Can see the meltdown in Leafsnation if Cowan pulls a MM draft +1 season, bc people will be arguing over who is the better former Knights. My vote goes to Domi, lol.

Steal of the first round. Kid looks like a version of Marner. We gotta keeper, he’s gotta be as untouchable of a prospect as we have had in a while. Not trading this kid for anything short of a star player

I think he's another example of why we can't whine and complain about every draft pick 30 seconds after they are taken. Especially when some spent 30 seconds reading Bob's top list or watched one TSN draft hit and had their minds made up. Or just checked HockeyDB for stats, height and weight and it didn't meet their criteria.

I'd be fascinated to see who Tre would've picked if he were still in Calgary, and how much of a role he had in the Cowan pick here when speaking to Leaf vs Flames scouts. I don't expect we'll ever know.

It did seem like Cowan was a typical Dubas player which is why I think people were annoyed lol

Tre saved us from the stupid sandin trade. Cowan > Sandin eventually
Can't tell if you are serious or not.

Getting a first for Sandin was some shrewd business. He is a LD. Is he playing ahead of Rielly, Brodie or Benoit right now if we have him?

He has now getting ice time , even some PP in Washington. He has 18 points (14 ES) all season. He is a large minus and he is not driving possession either.

I don't think Washington could get a late first rounder this year for him.

I also think this was a Wes Clark pick and not a Tre pick. I really don't know you could suggest otherwise.

Treliving mentioned after the draft he had no input in it.

Would Cowan be eligible to play for the Marlies next season, or is he ineligible? If so, why not? If he isn't, does he go back to junior or do the Leafs based on his camp decide to keep him, if he isn't eligible to play for the Marlies? Thanks

It is Leafs or back to London next year for him.

I see a lot of Cowan. He’s an amazing OHL player who plays an exciting brand of hockey that this market will love.

Those projecting him as an NHLer right away will be disappointed imo. He’s going to need time to physically mature to play the style of hockey he plays.

Let him bake

I would say the GM has little input on the specific pick - unless it's an move up/down scenario. The GM sets the tone, of the type of players he values. Or if he wants his first round pick based on position rather than BPA. Think Burke wanting pugnacity, testosterone, truculence over IQ and skill. So we ended up with a bunch of picks that are big tall and strong with low ceilings, and little to no shot at making the NHL.

I would agree. Maybe give him a few game taste of the big leagues like they did with Minten this year but I would send him back to the OHL next year.

Is his scenario much different than marner though?
There are 127 NHL players 185 lbs. or less this year.

From everything I've seen he's bigger than marner at the same age.

Cowan 1.75 ppg
Barkey 1.55 ppg

Dvorak 2.05 ppg
marner 2.03 ppg
Tkachuk 1.88 ppg

For me - it’s no.

I’m admittedly not currently a professional scout.

LOL at the takes after this kid was drafted from literally almost everyone.

And the Sandin crowd is even funnier.

He's like a smaller Leon Draisaitl, dudes going to terrorize the Atlantic division for years

These twitter stats guys are awesome. Saw a lot of this stuff on draft day. So many factors not taken into consideration.

It really is a good read on X.

I don't get out to scout players, so I might be as accurate by looking at numbers without context.

Give the guy a budget maybe he'd do some first hand scouting?

I've no idea what metrics that particular guy is using in his model, BUT it's worth noting that the broad consensus at the time was he was a bit of a left field selection

The Leafs must have some interesting things for their internal modles
