Where do the Yankees keep finding these guys that can throw these absolutely gnarly high velo sinkers and where can I find some?
The Yankees apparently build their bullpen like I do in The Show lmao.
Most of their pen were nothing acquisitions or cast-offs.
King: acquired with international bonus money from the Marlins for a pair of nothing prospects.
Holmes : acquired from the Pirates for a pair of sub-replacement utility infielders. He had mostly sucked with Pittsburgh
Peralta: Acquired from the Giants for bench bat Mike Tauchman. He had mostly been a fungible, replaceable middle reliever through years with the Giants and Reds
Marinaccio: 19th round pick of the Yankees in 2017
Luetge: Had several forgettable years with Seattle as a Rule 5 pick, then bounced around the minors through like 5 orgs for several years before he was signed by the Yankees
Castro: Was famously part of the Jays' package to ship out Jose Reyes and acquire Tulowitzki. Went through Colorado, Baltimore, and the Mets with up-and-down years (though rarely better than "acceptably above-average-ish"). Was acquired from the Mets by the Yankees for sub-replacement reliever Joely Rodriguez
Schmidt: The Yankees' 2017 1st round pick. Had been decent in the minors but lit up in limited big league appearances before putting it together this season
Loaisiga: Pitched a year in the Giants system after they signed him as a free agent, vanished to... somewhere for like 3 years before he was released by SF. Then caught on in the Yankee system where he was a mostly unimpressive starter with lots of short stints from year-to year and eventually transitioned into more of a swingman/pen arm.
Green: Acquired by the Yankees from Detroit for mediocre pitcher Justin Wilson in like 2016 alongside mostly-crap reliever Luis Cessa. Was mostly unremarkable until a couple years ago where he put it together.
Outside of Britton (who hasn't pitched in a year because TJ) and Chapman (who's reaching the end of his useful life as a reliever and is hurt right now), their pen is 1 failed high draft pick, 1 lottery ticket late round pick, and a bunch of unremarkable-acquisition castoffs from other orgs who suddenly flourished.
It's not total dumb luck because obviously they're doing something right in targeting these guys, but it's not like they're out there picking up pitchers with tons of shine and promise. They're doing what most teams do which is go after guys with interesting tools and seeing if they work or not.
