fWAR gives him a positive grade which suggests that he is decent at framing. He calls a trash game, can't throw out runners, and his offense is due for a regression to below replacement level (unless something changes in his approach).
FWIW, pitch calling was also McGuire's biggest weakness. OTOH, pitch calling is arguably Collins' greatest strength, to the point where a negative value defense Collins might honestly be better behind the plate than a positive defensive value Heineman because his calls will be better and he clearly gives a better target.
Having our 4th string catcher on the roster so that our backup can DH when we need him to catch is ridiculous. We either need to DH Kirk and deal with the possibility (the remote possibility) that we could lose the DH or use someone else there. If Capra can play 2B (I don't know if he can), I would love to see us play Espinal at 2B for a game, with Capra at 2B and Bichette DH.
We didn't go after a bat to keep our roster flexible then threw it entirely away on carrying an extra catcher.
