WJC: 2022 Team Slovakia roster talk

What's with the sudden, and welcome, resurgence in Slovak hockey?

Has there been some improvement in player development or is it just a happy coincidence that highly talented players like Slaf, Nemec, Dvorsky, etc. are emerging at the same time?

A couple of things. It has been 20 years since we won the Gold in Goteborg. So this generation (date of the birth + 3,4 years, which is common that most hockey players start their careers at age of 3 or 4. And 20 minus 3 and you get circa birthdate of Nemec, Slafkovsky, Mesar, Dvorsky ) is the first after that Gold medal. It made ice hockey more popular and a lot of parents wanted their childs to become hockey players.

Secondly, the group of angry parents founded the academy hockey club called "svište Bratislava". They were pissed off because of the lack of modern hockey methods that are common in northern countries. A lot of players have been in touch with this club during their upbringing.

And this is just my feeling, but it looks like that GM's of 1st hockey division have stopped being that possessed with results and they have started gviving chances young players rather than hiring old foreign hockey players.

Sykora is too good to be buried in bottom 6.

I agree with most of this, just a few line switches I’d make. 4th line has lots of possibilities with some guys who may not make it because of physical parameters (Dvorsky, Faith, Molnar).

I’d probably go like this with forwards:
Slafkovsky - Demek - Chromiak
Ciernik - Myklukha- Mesar
Kaslik - Petrovsky - Sykora
Baco - Dvorsky/Repcik - Jedlicka

I dont think Dvorsky will be on 4th line. He will play 2C most likely.

Head coach Feneš mentioned in a recent interview that he sees Dvorský and Štrbák playing in both HGC and WJC. HGC will be played from Jul, 31st until Aug, 6th and WJC from Aug, 9th until Aug, 20th.
Feneš said they had a plan how to use both players in both tournaments with priority being WJC. I guess both players will be playing at the beginning of HGC and then depending on the results both will sooner or later join the team for WJC. This means also that Dvorský can miss some matches at WJC. But there is no way he will be not playing when healthy.

Knazko suffered a knee injury against Edmonton. Not sure how serious it is, but that would be a devestating loss for this team.

Edit: he is back for the third, so let’s hope all is good post game too

Seems like other nations are leaving off their top guys. Of course we could be different but I wouldn’t be shocked if the teams that draft them have other ideas. Not necessarily a bad thing either, may allow room for other 2004s and 2005s.
If other teams are leaving off their top guys, that gives us an even better chance to grab a medal, I hope we take the best team we can. And this is still a good competition for them, they’re both just 18, not like it is some massive drop for them in terms of quality of play.

Slafkovský stated in a recent interview that he would like to play at WJC and hopes for a clearing from whoever will draft him. At this point it's quite sure that the NHL organizations that draft Slafkovský, Nemec, Mešár, Sýkora, Petrovský and perhaps Jedlička will have last word about their participation. If none of them get cleared which I don't expect, Slovakia will switch from a possible medal contender to a relegation candidate.

Does simply being drafted give an NHL team the right to block a player from the NT? Wouldn’t they need to sign at least an ELC? I can see Slaf and Nemec signing an ELC over the summer, but not so sure about the other players.

You are completely right about the legal aspect of the issue. And I see also zero chances for a contract for all mentioned players apart from Slafkovský and Nemec. I'm not sure if there are any development camps in the summer and if they play any role as for the decision of the players.

There is no relegation in August's tournament as far as I know but we have also other bunch of quality players so I would be not afraid of this

Slaf and Nemec would likely be the only players that NHL teams would say “we would prefer to have you with us in x city preparing for camp than in Edmonton.” Mesar, Jedlicka, Sykora will all be there for sure. Our team is still strong enough without Slaf and Nemec to potentially upset a top team. We left some guys off the December roster that can still be solid contributions

I am not sure about Nemec and Slaf, I am leaning towards them not being there but I have zero idea what NJ and MTL will say. If they aren’t, and Stacha is still injured I’d run something like this. Is Jedlicka fully healthy, I heard something previously about injury but maybe I am wrong?

Chromiak - Myklukha - Mesar
Kaslik - Dvorsky - Jedlicka
Sykora - Demek - Ciernik
Misiak - Petrovsky - Baco
Honzek

Knazko - Becar

Mosko - Strbak
