WJC: 2022 Team Finland roster talk

The most surprising thing about that selection is how unsurprising it is.

This is the size of the final team roster, yes? No further cuts to make?
Could be there is. The present roster strength is 22+3 while the maximum length of the WJC roster sheet is 20+3. Well, unless some additional names are allowed because of the COVID situation - but I couldn't find any indication of that on the tournament's player entry page.

EDIT: This recent article says the roster limit is 25 (so 22+3) - IIHF - Sense of optimism . So I guess the tournament format page just features old copypasted information from way back when. So yeah, it's the final selection.

No Rajaniemi is the only surprise.

We will never know for sure, but some other coach might have preferred having for example Rajaniemi, Vilen, Jurmo or Sedoff on the team instead of Nurmi, Määttä, Ottavainen or Heimosalmi. There were plenty of decent options at the back end.

Lovely roster. Going to be able to roll 3 strong offensive lines.

Räty and Helenius are obviously centers, but can someone who knows better tell who are the likely to be the other two? Doubt they'll play Lambert or Hirvonen there?

Probably 2 players ( who are those guys? ) will be cut before Germany game.
But is someone Finland's team management officially said / announced that
this roster is official Finland's U20 WJC team without any cuts?

This is a 25 man roster, and I've seen it said that the rosters for the tournament this year are 25, not 23

Hyökkääjät:

Joakim Kemell, JYP
Ville Koivunen, Kärpät
Brad Lambert, JYP

Olli Nikupeteri, Luleå (SHL)
Sami Päivärinta, Lukko
Aatu Räty, Jukurit
Kasper Simontaival, KalPa
Kalle Väisänen, TPS

Looks OK to me but few weaknesses there are.
- Goalies looks passable but who is clear number 1 starter?
- Center depth is weaker than last year who's offensive leader and who's number 1 center.
- Defence looks fine but is there enough size, toughness, physicality and grit
to stop and eliminate Canada's and USA's scoring forwards
and who's clear number 1 stay at home dman
who's job is clean puck out of Finland's defensive zone.

If this team wins quarterfinal game i'm happy.
No talks for medals before quarterfinal is played.

One of the goalies is the hottest one in Finnish league right now and another one was just selected as the goalie of the week in OHL.

I know know, small sample size and I'm trying to paint black to white here, but potential is there. If they can continue their form until Christmas I'm happy with what we have.

No complaints, i was a little afraid that they would drop a offensive guy for some grinder or whatever, glad that didn't happen.

Prediction:
Simontaival - Räty - Hirvonen

Would be surprised if this is not a line, that being said I'm open to move Hirvonen to C but that probably won't happen since Pennanen seems set on playing him on the wing

Kemell - Helenius - Koivunen

I'd like to see Kemell and Koivunen play on the same line, both think the game at a high level and i think they would compliment each other nicely. Helenius feels like the obvoius C choice.

Mäenpää - Kapanen - Järventie

This line success will depend much on Mäenpääs ability to drive play on the small ice since both Kapanen and Järventie like to finish plays more then to make them. Lambert is a choice here too but he will need to prove it.

Väisänen - Määttä - Nikupeteri

Classic checking line, i don't know who is the better player between Määttä and Päivärinta but i lean towards Määttä as the 4th C because NA experience and better physical toolbox.

Defence is harder..

Viro - Niemelä

You either split them up or play them together, i choose to play them together, we need these two to log a ton of ice time against the best teams

Nurmi - Puutio

These two played together in all three games in the four nations tourney in november, should be able to handle business

Rafkin - Heimosalmi

The few times i have watched Rafkin this season i have been impressed, he's had a sense of "calm" to his game and have not overdone things. He will be a good partner to the young but talented Heimosalmi.

Blomqvist
Meriläinen
Jatkola

Blomqvist and Meriläinen will probably take turns during the group stage and then they choose one for the elimination games

Has anyone before ever pulled a Raty at the WJCs, i.e. make the team as 17-year old, then not as 18-year old despite not being injured, and then come back again as 19-year old?

Seems rare

Andrej Golian for Slovakia made it in the same fashion. Played as a 17 YO, didn’t at 18, than made the team as a 19 YO. However I assume it’s even more rare for an actual drafted player such as Raty.

Eemil Viro left the game yesterday after injury. No further information about his condition.

Hirvonen - Räty(A) - Simontaival
Järventie - Lambert - Koivunen
Mäenpää - Helenius(A) - Kemell
Nikupetteri - Määttä - Väisänen
Kapanen, Päivärinta

Viro - Niemelä(C)
Nurmi - Puutio
Määttä - Heimosalmi
Rafkin - Ottavainen

Blomqvist
Meriläinen
Jatkola

1st line seems to be set in stone, 2nd line has huge potential to be serious threat but big bust potential too. 3rd line; Helenius takes care of the defensive responsibilities, Mäenpää createst chances and Kemell buries them. 4rth line is basic shut-down line. Coaching staff is same as was it last year, except M.Koivu replaces T.Ruutu as a "team spirit coach"

Good team, i smell yet another gold medal.

Or middle-6 could also be:
Järventie - Helenius - Lambert
Koivunen - Kapanen - Kemell
