As much as Clarke is exciting and has a lot of what the Kings D seems to need, I am hoping he gets another year to develop. I don't mean they do that on purpose. I mean that a full season of DD, development of Durzi, Walker returning, offensive increase (Fiala, Byfield, AK, etc.) and PP improvement......all of that makes Clarke not such an immediate need and he can get his 9 games cup of coffee and then continue to develop & get bigger/stronger for next year Day1. Maybe even it's a mid-season thing after we trade Walker (showing he's healthy and has value) and others to make room for Clarke. Hoping he makes the team when he forces beyond a doubt versus we absolute need him & his game.

If you plan on having a young guy be on the team, you pretty much have to deliberately open a spot for him, and especially do it earlier in the offseason. Back in the day, Belanger was traded in late Sept to open a spot for Kopitar after camp, but that was a specific deal. Carolina wanted help today, as defending champs, and were willing to trade a recently drafted #3 overall pick because he was going to stay in college another year, and the Kings didn't care about that. Also throwing in their own younger d-man to Carolina to more equalize the value. And the Kings took Tverdovsky's contract back too.

If Carolina was ok with Johnson staying in college, I don't know that the deal happens. He was JMFJ at the time.

To make room for Clarke now, you have to find a team that wants, whoever, Walker, and the contract, and has their own open spot to fill on the roster at this point. Likely sending nothing back, since the Kings have too many bodies. Or, send Walker, and his $3m salary, to Ontario. With Wagner's $1.4m already there, that's close to $5m in cash for AHL guys, who you didn't think would be in the AHL when signed.

It is pretty dangerous to make any predictions about roster spots based on one rookie game against a team with arguably the worst prospect pool in the league.

Fans of Buffalo (and some other teams) seem to be interested in Walker.

Yeah I mean obviously it has nothing to do with his body of work and everything to do with a one-off game on a Friday afternoon.

Come on, Tom.

The funny thing is that I wasn't referring to any player in particular. Some people say Byfield is a bust b/c he got no points yesterday; others say Clarke is as good or better than a future HOFer. It's silly. The truth is that rookie games mean nothing. At the Traverse tournament there was a guy who scored 4 goals yesterday and that will probably be his career highlight. I've NEVER been swayed by rookie tournament performances either good or bad. Sure, it's something to talk about but keep it in context. Many of the guys playing in this tournament are never going to see even the ECHL.

Well thank god you're here with this disclaimer that we see literally every time these players take the ice outside the NHL.

Yes, we get it, we are all collectively working with the assumption that we are discussing these things in context.

Sorry if I'm extra snarky about this, your post was pretty harmless, just sick of seeing it for every tourney, scrimmage, practice, etc. It's just getting old because it fits with the summer-long theme about 'worthy of discussion' and 'be careful of sample sizes,' I think we're discussing around each other long enough that we should for granted needed a disclaimer.

Carry on as you wish.

Actually it’s the first time I’ve even heard of this Clarke kid, I’ve never read anything about him let alone watch footage. Boy, was he good though…. 😂

In all seriousness he stood out by a mile. If you’d have asked which guys had played NHL games (without any idea) Byfield would have been a pick and you would have assumed Clarke has also. It was a continuation of performances that show he’s as ready as a player can look without actually having played NHL games.

Hard to believe Turcotte has a future playing hockey at this point. Seems like his eggs are scrambled. Hope I'm wrong.
Agree, just super disappointed at how things have gone for this kid. At this point just hope he remembers his name. What a shame.

Meanwhile, the Montreal game in their rookie tournament, featuring this year's no. 1 draft pick Slafkovský, can currently be watched entirely for free on YouTube: :help:

Kings organization is seriously the worst when it comes to showcasing their young prospects to their fans. We can draft the second coming in Bedard and no one will know and see his talents, compared to what other cities do. LOL. But I guess that just goes with the city.

Was looking back over the roster to see if there was anyone I missed, three random observations

I really really hope Bennet Rossmy stays in the org

Heard Landon Kosior's name a LOT, gonna have to look him up a bit. Edit: huh, seems like one of the players that may be a late bloomer/underscouted due to covid years? not huge but good movement, seems like at least an AHL talent maybe?

James Stefan looked like absolute hammered dog shit, was a little surprised considering his pedigree.

We should be happy that Clarke looked great. And Byfield not scoring is allowed to be a concern. If it’s earned, you have to accept it.
