Columbus? Really? The only thing I can think of is that he REALLY didn't want to come here or Long Island.
Flames fans/organization have every right to be absolutely LIVID.

Anyone saying we dodged a bullet or he wouldn't be a good fit here. Please give me a break. Putting a guy that just had 115 points next to Hughes would have been absolutely perfect and would have been a great thing for Jack Hughes himself.

Here, I still just don't know about the fit, Fitz goes and says he wants to add size and then goes after Gaudreau? I think you've just got to make a low offer and hope he wants to come close to home. I said there was more in NJ both competitively and otherwise than Columbus. Both of those are objective fact - if you have a different perspective, by all means, share it with us.

Calgary themselves openly said Gaudreau leaving was a "family" decision and every association with him has been between Philly and Long Island. Ohio is decidedly not a short commute to the New Jersey area.

So from that, we can make the educated assumption that this was a money-motivated move that we didn't match. It certainly wasn't about hockey OR family.

If that's the case, can someone outline a plausible case for Columbus over us? Serious question, if it's that "he just didn't want to sign with us", what's that push and pull for Columbus versus us? There's no part of the equation from my vantage point that leads in that direction. So the logical conclusion to draw...is money.

That’s not the logical conclusion to draw. That’s the easy conclusion/assumption to draw. Doesn’t mean it’s true at all.

That contract would have been a problem in a few years and wouldn't address the biggest needs of this forward core anyway. Not worth the risk.
