Former Kings assistant GM Mike Futa told an amusing story from the 2009 Draft when the Kings and Coyotes were sitting next to each other. LA was taking Brayden Schenn but they knew how much the Coyotes wanted Oliver Ekman-Larsson. As they were on the clock, Futa told one of the staffers to apply the Ekman-Larsson nameplate to a blank Kings jersey and to do it so everybody at the Coyotes table would see. Kings staff quietly laughed at the reaction from the Coyotes table. Phoenix's recent high picks were all forwards so they momentarily thought they were going to have to take another one.

Letang and Crosby are the indispensable men for them to remain competitive for the next 2 or 3 seasons. In spite of their age. They each have 2 to 3 seasons left at their current levels of play. The Penguins were reasonably good this year and really should have beaten the Rangers in that first round. They looked better against them than Tampa did.

I think the only thing keeping Sid from being a top 25 player until he retires is his health. Otherwise, I think he's Lidstrom-esque as far as dragging a mediocre group to a better fate, especially with Guentzel around.

They're doing everything they can to extend/maximize their window to win with Sid. Future be damned. They signed this deal for the cap hit. Years 4-6 are irrelevant to them.

They'll be fine for the regular season. If goaltending falters, they'll trade for someone at the deadline.
