WC: 2022 IIHF World Championship Division I (group A: 2–8 May and B: 25 April – 1 May)

The question is rather the opposite — how long will China continue in the KHL now that its only real purpose is to show support to Russia in a complex international situation. The players will surely stay as long as they get paid.

They should leave KHL and join Asian League. I guess those North American Kunlun players don't want to support Russian league and play there anymore.

Slovenia is the greatest minnow hockey nation of all time bar none.

300 registered players in the country which includes beer leaguers

Not to mention the ability to produce an Anze Kopitar in that environment

I'm not sure that's going to be a big issue, a couple of guys might choose to leave but basically it's a choice between the KHL and the ECHL for most of them. It's a lot of privilege to give up for your principles even if you happen to have some.

I'd argue that by joining the Asia League — while ostensibly reasonable — the situation would become more complex because then the organization would need to have an actual plan for the future. What are they going to do when the imports aren't there anymore? An all-Chinese team isn't good enough for the Asia League either. In ten seasons the China Dragon won 33 games in the league, lost 369. That with some decent foreigners in the roster no less (even Claude Lemieux for a few games).

Dalton era apparently coming to an end. Will have fun forgetting his last name.

End of an era indeed... Have fun getting relegated next year, Korea. 2/2 against them in D1A, 3rd time will be fatal :sarcasm:

I would also like to give a shout-out to the Slovenian arena announcer, his ability to pronounce Lithuanian names/surnames is impeccable.

haha, noticed the same. The way he pronounced Ugnias Cizas sounded perfect.

it's been fun to be at this level. yes Dalton era comes to an end. so do for the other parts of the 2018 Oympic squad that's been instrumental in our recent success. sad to see them go but it is a time. next year will be brutal but i hope this will be good experience for our new boys.

btw our penalty killing was painful to watch tonight.

Congrats LTU ! Not just win, but they outshot Kor:clap:Too bad they didn't steal point or two against Hungary, as in that case they could match their best performances in this group from 2006.

The Koreans to my knowledge haven't been playing any serious hockey since the start of the pandemic, so them collapsing wouldn't be a surprise at all.
the rinks had been shut down for several months. Asia League was cancelled two seasons in a row. An Asia League club was folded. No senior leadership at the KIHA over the last year and a half.

Koreans have actually exceeded the expectation with no foreign imports other than Dalton whose level of performance is quite below his prime. He has made lots of mistakes this tournament.

Honestly, during the Romania game the biggest saving grace for you guys was that their PP was garbage-tier. Otherwise, it could have gone either way as well.

I mean lets face it, old D1 wasn't nearly the same, we played against Poland, Estonia, Netherlands and Croatia that time. It was just the luck of the draw.

Do you have any insights into your current U20/U18 generations? You guys did great, those would appear to be some of the best ever.. Are there opportunities for those guys to become serious pro players in Korea at the moment?

I have some hopes for this year's U18 team that just won D2A a month ago.
Some of this generation have potential to become what the local senior products were during late 2010s.
it is just unfortunate that our infrastructure is just too limited to support their growth.
we only have three professional teams (2 of them are obvioulsy far below Asia League- level); no Army team after 2018 doesn't help the case: every Korean male must serve for the country for 18+ months (I served for the Korean Air Force for 24 months).

Best. Soundtrack. Ever!

e: was referring to the polka/oberkrainer theme, thought they would stay with it :)

Hungary looks kinda terrible. I expected this to be a closer game but the only thing that's reasonably close is the score.

There goes any chance of a Lithuanian promotion (assuming I had understood IIHF 3 way tiebreakers correctly, probably not). Would have been nice for a new country to be there for the first time.

korea could get imports while playing in asian league. so could china.

It would have been embarrassing for both us and the rest of the hockey world, we literally have 6 professional hockey players. I mean if semi-pro teams play in the elite division hockey is in really bad shape. Arguably it has happened before but not nearly to the same extent.

You guys literally just held Slovenia to a 2 goal margin and Hungary to a 1 goal margin and those are nations going against the Elite division next year, it really wouldn't be that bad

Slovenian actually sounded surprisingly like a Baltic language to me when I heard it. It made me even understand the "Balto-Slavic" language branch more.

Lithuania with the 5-4 win over Romania. Close game from the parts I was able to watch.

This means Hungary is going back up to the top division for 2023, while Romania drops to IB.

Yeah, not really how I would have drawn it up but oh well, all is well what ends well. I think the game would have been a lot different had we scored first. Felt like there was a lot of nervousness after falling behind.

I wonder how high in the sport-news this tournament is in the countries which are in this tournament.

Pretty big in Slo. And even if tourney was played elsewhere it would still be nr 1 sports news today.
