2022 Hlinka-Gretzky Tournament (Canada Wins Gold)

It's not because it's written somewhere on the internet that it's a social norm LOL. I don't give a single shit about this, neither should anybody. I'll use frenchie/frenchy all I want. 45 years, never used it or was used to describe me in a negative way. Pixie dust, fugazzy, magic. Stop the nonsense, soon the whole dictionary will be off-limit because it can be used in a derogatory way. Apple! Widget! Words!

Now let's come back to a conversation between non-fragile adults about the Hlinka tournament.
I mean its historically derogatory and if you want to bury your head in the sand to the abuse that canadian francophones have suffered since the changing of allegiance you can do it, its not required of you. I dont have this sympathy for anglo-imperialism, personally.

Oh you didn't get the memo for modern day internet politics? As soon as one person gets a chance to be offended about anything it allows a group of other people to virtue signal their moral high ground and cancel their newfound enemies. Being offended about anything is now off limits cause we're such a virtuous species but there's always a need for new things to be offended about, can't let things get stale and all.

...I blame Millennials...cuz...they're Millennials...

John "Frenchy" Faqua was a popular NFL running back in the 1970s for the Giants and the Steelers who's fans were called "Frenchy's Foreign Legion ." I guess times have changed.

It has nothing to do with being sensitive as a generation either. These issues run deep and date back much further.

Im not sure why using terms like "Times have changed", "I blame millenials" or whatever is regurgitated insults like in the first post even exists. Generalization of a generation, now talk about an aneurysm, I hope youre all okay.

Or you can just move on. I'm from Quebec City, there is no limit to this "using the past the gain current respect" thing - newsflash, it doesn't work. Build stuff.

Would you consider yourself offended by the term or offended on behalf of someone else?

I don't think anyone is having an aneurysm about this and if there was someone hyperbolizing the discussion it is most definitely you.

I dont like the term as a franchophone for sure. Its yet another diminution of our culture.

See, if i was latino and you called me amigo…should I get offended lol

This world is f***ed
That's the same as buddy, mon chum, compadre, and more. I've never heard frenchie uttered by other than Englishmen. Frog, I never really understood, what's the connection? Same with blockhead, tête carrée.

Old joke from the 60's.
Why does it cost more for an Englishman to get a haircut? Cause they have to cut around corners.

...eh...I get why francophones could find "Frenchie" derogatory; it's been used as a slur by non-francophones for a long time...amigo is literally Friend...anyone finding that offensive can kiss me old fat arse...

...it was a joke, you know, cuz I'm old and cranky...but hey, get offended and blow things out of proportion, as per usual...

...we are "soft" as a Society now; not that we didn't and don't need to improve drastically cuz we do...however, the Grievously Offended At All Times Generation needs to tone it down about 12 notches as well...

...and just to get it out there, I'm not of Anglo-Saxon/English descent...my heritage is almost 100% Gaelic; my ancestors were the Anglo-Saxon's punching bags long before anyone else was...

...it should give a lot of other prospects that wouldn't get enough attention time to shine...I'm looking very forward to it and I hope Joshua Roy absolutely kills it...
It almost feels like a gimmick tournament to me...which I suppose is what it is when it simply exists to recoup lost revenues from the canceled holiday WJC. I'll likely watch much of it to pull for Habs prospects but I'm not feeling like getting the pom-poms out given the silly timing and the crap going on with Hockey Canada.

I certainly enjoyed watching all the high-end 2023 draft candidates in the Hlinka tourney.

...it is kinda but these kids deserve the chance to show off their skills...just turn off the brain and watch good hockey...:thumbu:

Frog is because people in France sometime eats frog (and is derogatory).

Frenchie depends on context, Mathieu Perreault was popular in Winnipeg and his nickname was “Frenchie”.

It’s like “mister”, saying Mister Smith is polite but saying “hey Mister” isn’t.

Frenchy is nothing to me. Claude Raymond’s nickname en passant.

Frog, different story.

Yes, in that it's not normal to hear derogatory terms for French Canadians or non-white people anymore, at least outside of hockey arenas and sports forums. You do hear some people complaining about "wokeness" when others don't agree that things were better when minorities were oppressed.

Long term oppression leaves scars, and if the worst people without such scars have to complain about is that they get flak for derogatory terms then they don't have much to complain about.

Times are better. Here in Quebec violence was not required to improve them (employed counter-productively at times). Be happy.

This board is by far the most sensitive people I have ever been around. Constantly looking for insults. Good grief.

Anti-woke warriors crying loudly about how soft everyone else is when they get called out for their nonsense is never not funny to me.

My great-grandfather's nickname was Frenchy. He had a tavern in Val-d'Or and was a very well-liked dude in that town. I don't think it was seen as a slur at all. Edit : just climbed back all the the way to the post that caused the discussion and the way @Goldenhands used it and the fact he's a québz, to me isn't controversial in the slightest (in my opinion but I think most francos would agree).

Frog is a "slur" but since it's mostly spouted by butthurt squareheads it's music to my ears :P

Lol your so funny. That leap in logic is spectacular, as if coming out against the attitude is the same as committing the nonsense. You don't know me, keep labelling and we'll see where that leads you.
