When there was talk that even if Lalonde was fired, he wouldn’t be fired mid-season, I argued that the Wings should absolutely fire him mid-season so they could see how their players perform under a different coach with a different system; that it would give them a better idea of what their assets were going into the off-season, whether their guys were underperforming due to circumstances or due to talent.
This is exactly what’s taking place now. We’re finding that guys like Marco and AlJo can thrive in the NHL, and that guys like Compher, Ras, and Holl are probably always going to be held back by brains and talent regardless of the coach or system. That’s huge for team composition plans going forward. We could’ve traded Marco for Cozens, used AlJo as a trade throw-in (or worse yet, waived him), or wasted money buying out Gus if we had held onto Lalonde throughout the year. Now we have a much clearer picture of what we have and don’t have. Thank god.
