Erik Erlendsson who's pretty looped in still doesn't seem extremely worried which I guess is a good sign? Hopefully this lights a fire under the lightning's ass to get something done.
Pretty f***ing bullshit that ncaa prospects have this much leverage, team invests all this time and money into these players and they can just threaten to not-sign if they don't get their red carpet rolled out for them.

JBB needs to get it done but I also get that we're in a very important race and there's not really a clear spot for him unless you're dumping him on the fourth line. Hopefully this is just Howard using his leverage and not set in stone.

CHLers and European Pro route players can run out the clock, they just have different reasons for not doing so. And it's all going to change with CHLers now NCAA eligible, presume we'll have (at least) 4 year rights holding periods for everyone drafted.

I will believe it when I see it on Howard walking. But if he does, then f*** ever using a high pick to draft an NCAA player again. Like ever again. This will be like the 5th time this has happened with college picks. Thankfully none of the guys who wouldn't sign with us weren't really a that good.

Every team will be drafting more NCAA route players going forward with CHLers now NCAA eligible. I don't think you can just avoid drafting 40% (and potentially 60-70% in the future) of the player pool.

The only positive possibility is Howard's agent/advisor leaked this in order to turn up the heat on BriseBois to clear cap space & get Howard in the lineup for NHL games this year.

i think alot of this "game" JBB is playing is because he expected MSU to be in the frozen four and was banking on saving him for the Buffalo game on sunday when he has the cap available. with them losing earlier than expected it threw a wrench in his plans. JBB didnt have a backup plan kinda like how we never have a backup goalie thats good, so now we are in a stare-off with one of our best prospects in a long while. Hopefully things get resolved soon and we see Howard signed by next weekend and all is forgiven.

Which is probably the most likely thing. There's only a few games left to wait before we make the signing. The Lightning aren't gonna drop a guy like Atkinson or Chaffee just so we can wait a little longer anyway. I'm not worried about this. Friedman has no idea what the hell is going on. He is either talking out of his ass or it's a leak to keep the Lightning honest.

Frozen four would have ended on Saturday so he would have been signed Sunday assuming all went to plan. i think cap wise its Monday or Tuesday

My guess is that Howard & his agent/advisor wanted a few specific guarantees & BriseBois couldn't do that, so either they're leaking info with a threat to go back to State for his senior year in order to get a desirable outcome

Looking at Puckpedia, if we send Atkinson down friday we would clear out $32,813 of cap. we can then sign Howard to a 2 year 975k ELC which would count for $30,469 towards the cap. If we sent Atkinson down today, it would clear $42,188 and we would have to wait till tomorrow to sign Howard where his cap charge would be $40,625

not to be too much of a doomer but i do think that tampa probably isn't thrilled with the way that Howard's camp is handling this either

i mean, you always draft BPA. always. no one can foresee the future, so you make the decision based upon the information you have at hand, and all things considered, i don't think the lightning expected howard to be available to them with a late first, he was ranked the 9th best american skater in the draft.

Idk dude, it feels like whenever there's report of turmoil like this it never works out - look at McGroarty or Gauthier

oh for sure. howard's highest value to us was at the TDL, and word is that he was getting a lot of requests, so JBB not moving him this year for more help COUPLED with the potential to lose him for less next year (or nothing at all) is a pretty poor performance by the picks hater.
I dont think we're at a gauthier style situation yet, but we're not out of the woods yet.

Nah king. We won't. At worst we will pivot and get back into the 1st round of the next draft. You mean to tell me the (likely) Hobey Baker winner who is all ready to go isn't worth like the 19th overall pick who is gonna need 2 or 3 years and is no guarantee to be better than Howard?

When the Lightning were about to make their pick at 31, there were just a few guys that you could make serious arguments about being 'Best Player Available" & thus draft: Isaac Howard, Jagger Firkus, Seamus Casey, Lane Hutson, and to a lesser extent, Ryan Chesley. I was very happy they got Howard who I had as a top 15 talent before the draft. Hopefully this gets resolved and he gets signed but it doesn't look good at all.

it's a little more complicated than that, since if he goes back to MSU, he won't be available to any team prior to just before the playoffs, and they also have no guarantee that howard won't just wait a couple more months for FA and get to choose his destination.
im not saying we can't flip howard for something, but he will have lost some value in trade for sure.
