Prospect Info: 2022 31st Overall Pick | LW Isaac Howard

Not a great game from MSU, but some of the analysts were saying not to sleep on Cornell. Not the best game for many on MSU, including Howard, who had 1 assist but was also a -2. Guess we'll find out soon enough if he chooses to sign or try one last time for a national title.

If I'm him, I'm looking at this Tampa team.and thinking why on earth would I wear a stupid green little spartan logo when I can wear a lightning bolt and play with Glendening and Girgensons? Easy choice.

Kind of where I was going with that

The Pairwise has never really done anything for me other than stacking the initial deck at the beginning of the tournament. And obviously the Seasonal Sorting Hat. So I am never really all-in on the Pairwise. That’s just me though.

Cornell’s got a pretty respectable overall first round record and been within a win from the Frozen Four the past two NCAA’s. That said, the Toledo is Michigan State, Ohio State, and BU (along with Cornell).

Not gonna lie, and I certainly don’t want to jinx it, but I’m pretty sure MSU (and Ike) are going to take care of business, but they better not overlook their opponent. A Cornell squad that’s been chugging down the road the last six weeks and well motivated in that their coach (Shafer) is retiring after this tournament after 30 seasons being behind the bench.

Where have we heard/seen that before?

Excellent call!

I expect the ELC signed today, maybe by Sunday at the latest. If he doesn't sign by then, a little concerned, but will try to be patient. Hopefully Erik Erlendsson has a report about the latest updates today
You know, after sleeping on it overnight is Ike that guy who could not let this first round exit go and decide to come back for a fourth year? As in I’m returning for unfinished business?

It just makes me wonder. Does he decide to go Pro now and leave this behind him or does it weigh on him and figure he’ll still get the same opportunity next year to go Pro?

It reminds me of the scene in Animal House with Pinto and the Devil on one shoulder and the Angel on the other

Selfishly, I hope he signs his ELC in the next 48 hours. But just couldn’t help but think this out loud if he decides to return to MSU.

I don't think BriseBois will let him return for his senior year due to the risk of Howard running out the clock to August 15 UFA. We don't want our own Kevin Hayes situation that Stan Bowman and the Blackhawks royally f***ed up in 2013-14.

Also, Howard is likely a Hobey Baker Finalist. No guarantee that his stock will be higher next year if he goes back to the NCAA, I think he signs now, gets 3-4 games with the Lightning and then has to earn a spot next fall in training camp.

This is where my thought process is. JBB could have texted Howard's agent that we have a contract ready to go at any point in the last few months. It is known Khalessi. Unless he made the decision already, we're probably at "Ike will reach out when he has made his decision"

I have to imagine he is making up his mind as I am typing this

I wonder how his NIL compares to what we can offer on an ELC, especially if he’s in the AHL next year.

Say it’s over $100k, which doesn’t seem unreasonable. AHL deal would net him ~$80k. If I’m Howard, why am I giving up money when I could wait one more year and then have the option of signing anywhere I want? I would need assurances that I’d get time in the NHL.

The league needs to figure out the two-way structure of ELC’s moving forward, because they’re unfavourable compared to NIL.

I would be shocked if he even gets that much in NIL but who knows

AI generated:
Assuming the player is on a maximum ELC deal ($950k NHL salary) and has an $80k AHL salary, they would need to spend approximately 4.28 days on the NHL roster to earn an additional $20,000 compared to what they would have earned in the AHL during that same period.

Since players are generally accounted for in full days on the roster, it would effectively take 5 days in the NHL to guarantee earning at least that extra $20,000.
I think we can beat 100k in NIL money.

Update on Howard from a good source, Isaac didn't have a great game yesterday but I do think that it's worth giving him a look this year. The upside of him being a mild contributor would be huge, especially considering we've been running 11/7.

Said in an earlier post, maybe the kid digs the college scene. ( post #157 ).True college hockey NIL is much less than FB and BB. But the NIL involves a lot more than what the college offers in tuition and scholarship benefits.

I mentioned Caleb Williams, USC. A sure fire top 5 pick after his junior Heisman Trophy season. He went back to school. He was enticed by multi million dollar deals with United Airlines and Dr Dre Beats endorsements.

Maybe there’s rich alumni and boosters that can offer Howard far more than the Lightning can. Car dealership, restaurant, retailer endorsements.

Know nothing about MSU hockey. Could the team returning next season be stacked. And Howard feels a sense of family. Plus the money. Prioritizes that over playing in Syracuse.

Hope he wins the Baker and feels it’s time to move on. He is a special talent. Hope he gets to play in a Bolt uniform THIS season.

Nice update.
I'd be honestly baffled if JBB doesn't sign him & they don't try him out in the show this season. We are all in (and we'll still be for a couple of years) so burning a year of ELC is a sacrifice to be made. 1 year of his ELC is just like draft picks, not valuable to us in the current moment. And with a raising cap it's not that big of a deal if his ELC ends in 2027. See if Howard has an impact and steamroll every single opposing team if he does.

I don't think MSU has the same fervency as the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans would need rich boosters who specifically care about hockey.

I don't think that NIL money will become as much of a thing in hockey because the rich booster type tends to go for football or basketball. If they're decently rich, they can just buy into a minor league or junior hockey team. Same deal with baseball. The independent era is sort of over, but there's a ton of minor league teams. Becoming a football or basketball owner? Much harder.

fun fact: I actually own several footballs and basketballs, but you don't see me bragging about it.

If he doesn't sign I don't want us to draft a collegiate player ever again. Massive heartbreak
I'm pretty sure he's going to sign but if he didn't.... Yeah. There has to be a good 4 to 7 guys over the years who just said "nope" for whatever reason. My hunch has always been we start negotiations off with "You're going straight to Syracuse" instead of the coaching staff to making that call. And these guys have done enough bus rides in college. I wouldn't want 3 years of college and then the Gage Goncalves career path either.

If Howard says no then there's got to be some sort of red flag with us that makes college players not sign here. Imagine my relief when Duke signed
