I wasn't watching but it sure looks like Utica's best period of the season so far in Toronto, up 2-0 with a 20-7 lead on the shot board.

EDIT: Apparently it's only 1-0? Someone on AHL.com or the scorer messed up.

4/7/23
Utica Comets 5 Toronto Marlies 0

Forwards:
25 Foote/ 26 Schmelzer/ 8 Hsawryluk
15 Gambardella/ 28 Pinho/ 12 Thompson
90 Ibragimov/ 21 Stevens/ 92 Clarke
55 Geertsen/ 77 Talvitie/ 79 Laberge

D-Pairs:
23 Wotherspoon/ 7 Nemec
65 Hayes/ 5 Russo
75 Groleau/ 22 Walsh

Goal: 50 Daws

The Comets played the kind of game that can see them defeating anyone.
They were in the Marlies' shorts on every inch of the ice.
They got the puck out of their zone with teamwork, crisp passing (finally), and shooting the damned puck instead of looking around, setting up the puck to take a shot and getting it blocked, deflected, or worse yet stolen.
In most of the games they've won, they got scoring from the guys who have been leading them in that department all season:
- Stevens, after a long layoff from injury that saw him leave the lineup while trailing Clarke in both goals and assists, but biting his heels in both categories, got 2 goals
- Clark, the top man in goals and points scored 1 and assisted on 2 others.
- Thier keepers were stellar. Daws recorded his 2nd shutout of the season and several were real tough saves when the Comets gave the Marlies some big chances.
- They didn't let the Marlies dominate their end. They attacked the puck carrier and blocked passes and corralled the loose pucks and got them up ice and out of the zone instead of turning it over multiple times.
- They forced the Masrlies into turnovers in their own zone allowing the Comets to pressure offensively peppering Dennis Hildeby, Toronto's 2022 4th round selection out of Sweden playing in his first NA pro game, with 42 shots - 20 in the 1st period when he stood tall. They added 16 more in the 2nd and he wilted under heavy pressure.
- They didn't try to simply hold off the Marlies for the entire 3rd period and sit in their ownn zone and try to play D. They worked to get the puck out of their zone as quickly and efficiently as possible and followed up by getting it deep in the attacking zone and then forechecking and maintaining puck possession for as long a spossible and then hounding the Marlies as tried to bring it up ice.

It was a a very well played, hard earned team win in a game they desperately needed to stay right in the thick of things with Rochester and Syracuse who played each other for the 2nd time in the 3 nights. Syracuse won 3-2 Wednesday and Rochester won 3-2 tonight. Unfortunately for the Comets both of those games went to OT so both teams got 3 points out of the 3 games.

Utica still sits in 4th:
Syracuse 78
Rochester 77
Utica 76
Laval lost to Cleveland and the Monsters moved into 5th with 69 Pts 1 ahead of Laval at 68 and an extra game to play.
Belleville is still hanging in there with 66 pts. Every one of these teams other than Cleveland has 4 games left to play.

Utica hosts Rochester tomorrow.
Laval is in Syracuse.
Cleveland is in Belleville.

Every game these teams play is the biggest of the season at that point and the next takes precedent over the last in importance. Syr, Roch, and Utica are all trying to avoid finishing 4th as that would mean they have to play a 3 game series with the #5 team to advance to the actual 1st playoff round. Winning it then means you get to play Toronto in a best of 5. To. has been coasting along playing playing everyone on their roster to insure their top guns are well rested come playoff time.

Game Recap:
SOG:
Marlies - 7 9 4 = 20
Comets - 20 16 6 = 42

PP:
Marlies 0/0
Comets 1/4

Scoring:
Gorleau (2) from Ibragimov (3) and Clarke (30)
Stevens (13) from Wotherspoon (16) and Nemec (18)
Walsh (8) from Clarke (31) and Foote (14)
Clarke (24) from Schmelzer (27) and Hayes (3)
Stevens (14) from Nemec (19)

3***
#1 - Nico Daws (Utica Comets) 20/20
#2 - Nolan Stevens (Utica Comets) 2 G
#3 - Graeme Clarke (Utica Comets) 1G / 2A

How do they give up 4 goals in the third again? Honestly, how has Schmid looked? He can't be so strong in the NHL and this bad in the AHL - it has to be just a crap team. Right? RIGHT?

Also where are halonen and holtz?

He's also had a slightly larger sample of games played in the AHL this year than he has in the NHL.

He's been a little more streaky in the AHL. He had a pretty rough stretch after they sent him back the first time he played a while up here, but then he followed that up with a pretty good stretch. He got bombed for 8 goals in his last game in the AHL before he was last called up to the NHL and has now been kind of weak again since once again being returned.

.905% is probably around league average this year in the AHL, if I had to guess. It's probably in the neighborhood. Not sure what a league average would be this year in the AHL, but it's .904% this year in the NHL.

serious goal-scorer’s instincts there. He spends that whole sequence looking for the soft spot and drifts right into the perfect place to receive a pass as the defense shifts
That's how he scores in the WHL. It's effective at every level.

Clarke also had a nice pass to set it up. Should have a good camp and preseason next year to hopefully get some NHL games in.

Schmid was not in goal for the last 2. He was on the bench for a 6th attacker. Having the worst PP in the AHL (32 of 32) doesn't make things any better when they empty their net. It's even more likely they will fail.

Halonen has had a non hockey health issue which has been dealt with, but he is most likely done for the season.

Holtz has a different type of non hockey issue. He has an illness that will take time to recover from. He'll be fine, but it will take some time. Also likely out for the rest of this season if what I hear is accurate.

Their loss will be a huge hit to the Comets post season chances which were not good to begin with. Comets have 3 games left and still haven't clinched a spot in the playoffs. Their magic # is 1. Rochester and Syracuse are in along with Toronto.

Toronto 88
Rochester 79
Syracuse 78
Utica 76
Laval 70
Cleveland 69
Belleville 68

The battle for #5 is just as crazy as the battle for 2 or 3. You don't want to finish 4th and have to play a best of 3 to make it in while the other rest. Then if you win that, you earn the right to play #1. 2/3 will be a dogfight to the nth degree no matter which 2.. Whoever of 2/3/4 ends up in that one, the 2 have been playing each other all season long in what seems like at least once a week. These 3 have played each other much more than any other teams in the North.

That’s a terrible break if Halonen and Holtz are both out and not coming back.

Utica plays the Monsters on Friday, April 14, which is also the Blue Jackets last home game.

Blue Jackets have a ton of injuries, so they likely need to call guys up, and these are games where teams typically call up prospects to show them off to fans anyway.

They had four emergency call-ups, including Jirecek and Trey Fix-Wolansky (their top scorer), for the home game vs the NY Rags on the 8th, which was the 1st in their Fan Appreciation Week series. That game was the same day as the Monsters game vs Belleville, which Cleveland lost.

All in all, the Blue Jackets play in Philly on the 11th, then at home on the 13th and 14th.

Cleveland plays on the 10th (7pm home), 14th (7pm away in Utica), 15th (5pm away) and 16th (3pm home). That schedule is pretty brutal, the weekend games are b2b with Rochester. Hopefully they’re calling guys up on the 14th.

Obviously the two games against Syracuse are both more important and tougher. Unfortunately everything is basically peachy keen in Tampa and none of the game days overlap.

Tampa plays their last two games at home on the 11th & 13th. Syracuse plays 12th (Utica), 14th & 15th (Utica).

Seems weird to lock yourself into a 25 year old guy with mediocre college numbers but maybe they love his off puck game.

One advantage to signing an older player like this is that while he may have the benefit of long experience in college, he won't but up against the veteran rule any time soon, whereas that's not true of other players his age. But yeah, the numbers are underwhelming - feels like a guy who will spend most of his time in the ECHL.

Not scoring a lot in college doesn’t mean you play in the ECHL. Kevin Rooney didn’t score a lot in college and he didn’t play a single game in the ECHL.

True. I thought Rooney signed an ELC but he didn't; the Devils signed him to one to call him up. I kinda had Chase Stillman penciled in as the 4th line RW. Feels like that's a weirdly competitive spot on this team.

Friedmann played center in Quinnipiac, his scoring went up when Skylar Brind’Amour went out and he got to play higher up in the line-up. (Did a little quick Googling to learn more about our new Comet lol.)

Must be an AHL signing since NJ didn't sign him.

Maybe a depth player for 23-24. This guy may be 25, but he has played for a very good hockey team and has not recorded any kind of impressive numbers. I'll wait until next season to weigh in on this guy (sure can't call him a kid). If he is to be a future Comet center, I'm not going to stretch out the red carpet any time soon.
