Literally no one hates him, we're just honest about his ceiling and we also understand that "wins" is not a goalie stat.
Sol has been slamming the guy non-stop since he got here and it is old. Sure he's not the darling of the fancy stats gurus but the dude did us a solid and bailed us out of the Quick/Cal hellscape our season had devolved into.
Cop is a solid backup goalie, never touted him as a Vezina candidate. We are really fortunate we have him. Maybe he didnt "Win" the games the way you like but Quick and Cal sure as fck were losing them.
Korpisalo is clearly the better goalie, for the record. I would like to see him getting a larger share of the net.

What does that have to do with me saying that Korpisalo is the better goalie? I'm usually pretty critical of goalies, and Copley at the time was the best of a bad situation. No doubt about that. He helped the team. That doesn't change the fact that he is at best an average goalie. Korpisalo is definitely better. I think you saw a goalie who wasn't as bad as Quick/Petersen and conflated that as him being a good goalie. He was better than Quick and Petersen by a mile because both Quick and Petersen were playing comparable to ECHL goalies.

And no, I didn't slam him nonstop. I only became critical when people were talking about extending him like they did with Petersen just because he was playing well in the moment.

Don't get it twisted.

I picture Axl as a kid playing one note on the piano til his parents lock him in his room :)
Pretty much. He's the same guy who still holds out on the notion that Marco Sturm was terrific. I made a safe assumption that Kempe was playing over his head on a contract year (happens all the time), and that he wouldn't replicate that.

Here he is, and he's replicated it. Glad he did so. I didn't think he would since he had a history of being very inconsistent.

Its not a problem as long as he admits it, like he did when he was wrong about Kempe , Copper, me being you and his 79 other bad calls the last three seasons
If I was to document all of the bad takes you and Axl make it’d make the Bible look like a short story.

Hop off my Johnson

Todd went back to Durzi on the off side, and what do you know, six goals against.

@Sol just put the cheerleaders on ignore. 85% of the board has them on ignore at this point. They’re like children clamoring for attention.

Eh I think I will. I like to expose myself to the crazies but that’s never done me any good when I was dating eons ago.

I’ll do it now.

1st GA, Uncontested in between the dots at the hash mark, top corner
2nd GA, Copley probably should have had that one, tweeners
3rd GA, All alone in the slot, right shoulder
4th GA, Break away, all alone in the slot, top corner
5th GA, Same position as the first shot, 7 hole
6th GA, Pinball'ed in,

Maybe Kings should play some defense?

This game was just fugly! That streak of only giving up 2 goals against per game ended in a bad way. I still like Copley because he played solid enough overall to get the Kings 23 wins since his call-up from the Reign. Quite remarkable for a goalie who was 3rd on their depth chart and an outsider signed in free agency this past season. The reality is he's not a goalie that can give you consistent save %'s above .905. This was an awful game for him despite the team D being awful tonight. Going forward Korpisalo should absolutely be the #1 and also be the playoff starter. The only advantage Copley really has over Korpisalo, is he's a slightly bigger goalie taking up space and his puck handling helps the Kings D a lot better.

With both goalies in net, PK is still a weakness. It's not so much on the goaltending now with Copley/Korpisalo, but something is wrong with how the PK is taught in taking away passing lanes and shots. There are still too many failed attempts on clearing pucks and some players are making wrong reads of where to position themselves. I would say some players are still getting caught being too stationary. Who is the assistant coach in charge of the PK?

Please don't rehash Jim Fox's weak word of tweeners. It's called the 5-hole and been called that way forever! Giving up 7-hole(when a shot leaks through the blocker/rib cage area) is not good either. Even though team D was awful tonight, Copley was not as sharp as we have seen him on some of his best nights. He's a big goalie, but tonight he looked a bit small, hesitant(some of the goals he looked like a deer frozen from headlights) and needed to be better on some of his angles(just a matter of challenging more). Hofer wasn't good either for the Blues. Had Binnington played this whole game, the Kings might have lost something like 5-3(after Binnington came in, the Kings were outscored 5-2).

I'm not disagreeing but swap Quick for Copley and he's getting raked over the coals for the same goals.

Sorry had to chime in on this to clarify some assertions. Before Gavrikov was acquired, the D group was a bit of a mess. To make things worse, neither Cal/Quick could goaltend with this system and roster. They were terribly erratic. Copley was called up and he brought a calm and collective element of goaltending that neither Cal/Quick were displaying. It was a breath of fresh air. Copley plays a much simpler butterfly style than other goalies. He tries to utilize his big size and get square to shots, playing a more upright butterfly. His mobility can be a weakness in certain situations and tonight there was too many of those type of situations.

Regarding goalie stats, Wins and GAA are more a result of the teams offense and defense. Save % is the more important stat for goalies. This has been a weakness of Copley throughout his career so far. Any goalie going into the playoffs with a .905 SV% or less, will be a disadvantage. This is where Korpisalo has a big advantage over Copley. He was putting up a .910+ SV% on the worst team in the NHL and now he's putting up a .930ish with the Kings. Korpi is the go to guy and has some good playoff numbers to back it up. I still like Copley as a platoon/backup role, but if you start him in the playoffs you're giving the Oilers a big advantage. The Oilers have the #1 offense and PP. Korpi's quicker lateral movement(side-2-side) might be better suited against the Oilers, as he can adapt to breakdowns a lot better than Copley.

For those who think my goalie analysis is mumbo jumbo, Korpisalo is a better goalie than Copley.
