Pretty telling how good AZ is without Chychrun in their lineup, not having to forcefeed him all the offensive minutes frees other dudes up to be good.

Valimaki has replaced him without skipping a beat AND he doesn't suck ass at defense.

This guy is not the difference maker his trade value ask says he is.

I'm OK with this lineup for the rest of this year but next year we better have something like this.

That is an interesting take.
Someone could counter by saying Chychrun's best play by far will come with his new team since he has been basically riding the Titanic every season he has been in the league. There could/should be another level there that can only be revealed by playing with other excellent players.
I would have liked to grab Valimaki for a 7th before he was waived. Same with Connor Ingram. Arizona grabs anyone with a prayer so you have to beat them to it with a 7th rounder.

He's played with some good players, his numbers absolutely benefitted from playing with Goligoski. Hjalmarsson and OEL were the top pairing, but he slotted in with them occasionally. Those are all either cup winners or all-stars. He absolutely was not rolled out there with scrubs, he was just a #3 or #4.

The main reason Chychrun's numbers fell off a cliff last year was that Goligoski went to Minny. He also had to carry a lot of the load, which also contributed.

He's an absolutely fabulous complimentary player, but he cannot play top competition effectively and he needs someone somewhat decent next to him. He's not going to carry a line and he's not going to put up the numbers he does right now unless he plays weaker competition and sees a lot of PP time. And all that is totally fine, it's his sweet spot. And that's also nowhere near worth the ask that's been floating around.

They said the same thing about Erik Karlsson and Chychrun wishes he was even a shadow of that.

@Fishhead beat me to the rest. Every time he's had to 'play up' in the lineup he gets obliterated. We'd be trading for a souped-up Durzi, but AZ wants everyone to trade for a franchise #1.

Kaliyev on the top line! Genius!
Been trying to figure out what the roster looks like next year. Never crossed my mind that Todd might try this! I'm on trade Iafallo & get an old, grizzled vet C you can resign for 1M. This would be a much better solution, if Todd would do it.
