No #1 center.
No #1 defenseman.
No #1 goaltender.
...

$31 million of sentimentality (and Calvin) gets you mediocrity.
You aren't thinking big picture of remembering the recent past. The Kings have (hopefully now had) a horrible reputation around the league for the way they treated their players. This is exactly how and why the Kings lost out on Chara back in the day.
The contract was just about inked with the Kings and both Borque and Neeley called Chara about how bad the Kings org was and boom he is in Boston.
Remember Prongers comments about how the Kings couldn't afford him?
This needed to end with the Kings. Just watch Vegas' pump and dump strategy us going to hurt them. Players are going to not sign as their 1st,2nd, or 3rd choice as UFAs. They are going to get Athanasiou and Ben Hutton level players. They are going to be everyone's second to last choice behind Arizona.

I think the Dodgers are an org-an-eye-zation that we can look at for how it should reasonable treat it's players.
They are known around the league as an organization that has respect for it's players. Look at the Dodgers. Kershaw will have a home for life on that eam, but he has now been passed up as the #1 starter. They also just non-tendered an unproductive Bellinger. (And yes,DL's BIGGEST mistake was not buying out Richards after 2014) But... are we even in that position... No.

We don't have anyone to take Kopitar's place yet and slide him down the depth chart. If Kopitar gets hurt we really don't have anyone to fill that role. Kupari, Byfield, and Lizotte definitely aren't ready.

One also needs to remember where the Kings are in this rebuild. It is a team in transition from trying to win a third cup, to a full blown rebuild, to a trying to be a fixture as a playoff team, while getting younger. This isn't a championship team. That is years off.
This version of the Kings made the playoffs faster than Lombardi's so expectations may be a little view askewed, Remember kids, this team drafted 2nd overall in 2020. There is a ways to go.

And yes, Petersen sucks. The goaltending absolutely needs to be addressed.

As much as last night sucked, it was one game and hopefully a learning experience.

If this organization has any common sense, Todd is shown the door immediately. How many multi goal leads can you choke? How many times can you have a team completely no show at minimum half a game? How often can you just not have any sense of D-zone coverage?

This is a Blake problem. The roster isn't constructed to settle play down. No size along the wall or in front of their net, no way of being able to change the tempo of the game to a more controlled pace when necessary.

There are two too many offensive wingers here and not enough specialists who can low-event their way to hold on to a lead. That isn't on the coach, that is this bullshit, non-committal, non-meritocracy lineup from a medioce GM.

Worst part about Cal is his loser persona is spreading to Quick. It’s like asking Superman to sit next to 200 lbs of kryptonite.

Spreading?

Quick hasn't been a quality goaltender since 2016. He has been getting by on reputation and the ability to occasionally pull a rabbit out of a hat that he created by being out of position to begin with.

Last night was exactly the sort of play from Cal that Quick has been offering for years, just without the good will in his pocket. Diving saves after being over-committed, seeing eye shots finding their way in through 6 legs, bad anglers fighting their way in - those have been hallmarks of Quick since Obama was in office.

Constantly barking up the same tree. No other GM or team does it differently wirh those 3. Not with the Cup success. Top level Cup winners get rewarded by the team they won with, unless they choose to leave.

I can’t disagree about much there. I’ll admit that Jon Quick is a sentimental favorite of mine.

I guess the reason I look past his too often shaky play is the intangibles. In my feelings, he’s been the only guy on the team who carries himself like a born winner since 2014. He’s the last of the group of warriors since the hey day of Richards, Mitchell, Williams, Regehyr, and Greene.

Weak sauce.

Quick was the main reason the Kings made the playoffs last season and took Edmonton to 7.
And yes, that was last year and he is showing his age this year. But that doesn't change that your comment was such a reach that you were using one of these while typing

The worse thing now is a knee jerk reaction and trade away picks and prospects. Let TMac, Quick , Kopitar contracts fade and hopefully bring in proven management. The goal now is to create a new core, add younger players and use the cap space in a few years to add the pieces.

We are not winning with Kopitar, Doughty, Quick\Cal that is a given.

DS inflicted a lot more damage before he was booted.

It's real simple guys, until TM leads this team OUT of a playoff berth in a year that they are expected to be there, he ain't getting fired. Save your energy...cause you ain't even close.
That's exactly what's happening this year. We're expected not only make the playoffs but win a series, and we're going to miss the playoffs. If by game 50 it has become absolutely clear then we're on the outside looking in, why wait?

Time will tell. But this year isn't tending for Todd.

Todd has one more year on his deal at $5M after this season. Coming out of the reduced revenue years, I am unsure AEG will give Blake the green light to let a coach go while they're still under contract.

That being said, if their #1 goal is the playoffs (and playoff revenue which likely exceeds $5M even if its only 1 round) I could see them firing a coach to try and kickstart to the team.

How many times must you be proven wrong before you get it?

I have provided you with lengthy lists of actual Hall of Famers that have left their long time organizations after Cup wins on multiple occasions over the years, yet here you are again with the same dumb post to excuse the mistakes of this organization.

Quick-colored glasses, that's what you are wearing there. This post proves my point.

Dude has been no better than "adequate" over the past 6 seasons, and the only reason they haven't looked to replace him with better quality goaltending is the ridiculously long contract he received back when he was a quality goalie and the sentimentality the fans have attached to him that absolutely exceeds what he has given to the team since.

I love the guy, but when your goalie is routinely in the bottom third of the league you need to make a change. And that requires an honest appraisal not based on long since past glories. Quick isn't good enough to make a difference anymore, and his hero worship has out-kicked his net coverage.

Yea its a glaring issue. Hes not a 1c anymore. He played great vs Edmonton but it took a lot out of him and it was a defensive performance while his offense was dry that game.
Retain half if you have to. He would be so good as a 2c in Colorado.
Him and Doughty being traded has to be considered. Maybe Toronto wants Doughty with their defense corp hurt.
The series vs Edmonton showed everyone that Kopitar was done. He played great the first game but that was all he had in him. After game one he completely fell apart. He’s old. The real question is if Kopitar is demanding the icetime or he’s just putting his head down and taking assignments. If it’s the former he needs to go, if it’s the latter Todd got to go

You haven't done that at all. Whatever list you may have is likely exceptions, not the norm. It's even what your favorite Hawks team did. Now time has finally run out on the stupid 3rd contracts for Cup winners, so now they're burning everything to the ground. Not 3 or 4 years ago.

As I've said, a player can choose to leave, but if he wants to stay, the team will very likely keep him. Even without Cup wins that's likely.

Then you have your team exceptions like the Florida Marlins, who got rid of everyone after their championships. Because they're incredibly cheap, and chose not to try and sustain contender status. But again, that's an exception. Usually, teams aren't quite that cheap.

You keep believing what you want to believe though. Nobody keeps their players. As soon as anyone gets old, everyone walks away. Everyone works like Billy Beane and the A's, who won jack shit.

I didnt mean he was good against Edmonton in the playoffs. I meant that game vs Edmonton the game like last week.
I thought he was bad after game 1 of the playoffs also.

Yeah, imagine being happy we're at nhl .500.

If you go by pts percentage instead of raw points which we have more of due to more GP, we're 4th in the Pacific, 5th in the Central, 5th in the Atlantic, 6th in the Met. 17th in the league overall.

The season is teetering right this moment but quite a few heads in sand about it. Guys, we are almost a third of the way thru the season, not game 10, and it looks like Game 1, and we're a cap team firmly headed for the black hole.

I hope beyond hope that this is 2012, but it feels more like 2015. Really, REALLY hope the captains just go down with the ship and don't make any Dave Taylor panic moves to save themselves.

And Cal...that's it for me. Maybe he pulls it together maybe he doesn't but the longer these guys wait to find out the bigger the hole we are in.

They call it the yips in MLB. Cal is a guy who has demonstrated skill and, importantly to this discussion, composure and mental fortitude at every level of play until now, enough so that he was a Captain at Notre Dame. Whether it's the hockey gods smiting him for the Buffalo rejection or just his own mind ripping him apart, I haven't seen a Kings goalie play themselves out so hard since Cloutier.

The issue I see is that nobody's taking that #1 spot from Kopitar with their play.

TMac is signed for one more year after this one.

I suspect the Kings will get it together and make the playoffs, but the spotty goaltending will keep them spinning their wheels.

In order to win consistently, your team needs cohesion; from coaching, to style, to on-ice personnel. I feel like that's largely what this team is lacking.

No one has been given a shot. The icetime disparity shows that.

Cal is done as a King. There’s no redemption arc for this guy. He’s cooked. The way he’s crashed and burn there’s no recovering from that and he doesn’t deserve an opportunity to do so any more. He’s had more than enough rope to hang himself ten times over.
