Been meaning to ask this question...so once he's played more than 9 games and he's unable to be sent down to juniors, can they then send him to the AHL?
No

after 9 games he has to stick with the club and begins his ELC. He cant be sent to Ontario due to the age limit being 20 or older. This was all set up so Junior hockey doesnt get destroyed and makes teams want to keep their players in Juniors longer.
not ENTIRELY correct

After he plays in his 10th game the first year of his ELC is officially counted

HOWEVER

They have the option of loaning him back to his OHL team after that. It just means the first year of his contract is considered done moving him one year closer to RFA status, eligibility, UFA statues etc etc etc

The bit about the AHL is true and it's dumb

I dunno about trying to get him to fail, Clarke has looked better on his left than any of our other guys. Walker probably 2nd best and Durzi a mess on his off side. Might be why they play him there occasionally.

Also, for the PP the Kings only play 1 D, and Doughty is going to be out there. If Durzi isn't out there for PP2 it takes away the main purpose to even have him in the lineup, so I don't expect him to see much time there right now.

They shouldn't be sending him down anyways, they just need to make room. Chicago is in the market for a D after their decent start I'm sure with Jones injured. Anaheim will just sign whoever to fill in for Drysdale this year. Not sure how long Zub is out but Ottawa might be looking for help on the back end as well.

It’s the same narrative for the forwards as well - Kings put them in positions to fail and so they do and ruin their development. Just a bunch of BS.

I think they should play Clarke 9 games and send him back to junior. He’s clearly overmatched right or left side D. He may not learn anything new in junior but perhaps he can take the time to get stronger for full time NHL duties next year or <gasp> time in the AHL.

Avs actually play 3 D on the PP - Makar, Toewes, and Girard... I think Adding Durzi on PP w DD might not be a bad idea

Walker needs to play for him to have any trade value. Something has to give soon if we keep Clarke.

I think Clarke is here to stay as the #7D. He’s easily proven that he’s better than Moverare. If Walker is playing over him, it’s because the Kings won last game. Todd gets to keep a safety blanket while feeling shook. And Blake gets to fluff his favorite type of player, the depressed, overpaid asset.

The stars align and Walker attracts suitors in a trade, Kings add a LHD and Clarke puts pressure on Durzi to earn his $1.7M on a nightly basis.

He can be sent back down at any time, 8, 10, 50 games. The 9 games only ,attest with regards to the contract and the first year of the ELC officially beginning. Once down he cannot be recalled until the end of his teams OHL season.

No

sorry . I didn’t get this far in the thread. 😉

If Clarke stays up and plays only 40 or 50 games that is still better for his development than going back to juniors. He is growing within the team culture, attending meetings and practices, the weight room and trainers are major league. I believe this is much the same rationale that was used with Byfield last year. You have a player who is trapped in the CHL. languishing amongst inferior competition, if he is not on your team.
NHL and CHL need to work out a transfer agreement so NHL clubs can buy out a CHL player's D+2 season and place them in the AHL. There are always several guys stuck in the CHL in their D+2 when the AHL is the best level for their development. The NHL club should have the option of buying out the players junior contract for a nice 100-150K payment to the junior club when that player shows that the AHL is appropriate. European players can go straight into the AHL at 18, see Brad Lambert and Jiri Kulich. Canadian players are being hampered in this regard and they shouldnt be when there is a way for everyone to win.

Clarke is clearly physically under developed.

I hate the idea of him going full time through the grind of an 80 game NHL schedule.

He's not special. He shouldn't be thrown to the wolves in the NHL.

You have to be patient with prospects.

I'm still not convinced that burning a year of a player's ELC is inherently a bad thing. Depending on the player's development, you could potentially end up locking them up for a lower cap hit on their 2nd deal by having to sign it a year earlier.

The only reasons I would find it problematic is if you were particularly tight against the cap only for the season the ELC were to expire, but not in the years following the extension or if the player were to massively regress immediately after signing the extension.

Clarke was playing against men two years ago, then went back to juniors and dominated. There is nothing left for him there, and there has been nothing outside of a few expected growing pains in his NHL games that says he shouldn't be in the NHL. Being a smaller defenseman in the NHL isn't the major drawback that it used to be, it's not 1985 it's 2022

The problem is he needs to be utilized properly. He's a 19 year old kid adapting to the NHL game, don't f'n put him on his off hand in his first handful of games. You are supposed to be nurturing and developing his game, not making it more difficult for him and putting him in an uncomfortable/unnatural position. He's an offensive weapon with great vision, utilize him on the PP

good points, I also think that you just make the cap work, there is always a way so I don't think it should be SUCH a big factor in if it's worth it to burn a year of a player's ELC.

Ya I knew that, didnt phrase my response that well...its a no brainer not to start the ELC if you dont plan on using him all year.

Are there any actual examples of teams regretting burning a player's 1st year of an ELC? (not talking about development issues due to rushing a prospect soley the cap implications of the contract)

To the people here talking about Clarke and his lack of strength and need for skating improvement, do you think his junior team is going to help him develop those things for the rest of this season? You're kidding yourself if you think they are going to throw him in the weight room and get him a skating coach to help him. What do they care about his NHL prospects? They want more fans in the seats and victories in the win-loss column.

Brandt has nothing to gain from another season of Major Junior, he just thinks the game too well for it to be a challenge anymore.

He needs to struggle (and occasionally fail) against men in the Pro’s for him to benefit. Clubbing baby seals back in Juniors is a waste of his ability.

I'm fine with Clarke playing "only" 40 game sin the NHL over another season of junior.

Sure sit him every other game, feed him full cows, put him in the weight room. But he's already been playing pro men, going back down to obliterate a bunch of kids doesn't teach him jack shit.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I'm not sold he's NHL ready from a strength perspective.

That opinion itself is totally popular and fine.

What to do about it isn't.

Clarke has no business going back to the OHL
Agree. I'm more concerned about guys taking runs at him down there than up here.We saw it in the preseasom from that punk on Vegas's rookie squad. Guys just like him with no hope at the nhl level would love to go after guys like Clarke. There's nothing to learn down there. Let him rotate in and out the rest of the year.

I wonder if we should send Clarke back to juniors? He looks like he has the offensive prowess to stay in the NHL, but he's also not a great skater nor does he look especially strong, which is to be expected for a 19 year old.
Kings have Shitload of RDmen behind Doughty. Roy and Walker will be UFA's a 2024 so I expect they will be peddled first. Clarke is the future maybe after Doughty is traded away or retires. Grans has great size something a lot of teams covet and he's 20. Spence has great wheels, can move the puck well and can QB the 2nd unit. Durzi is an energy guy with flaws but has skills too. At times he does get exposed defensively though. Faber well LA crapped the bed with this one but since you have to give to get I'm OK,not thrilled but OK especially when Fiala is on. As for sending Clarke back to Barrie Colts of the OHL,I'd say yes just so LA doesn't burn that first year and Blake figures out what the hell to do all those RD-men. And I agree he doesn't seem strong enough at times and isn't a PCoffey type skater that's for sure
