So who is the odd man out next year in the forward group? Arvidsson? Someone has got to go in order to clear up cap space to resign Vilardi, Moore, and Anderson. If our young guys keep up their strong play, they are going to either push out one or two of the vets, or they get traded to fill in holes. I can't picture QB or Vilardi getting traded, and I really hope they don't decide to part with Kaliyev or Kupari. RV may be playing his last season in LA, and perhaps Trevor Moore has made Iafallo expendable.

I would say Arvidson.
His way to play is just not what we should do

Further into the season when remaining daily cap hits allow for this (or now if Calgary makes room):

:kings
Viktor Arvidsson, RW - 2 yrs @ 4.25M (29 yrs)
+?

:flames
Oliver Kylington, LD - 2 yrs @ 2.5M (25 yrs)
+?

It seemed that Kings and Flames fans on the trade board agreed this could be a solid base for both teams' needs. They don't need Kylington as much anymore with Weegar's arrival and likely won't have the cap space to re-sign him. Arvidsson is excellent for us when healthy, but we have reinforcements coming who can mesh alongside Moore-Danault.

Any thoughts? We would likely have to trade or waive someone like Walker to make room in the lineup (or who knows, injuries happen).
It would make sense if Kylington weren't on IR. Hasn't played a game this season for "personal reasons".

Arvidsson definitely needs to go -- after all 75 point wingers that can really skate just grow on trees.

He doesn't need to go, but when we start looking ahead at age, salary, and role, he's arguably one of the most 'replaceable' parts. Fantastic player though, and has come about exactly as advertised.

Now where's this 75 point winger you were talking about?

He's averaged 48 points per 82 games over the last three seasons, but fair enough (FWIW he's played 173 out of 246 possible games during that stretch). I'm more worried about Arvidsson staying healthy than I am about his effectiveness when he's actually on the ice.

We have a big need at left defense, and I think the start of this season has shown it. I'll admit I didn't realize Kylington's placement on IR was undefined; I just think he's a guy with potential who might be out of luck staying in Calgary.

Just .74 points per game.

I'm curious, what does your ideal discourse for this board look like? You mean to tell me people complain when they lose? I'm shocked. People are happy when they win? How is this possible? Wtf do you want people to talk about exactly? Would you prefer every thread to just be "good job kings" over and over again? Since the beginning of last season many of us have advocated for a team setup exactly like what's been happening the past two games and are happy about it
Well there is a grey area between being disappointed and the extremes we sometimes read here after every loss. Yes I know thats the case with any fanbase.

Heck, sometimes I miss the games because it is 4.00 A.M. here and I read the GDT’s, sorry but that’s downright BIPOLAR shocking. I get annoyed by it too.

I guess me, Axl and whoever are a little more down to earth than most. I do not like the extreme enthusiasm and neither do I like the extreme negativity. I am right in the middle.

I like this post.

Well then Arvidsson is even more redundant since we have 118 point winger Vilardi and 109 point winger Fiala correct?
Exactly. We are looking ahead here because what else can we do. The point is that RV will be 30 at the conclusion of his current contract. And I'm of the thought process that hell no should you never extend anyone 30 years old and over unless they are #1 cheap and #2 a core member of the team. For as much as I like him I do not consider him to be core on top of all of the other concerns with injury and durability. It's not like the kings don't have a bunch of young forwards looking for roster spots and doing well in the AHL. Who by the way are going to be cheap and cost controlled.

Why? I don't see how he's an example at all, in fact I'd argue the opposite. Again, I'm not talking about regretting rushing a prospect into the NHL, I'm asking for examples of a team regretting burning a year of an ELC solely because of the cap consequences. In Byfield's case, he has only this year and next year to drive up the cap hit of his second contract, where as had his ELC slid last year he'd have a 3rd year to develop and break out before we need to resign him. His production will be lower in a contract year because that contract year comes earlier in his development.

Byfield's underwhelming production in the first year of his ELC cost him money on his second contract, meaning cap wise, we likely benefited from burning the year. (Again, solely talking about the cap consequences of burning an ELC year and not about potential negatives of rushing the development of a player)
Clarke.

This right here.....disappointed we lost...sure.......ready to punt kick everyone you thought was responsible, idiotic....

You can be sad they lost, happy they won, without being irrational looney tunes on a day to day basis.....

Exactly. The question becomes is the team better with Arvidsson (or whomever) or by trading him along with (for argument sake) Durzi or a prospect for a grittier LHD? I’d also say that there’s a case for Moore being moved in this context (for LHD) given his contract situation but you’d probably add less in any deal. We aren’t getting the required LHD for spare changes.

At this point whomever goes in any trades, for a G or LHD, is going to sting a little. We need to include a roster player or two in any deals and we have nobody that is lacking any value. Even Walker has value when fit but he’s still fairly early in his recovery. It could easily be 12 months before he’s at his true level. I’d move him though, even as a throw in, to clear cap and roster space.

The development paths for Kupari, Vilardi, and Grundstrom obviously worked for them, even though I think most of the credit should go to the players themselves.
You can’t have it both ways by saying good things are down to the players and bad things are down to the coaching/development. It’s a symbiotic relationship anyway, the two parties succeed or fail together. Reading between the lines something clicked for Vilardi towards the end of last season. Maybe hefinally got the message, maybe they finally communicated it better or maybe most likely they figured it out together.

The speed by which he’s been put up the lineup to play with Kopi supports the realistic view that it’s the latter as any other answer would not include the trust he’s being given.

Wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to let Byfield go back to the AHL and dominate…

Byfield already has 43 career games played in the AHL with a statline of 12-14-26.

Not sure if the AHL is better for him at this point than the NHL. He seems to have found mediocrity at every level post-juniors.
