For sure, but he can easily keep going at virtually the same level he has been at for most of his career. This isn't like (younger) Toews' body giving out or even Backstrom feeling "fine" after his surgery but coming back to play at a 3rd line level, Multiple teams out there would easily value Bergeron as an 8+ million dollar player if he was available as a UFA for next season
Friedman reported after the game he’s been playing with a herniated disc. So maybe that’s been bothering him. Who knows. He might want to retire before any significant injury that would affect post-NHL life

yeah thats what I mean. Bergeron has a better claim to playing in the league this year than 80% of players that are gonna be there, him retiring is deciding to walk away a la Matt Niskanen
The thing about Bergeron is I don't think his heart will be in it for another aeason. Nothing to do with whether he's physically up for it or not. He and Krejci seemed to be talked into it by Bruins management etc to take one last run at a Cup. And after that record breaking regular season, this is a hell of a way to lose. Even the best of players would see this as too much to come back from (imho).

But I guess we'll see.

The way they structured their contracts also indicated that this was a "one last hurrah" situation. The 4.5M in bonus overages that they're carrying into next season is gonna force them to gut their lineup to be cap compliant, and they've really got no more future left to mortgage with a barren prospect pool and a bunch of picks gone. Even if Bergeron comes back on a league-min deal they won't be able to ice a comparable lineup.

I feel bad for the Bruins. As Caps we all know what its like to win the Presidents Trophy, be heavy favorites going into the tournament, and then get upset by some low life punk in the first round (I'm looking at you Halak and Montreal).
LOL low life punk? They won the presidents last season do you even watch hockey?

Upsets are fun but the NHL can’t be happy with how this first round is turning out in terms of next round matchups. If the Rangers go down tonight, yikes for ratings. Absolutely nobody outside of local fans and diehard hockey fans will care about the Hurricanes/Devils or Kraken/Stars. The Oilers and Golden Knights could be an awesome series but the East coast will be mostly in bed by puck drop for every game. And they got the worst possible matchup out of the combination of Toronto, Boston, Tampa, and Florida. Toronto/Boston, Tampa/Boston, or Tampa/Florida would have been great storylines but Toronto/Florida? Oof. Same with the Rangers, Islanders, Hurricanes, and Devils. Rangers/Isles could have been great but Devils/Hurricanes? Should be fun hockey for the very small group of fans that will actually watch it.

NHL does not sell story lines. We can talk about that and the TV deal. I think upsets are good for the game and get fans more interested. Leaf fans have to be on a high now.

So you don’t think there will be a difference in the number of people who watch Toronto/Florida instead of Toronto/Boston? I’ll wager that’s not a correct assumption.

Upsets are great but they’re not great for ratings. Look no further than the NCAA tournament. Everyone loves the upsets until the Elite 8 features a 6 vs 15 seed game that nobody watches. People want to watch Arizona vs Baylor, not Creighton vs Princeton.

Big markets being good and going deep in postseason play is good for business. And I’m bummed we don’t get to see a Boston/Toronto series. Could have been epic.

Lets be real its the NHL, they get the same ratings no matter who plays. Its all of us watching every game and the other fair weather fans come and go.
