The Bisons have yet to post a 2022-23 roster page and did not pass out game sheets at tonight‛s game. But I made note of the names and numbers, and here‛s the line-up.

MANITOBA - new players in bold
Goal
34 Hawryluk (35 Murphy)

Defence
5 Schioler - 16 Hartje
27 Gottfried - 2 Stewart
8 Toth - 6 Dyck
4 Malchuk

Forwards
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11Ostir
20 Apetagon - 19 Arpin - 21 Basarab
26 McCorrister - 28 Behun - 29 King

Scratches - uncertain as to exactly which players are on the roster
G: 1 Link - 30 Bennett - Harkness
D: 25 Sambrook - Patrick
F: 14 Keane - 15 Dalke - 24 Pierce

LAKEHEAD
Goal
30 Aiken (31 Wright)

Defence
18 Jette - 28 Auger
4 Wojciechowski - 8 Van Den Hurk
2 Borbely - 22 Williams
20 Fortin

Forwards
15 Ho - 27 Mack - 16 Blackwell
19 Stiles - 9 Smith - 25 Massie
11 Fox - 12 Dempster - 10 Badalamenti
14 Van Unen - 13 Fox - 29 Edwards

Scratches
1 Cicigoi
5 Turpin - 23 Massie - 3 Whitaker
17 Gerrie - 26 Gervais - 21 Pouliot - 24 Miles

Lakehead‛s players did not have names on their shirts, unless they pulled a Harold Ballard move and put white letters on a white background.

This was a case of ugly goaltending for the new recruit from the NCAA. The shots on goal clock was not necessarily accurate. I think they just counted the saves. In any event, the shot clock said 17-12 in favour of the Bisons. Hawryluk‛s save percentage is taking a pounding! I am not sure who all is in camp but I did not see anybody being an overwhelming favourite to be #1.

Here‛s the very unofficial summary:

1st period
LU 1-0 #25 Massie
LU 2-0 #28 Auger
UM 2-1 #10 Skoleski (PP)
Penalties: UM #9, LU #13, LU #11

2nd period
LU 3-1 #27 Mack
LU 4-1 #28 Auger
Penalties: UM #22, LU #19, LU #10, UM #18

3rd period
LU 5-1 #13 Fox (SH)
LU 6-1 #27 Mack (SH)
UM 6-2 #21 Basarab
Penalties: LU #28, LU #27, LU #9, UM #26, LU #32

This was an exceptionally sloppy game. Bad passes and not a lot of quality play-making. Lakehead took their penalties in pairs, providing 5-on-3 powerplays in the process. The first time, the Bisons scored. But the second, Lakehead scored twice, once on a blueline breakaway on a bad pass and the second when a player exited the box and had an instant breakaway. Prior to the 3rd period shorthanded goals, the Bisons had immense pressure every shift and were really carrying the play. The lack of offensive finish hurt them.

The old ACAC rivalry was back for a one-night revival. And the Mythical Mutants once again walked away with the honours. It was nice for Mac to finally hit the win column, now standing at 1-4-1.

Nice to see that LeagueStat was activated by the Evil Monkeys. The last goal was an empty-netter, so this was a close one. Matt Fonteyn had two goals for the Monkeys. Nick Schneider got the win with 30 saves on 33 shots. Kaeden Lane had the loss with 26 saves on 30 shots. That‛s not an awful stat, but certainly not all-star numbers. UBC is now 2-2-1 (1-2-1 against USports) and the Monkeys are 6-1-0.

The U of W had a women's team that was going to play there but the program folded before a CW women's league got going.

Thank you, I had some vague recollection of hearing something Wesmen and hockey related at the downtown arena but I couldn't remember how it shook out. Too bad.

Also, to your game rundown and your comment about no lineups, I noticed at the Bison football home opener that they didn't have lineup sheets which is too bad. Just lots of QR codes directing you to the Bisons website. But it's not the same, I hope this isn't a permanent decision.

This game was slated to start at 5:00 CDT on Regina‛s page and at 6:00 EDT on Lakehead‛s. So I arrived at 5 to 5 and it was 1-1 early in the 2nd period. By the time I got myself a drink from the machine, Regina made it 2-1 and I did not see the number of the scorer. Here‛s what happened from that point onward.

Overtime
LU 6-5 #8 Van Den Hurk (PP)

Penalties were not shown on the scoreboard for this one. The shot clock gave Regina the edge, 18-17. So not a lot of stops. And there is no guarantee as to accuracy of my summary.

The winning goal was set up by a penalty in 3-on-3 overtime, in the neutral zone on Lakehead‛s trailing player. Not a wise penalty at that stage of the game. Being down 5-3 late in the 3rd, Regina rallied to tie the game and a win seemed inevitable, until the PP happened.

The schedule says that the finale between the Banjo-Cats and Bisons goes Sunday at 2:00 at The Rink. Hopefully that‛s accurate. Maybe I‛ll get there early and bring myself a sub.

This tight win over the Mythical Mutants gives the T-irds a split of their weekend trip to Edmontown. MacEwan held a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period before UBC rallied for the win.

Quick summary:
Mac: Salame, (8:52 1st PP), Aston, (3:51 2nd)
UBC: Kindree, (16:09 2nd), Mutala, (2:39 2nd PP), Lambos, (17:10 3rd)
Goalies-UBC, Schweibus (20 shots-18 saves). Mac, Abel (33 shots-30 saves).

UBC‛s shaky pre-season finishes at 3-2-1, their only wins over Simon Fraser (BCIHL), Holy Trinity (2nd season out of BCIHL), and now MacEwan (2nd season out of ACAC). MacEwan finishes at 1-5-1.

The Evil Monkeys built a 3-0 lead before the Bluegars rallied. The MRU Twitter link has the best information. After two periods, Alberta held a 3-1 lead but MRU held a 20-16 edge in shots and one would have to think that the gap widened in that 3rd period comeback. Spencer Moe notched the winner. I don‛t remember Alberta being outshot very often in the past, even when they lost. The pre-season ends with the Monkeys at a very good 6-1-1 and the Bluegars at 4-2-0. These two face each other in a home-and-home series of significance.

They had the PA going, the penalties were shown, and the shot clock seemed to be accurate. There was a lot more of a regular season feel to the game than for the Friday and Saturday games. Here‛s the line-ups:

MANITOBA
Goal
1 Harkness - 35 Murphy

Defence
5 Schioler - 16 Hartje
27 Gottfried - 2 Stewart
8 Toth - 6 Dyck
12 Patrick

Forwards
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
26 McCorrister - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
18 Hooker - 19 Arpin - 21 Basarab
20 Apetagon - 28 Behun - 13 Sutter

Scratches
G: 34 Hawryluk
D: 4 Malchuk
F: 14 Keane - 29 King
There may be additional players on the roster.

The seven defencemen rotated fairly much throughout.

REGINA
Goal
30 Evanoff (35 Mager)

Defence
27 Riddle - 28 Pouteau
7 Heidt - 10 Eskra
5 Sass - 2 King-Cunningham

Forwards
21 Adams - 24 Krane - 29 Doucet
8 Davis - 14 Culling - 20 Asham-Moroz
18 Shindle - 16 Schmidt - 17 Barnstable
4 Riemer - 12 Houk

Scratches
G: 1 Young
D: 3 McCabe
F: 9 Fletcher - 11 Mikoski - 19 Platt - 23 Pearce

For Regina, the three centres rotated amongst the four sets of wingers.

SUMMARY

1st period
UR 1-0 #20 Asham-Moroz
UR 2-0 #21 Adams
UR 3-0 #7 Heidt

2nd period
UM 3-1 #18 Hooker

3rd period
UR 4-1 #21 Adams
UM 4-2 #10 Skoleski

Shots on goal:
UR: 14 - 5 - 13 = 32
UM: 4 - 12 - 8 = 24

Harkness got the start in goal, played just the 1st period and allowed three goals. Murphy played the last two periods, and gave up one goal. Evanoff went the distance for the Banjo-Cats.

Harkness was not terrible, but did not play as well as Murphy. The first shot he faced went through the 5-hole. The second goal came after Toth (rookie defenceman) turned over the puck around his own blueline. He is good at carrying the puck so hopefully this won‛t damage his confidence. The third goal came when the 4th line was confused about their defensive roles and a high slot shot found its way through the maize. The only goal on Murphy was a 3-on-2 break by Regina against the 4th line.

Hooker‛s goal was a shot in the slot and Skoleski‛s came just after a PP finished and Regina was still scrambling.

The CW regular season starts next weekend, but the Bisons have the bye. They will travel to the Excited States to play North Dakota on Oct 1st and Bemidji State on Oct 2nd.

How weak of an NCAA team do you have to be to lose to a BCIHL squad? Yeah, yeah, exhibition and all, but you can't score once, even with a 5-minute power play?
It is their first year back after the school dropped the program.

The 22-man roster seems kind of light. Usually teams have 25 or more. I‛ll be looking for more announcements. One recruit (Joseph) is coming over from Trinity Western.

However, Bedrock U has a much better than average return rate on this year‛s squad. They did lose their top scorer (Elder) but otherwise their losses were spread throughout their line-up.

The Banjo-Mutts had their season preview and roster page update on the same day. Sask is losing their top scorer (Franklin) and other players spread throughout all echelons of the depth chart. Like everybody else, they are going with a smaller roster (from 29 to 25). Unlike most others, they have a more or less normal turnover.

The rest of the CW starts their regular season on Friday night, but the Bisons have a bye. Instead, they will travel to the Excited States for a pair of games. On Saturday, they will visit The Ralph and likely playing the NCAA‛s 4th ranked team before about 10,000 fans. On Sunday, they make a short trip east where they will face Bemidji State, themselves ranked 4th out of eight teams in the CCHA.

Back in the day, Bemidji State and last week‛s opponent Lakehead were conference and NAIA rivals before Lakehead joined GPAC and Bemidji State joined the NCAA. Speaking of which, I have linked a local TB news story about last weekend.

To have any degree of success this weekend, the Herd will need much stronger goaltending than either starter provided last weekend.

The live links may be altered prior to game time. Updated live links are likely to be available from the opponents‛ schedule & results pages.

The CW Coaches‛ Poll was announced at the links. Here‛s the summary of the poll in comparison to the actual pre-season results.

NOTE: Coaches ranked all opponents 1-8. First-place votes worth 8 points, second-place worth 7 points etc.

A year ago, the Mythical Mutants started their debut season in the CW with an impressive sweep on the road in Regina. After that, Mac won just one more game and Regina had a solid season. The Banjo-Cats were a tough opponent for anybody. The CW Coaches‛ Poll has these teams 7th and 8th. FWIW, there is a big gap between #7 and #8.

In my opinion, these teams were the CW‛s top two in the exhibition schedule. Whilst the Evil Monkeys are 1st in the Coaches‛ Poll, the Bluegars moved into 2nd. They played two exhibition games against one another, each claiming a win. This is a home-and-home series. The Bluegars have threatened to break into the CW‛s upper echelon for a while now but have never quite made it. Also, you can‛t pay cash for a ticket at MRU. I loathe this trend.

Holy Trinity is breaking in a new coach and almost half of a new roster. Their prep has been limited with one exhibition game against UBC and two against Simon Fraser of the BCIHL. Meanwhile, the Banjo-Mutts look to have a solid core of returnees and had some good pre-season results. To their credit, TWU really improved by the end of last season. This series could be tough for the Spartans.

UBC has had a lot of turnover, albeit with an enviable recruiting class. Their exhibition results were dubious, with their only wins coming against Holy Trinity, Simon Fraser, and MacEwan. Meanwhile, Bedrock U split six games against Alberta, MRU, and Saskatchewan. The T-irds need to obtain some results to follow up on the success of last season. Although 3rd in the Coaches‛ Poll, I have UBC seeded 7th after the pre-season.

NATIONAL NEWS

So Squirrels‛ coach Gardiner MacDougall will be assisted by Mark Howell from Calgary, Clarke Singer (Western), Patrick Grandmaitre (Ottawa), and Brett Gibson (Queen's). So it will be a nation-wide team of first choice players for the first time.

September 29: MANITOBA BISONS ROSTER

Manitoba-2022-73x73.jpg

The Bisons‛ roster page was updated today and there was one new addition who did not play on the weekend and was not previously announced, and one more announced last year who did play once on the weekend.

ERIC FAWKES - F - Winnipeg Blues (MJHL)

The new name is #23 Eric Fawkes, a 6'3" 194 lbs. forward, who tallied 23 goals and 39 assists for 62 points in 48 games for the Blues in the MJHL. He was also committed to play for RPI in the NCAA but has clearly had a change of heart.

Eric-Fawkes-450x250.jpg

➤ Facebook: Video

ANDRE SUTTER - F - Ramperswil (U20-Top) & EHC Seewen (MSL)

This player was announced last year and played in the pre-season only. He was not on the regular season roster. He is only 5'8" which makes him unique on the squad. He has roots in BC and Switzerland. He last played in Canada in 2017-18 in the Junior B VIJHL. I do not know where the Swiss leagues fit into hockey's scheme of things. In 2020-21 he had 16 points in 10 junior games and no points in 4 senior games. There were no listings for him in 2021-22.

28 Codey Behun (Steinbach MJHL)
29 Michael King (Spokane WHL)
35 Brett Murphy (G - Dryden - SIJHL)

DEPARTURES (10)
1 Jeremy Link (G - South Blues - MJHL)
4 Tyler Anderson (D - St. Cloud State - D - NCAA)
11 Ryan Carlson (F/D - Wisconsin-Superior - NCAA)
12 Keaton Jameson (F - Swan Valley - MJHL)
15 Ben Dalke (F - Virden - MJHL)
19 Nathan Halvorsen (F - Selkirk - MJHL)
24 Duncan Pierce (F - Regina/Brandon - WHL)
25 Garrett Sambrook (D - Swift Current - WHL)
27 Carter Doerksen (D - Nipawin Hawks - SJHL)
30 Zach Bennett (G - West Kelowna - BCHL)

On paper, the recruited players are collectively better than the departures. The only players in their Top 13 scorers to depart are Keaton Jameson (now gone to Utah of the ECHL) and Reece Harsch (who was part of the USports exodus to the AHL and ECHL during the Covid shutdown, and is now with Fife in the EIHL). The big question is goaltending, where last season‛s #3 at the start of the season (Brett Murphy) played the best last weekend.

Sept 30: CW SEASON STARTS WITH BISONS‛ BYE

The Bisons start with a conference bye but instead have a Saturday-Sunday weekend. Before we get to Friday‛s games, there is some additional news.

CW-2017-ManitobaBanner-80x50.jpg

The guys at 49-Sport did a pre-season breakdown of the CW. That story is linked.

Also, UMFM radio and Bison Sports could not make a deal on broadcasting rights, so nothing is expected to happen in that regard this year. A story is linked along with a podcast preview episode.

Finally, UND posted some notes and a 17 page PDF for the Saturday night game.

The guys at 49-Sport made a conjecture-based selection of the USports Universiade team. I suspect a few Evil Monkeys will be selected.

Goal: Reg: Meger (L) (21 shots-16 saves) Evanoff (6 shots-5 saves). Mac: Abel (34 shots-29 saves).

The Banjo-Cats need to lobby the schedule-maker in order to play somebody else to start next season. They started last season going 0-2-0 against the Griffins.

The first period was even, with 2 goals on 14 shots for each side. However, the Mythical Mutants scored 3 goals on 7 shots in less than 9 minutes of the 2nd period to chase Mager from the Regina net. The Kittens were purring in the 3rd, closing the score to 6-5 before an empty-netter sealed the deal. The PPs were clicking, with Regina 3-for-5 and MacEwan 1-for-2.

Also, the Manitoba Moose are now headed to Regina for an exhibition game during Regina‛s bye week. The Moose have played the Bisons six times, holding a 4-2 edge. No games have been played since 2010.

The first half of the game was quite good and was the focus of my attention on CWTV. But once the Evil Monkeys started tossing bananas in every direction, the Bluegars were bamboozled. The defensive focus for the Monkeys was impressive. The held the Bluegars to just 4 shots in each of the 2nd and 3rd periods.

This game had a nicely staggered start time, 30 minutes after the first two games and 30 minutes before the game from British California. So I tuned in when Alberta had things sewn up in their game. Last year, Sask had a great broadcast but this was weak. It sounded like they asked for volunteers from the crowd. The game wasn‛t much to look at, either. The Banjo-Mutts treated Holy Trinity like fire hydrants.

I was able to listen to this on radio. Mitch Dyck opened the scoring in the 1st period, which ended tied 1-1. However, UND scored four times in the 2nd period to salt it away. In the nets, Brett Murphy started and played two periods, making 26 saves. Ross Hawryluk came on the 3rd period and made 11 saves. After the disaster against Lakehead, this is encouraging. The radio guys gave Murphy some credit as well.

After a scoreless first, the Banjo-Cats came out like they were on catnip in the second period. I managed to catch the period after my Saturday shopping and it was all one-way traffic. I switched over to the UBC game in the intermission and missed seeing the Mutants‛ rally to make it 4-3. Three goals in less than 5 minutes put this away for the Kittens. On the night, Regina was 4-for-7 on the PP, whilst Mac was just 1-for-8.

This was a matinee game, which started an hour later than the Mac game. The stagger allowed me to see most of this one. It had a lot of ebb-and-flow, with a few dead spots. In the end, it had tension, two OT PPs, and a shoot-out.

TWU: M. Spafford (03:23 1st) , L. Spadafora (06:07 1st) , D. DuBois (14:44 1st) , K. McMillen (18:40 1st) , J. Borynec (05:45 2nd)

Goal: TWU: LaBelle (56 shots-50 saves), Sask: Kooy (8 shots-4 saves) Hobbs (W) (24 shots-23 saves)

This could have been the upset of the season. Holy Trinity held a 5-1 lead early in the 2nd period, and a 5-2 lead entering the 3rd. The Banjo-Mutts piled on 22 shots in the 3rd period to comeback and force overtime. Jared Dmytriw of Sask gets credit for the season‛s first hat-trick.

Digging a Hole
Canada West Preview:

1. Alberta

The Golden Bears are once again, to no one's surprise, the team to beat in the conference. Top to bottom, they are a well coached, balanced roster with enough top-tier, potentially all-Conference players at every position that it doesn't seem likely to be able to beat them in a playoff series. The 2022 recruiting class isn't quite as strong in recent years at the skater positions, but overall this is not a team with many weaknesses.

Newcomer to Watch: F Jakin Smallwood

Fresh off a deep playoff run with the Winnipeg Ice, Smallwood jumps right into an offense that has plenty of firepower just like his time in the WHL. His ability to make the players around him better gives the Bears an embarrassment of riches and options up front. Expect him to immediately provide some PPG offense and attention for end of the year awards.

Key Returnee: D Dawson Davidson

The talented 4th year defender was one of the most highly regarded recruits in the country, but after an excellent freshman season ran into the injury bug last year. If he's back to full strength, he should once again be in line for a star role and a potential all-Conference spot.

2. UBC

After a few down years, it looks like UBC has found a working formula for consistent success. Given the academic qualities of the program and its location, UBC will always receive attention from interested recruits, but lately their incoming classes have been very good and as a result they now have a very balanced team with an emphasis on speed and skill. The Thunderbirds have proven themselves in the playoffs against many of their fellow competitors which keeps them near the top in what looks to be a conference with 5 teams all having a shot at number 1.

Newcomer to Watch: F Sasha Mutala

The local native is the jewel of the TBirds recruiting class; his speed, scoring abilities and vision will have him play a big role right away on a contending team, making him a frontrunner for Freshman of the Year. He was dropped by the Avs due to his inconsistency at the WHL level, but he will get all the opportunity to continue developing in the college game.

Key Returnee: F Tian Rask

The Saskatchewan native was a pleasant surprise in his first true season, adding some much needed depth scoring and two-way play after bouncing around the Jr. A circuit. They don't need him to be a big time scorer, but Rask provides some grit and energy and is the kind of player every winning team needs in their middle 6.

3. Saskatchewan

Mike Babcock had the Huskies playing a stingy puck possession game, and it looks like that will continue this year based on the roster on hand. A mobile and talented group of D once again play a big role in preventing shots against while transitioning the puck to a top 6 forward group that can keep up with any team in the league. The loss of some key vets will hurt, but this team plays winning hockey and they will once again be tough to run into come the postseason.

Newcomer to Watch: D Colby Jaquet

There will be freshmen on this team that play a bigger role this year than the skilled d-man, but it's always an intriguing pickup when you bring in a defenseman capable of putting up the scoring numbers he has done in the MJHL. He's a small guy but his shiftiness and hands should translate well into the college game, and specifically the Huskies' brand of hockey.

Key Returnee: F Vince Loschiavo

The Winnipeg native is technically in his 2nd year of eligibility, but due to playing a few years in Italy is one of the older members of the team's forward group. He should be expected to push for a starring role and some all-Conference attention now that he has had a year under his belt. This is a stronger forward group than last year and Loschiavo's role will be to create offense on the PP and get the puck to the many shooters he has available around him.

4. Calgary

Always the bridesmaid, the Dinos are consistently contenders year after year before running into a wall in the playoffs. Once again though, this team is built to their identity; (hopefully) strong goaltending, big, solid defensemen, and a deep group of two-way forwards all the way through. If a few guys can find some offensive consistency in head coach Mark Howell's plan, this team could have the horses to make it all the way.

Newcomer to Watch: D Connor Horning

The only true freshman blueliner in a small recruiting class, Horning is the classic Dino defender; at 6'3" and 207 pounds, he's tough to get around and plays a strong two-way game. He should fit in seamlessly in a system that prioritizes quick D ups, simple plays to the forwards and strong positional play over dynamic on-the-spot decision-making.

Key Returnee: F Tyson Upper

As a young freshman (Upper still had junior eligibility last year) the Calgary native had made himself into a valuable member of a forward group short on top tier scoring prowess, despite the talent on the roster. The Dinos will need more guys to step up on the offensive end, and Upper taking the next step would go a long way towards finally breaking through in the playoffs.

5. Mount Royal

In a reversal of their cross-city rivals, the Cougars might have some of the most dynamic offensive talents in all of Canadian university hockey. On the flip side, a thinner recruiting class than usual raises some concerns about overall team depth and the team's goals against have slowly increased over the past few years. Still, not a team you'd look forward to playing in the playoffs; that top 9 forward group looks like it could be Nationals-caliber, as long as the goaltending and defense holds up.

Newcomer to Watch: F Blake Stevenson

The hometown center can play multiple positions up and down the lineup and has proven himself at the WHL and Jr. A levels. Another in a line of strong pickups at the forward position, Stevenson's hockey sense and versatility make him an early candidate for Freshman of the Year if he can avoid injury, and his ability to play a two way game stands out on a depth chart full of offense first players.

Key Returnee: F Spencer Moe

So small but so skilled, Moe's in line for a breakout season as part of what is likely the most dynamic offense in the entire conference. His combination of speed, vision and hands make him a threat the moment he touches the puck and his ability to draw attention will hopefully help free up his linemates for backdoor cuts and open space.

6. Regina

Credit where credit is due, it looks like head coach Todd Johnson has built another team capable of winning a few games, a stark contrast from the pre-COVID era which saw the team win just 7 games across 2 seasons. This may be their best forward group in quite some time; at the very least, they should have the horses to keep up in a strong conference. While they lack a true strength, the team is decently well-rounded overall and should continue to be in the mix as the year goes on.

Newcomer to Watch: G Adam Evanoff

As with most midtier teams at the USports level, goaltending will play a huge factor in this team's playoff hopes. With G Brandon Holtby graduating, Evanoff has the inside track on a starting job. A 4-year WHL player who struggled with consistency despite his talent, Evanoff's upside when he's on his game is intriguing and is likely the separating factor between Regina and some of the teams behind them.

Key Returnee: D Tyler Heidt

The older brother of future NHL draft pick Riley, Tyler is heading into his final year of eligibility after spending 3 years in the NCAA and the past season in Regina. The right-handed defenseman broke out last year after struggling in the more rigid US game and will play a big role again as he chases a long playoff run.

7. Manitoba

With apologies to the OP whose thread I'm basically throwing my input into without any warning, Manitoba is going to be in a 3-way battle for the final playoff spot. Departures of both veteran goalies from last year in Jeremy Link and Liam Hughes lead to plenty of questions in goal. The rest of the roster looks very similar to last season, but the Bisons are hoping that added depth at the D position will help stabilize the net and let the forward group cook on offense.

Newcomer to Watch: G Ross Hawryluk

This might as well include fellow newcomer G Simon Harkness and vet G Brett Murphy, but the single biggest question mark for this squad is in goal. The NCAA transfer spent last season riding the bench and Harkness is a fresh faced freshman. While both have legitimate talent and junior hockey pedigree, the jump from juniors to the college game can be tough for even the best recruits. Manitoba will need one of the trio to step up.

Key Returnee: F Linden McCorrister

While the departure of Keaton Jameson is a blow, McCorrister stands to benefit as one of the returnees poised to take on a bigger offensive role. A scorer first rather than a pure playmaker like Jameson, the 6'1" forward should be in line to crack double digits in goals this season if he manages to build upon his first true university season last year.

8. Grant MacEwan

Don't get fooled by the low ranking, Grant Mac is improved from this time last season, bolstered once again by a recruiting class with collegiate experience. Changes in goal and on the blueline should hopefully shore up that area of the ice, and an experienced and balanced forward group should lead to some interesting matchup decisions and a more consistent attack. At the very least, they should continue to be a hardworking unit that can spoil some teams hoping for an easy night.

Newcomer to Watch: D Daniel Baker

The former Med Hat Tigers captain will step right into the Griffins lineup and contribute to an improved, if inexperienced, defensive group. His length and range have always made him a difficult player to play against and his last WHL season showcased some more offensive upside than he gets credit for.

Key Returnee: F David Kope

The Edmonton native and former Oil King is a big breakout candidate; he's a big body who has a history of producing offense at all levels including the WHL, and suddenly he finds himself with a competitive forward group flanking legitimately talented teammates.

9. Trinity Western

The Spartans will likely remain at the bottom of the standings despite looking improved from last year. A poor attack last season highlighted their lack of high end talent up front, and while they will have some internal improvement the incoming recruits will need to overperform if they hope to build off last year. If they can find some consistency on defense, they should be able to keep games closer and competitive.

Newcomer to Watch: D Jesse Pomeroy

The transfer from Niagara in the NCAA is a stable defensive defender who should step right into the lineup barring a poor training camp. Travis Verveda led this team in scoring as a defenseman, but Pomeroy and the other D will need to step up if they are to improve on their bottom ranked goals against from last year.

Key Returnee: F Jeremy Klessens

The skilled forward will have a clean slate as he gets set for a bigger role in the team after a slow start to his college career. He has been a scorer throughout his junior career, and will need to be again; finding his groove and continuing to improve his all-around game will help with some of the team's matchup issues up front and take off some of the burden currently placed upon other forwards.

ACAC Preview:

1. Red Deer Polytechnic

On paper, RDP is likely the most complete team in the ACAC, with talent across all positions. Enviable scoring options across the roster give head coach Trevor Keeper plenty of room for creativity, and the D group is full of hard nosed defensemen. The Kings were inconsistent throughout last season, culminating in a first round sweep at the hands of lowly Briercrest College in the 1st round, but the improvements along the margins should help with their depth.

Newcomer to Watch: D Parker Gavlas

The Huskies transfer is looking for a fresh start after 2 relatively unproductive years in Saskatchewan. The 6'1" right handed defenseman has the size and skill to be an impact defenseman, and he brings with him WHL pedigree if he can rediscover his game.

Key Returnee: F Jacob Kendall

The reigning Rookie of the Year and First Team All-ACAC center will once again be called upon to be the leader in all facets of the game in their quest to finally make a deep playoff run. Equally good at finishing and creating plays, Kendall is a tough matchup for any team and could be in line for a 30+ point season.

2. Concordia University-Edmonton

The Thunder have stepped up their recruiting game in the past few years and look to have filled the power vacuum left when Grant Mac went to Canada West. This is a very, very solid team from top to bottom, with great goaltending, a balanced group of defensemen and an improved attack bolstered by some big scorers in this year's incoming class. Look for CUE to be a contender again, with an eye towards finishing the job after falling to NAIT in the Finals last season.

Newcomer to Watch: F Edge Lambert

The former Tri-City American is one of the current frontrunners for Rookie of the Year. His complete offensive game makes him an instant threat to be the team's scoring leader and he'll be in line for both a big role in the team's offense as well as excellent support in a strong system.

Key Returnee: D Seth Summers

The big bruising two-way defenseman will be relied upon once again to anchor the Thunder backend. He has the skill and versatility to play on the power play as well as the PK and is one of the toughest players in the league to play against, making him a potential all-Conference player this year.

3. SAIT

The Trojans have one of the largest recruiting classes in Canadian college hockey this year, turning over the entire goaltending position and the majority of their defense group. That being said, their core identity of grinding opponents down remains the same, with a hardworking and deep group of forwards looking to hit first and hit hard every game. Discipline will be a driving factor in the team's fortune, as they were the most penalized team in the league last season.

Newcomer to Watch: G Boston Bilous

With all the turnover on D and in net, SAIT's hope will be that Bilous and fellow rookie G Spencer Welke can come in and immediately provide stability. Having seen the impact of relying on an elite goalie up north in NAIT, Bilous' winning pedigree should hopefully be the anchor to a team with championship aspirations.

Key Returnee: D Chase Felgueiras

The big smooth skating blueliner is one of the few returning vets on defense, and with only 2 other D with college experience projected to be on the roster the Trojans will need him to step up. He's had stretches of excellence followed by stretches of inconsistency, but the talent is there; at one point, Felgueiras was a feature on Central Scouting NHL draft rankings.

4. NAIT

The reigning champs, NAIT has graduated a large number of stars at all positions and looks to be in retooling mode; that being said, you can never underestimate the heart of a champion. The offense remains a strength despite losing a number of big names, but the real test will be on the backend; similar to their rivals in Calgary, key losses, especially in goal, have led to a very young and inexperienced core group for their new head coach.

Newcomer to Watch: F Colin Schmidt

The former Grant Macewan Griffin returns to the ACAC after 2 years in Canada West. The Spruce Grove native struggled to find a role last season at the USports level, but as a freshman in the ACAC scored 13 points in 15 games. Should he rediscover his scoring touch, he gives the Ooks another valuable weapon in their attack.

Key Returnee: G Taryn Kotchorek

Quite frankly, the Ooks have spent the last few years with one of the best goalies in Canada in Jordan Papirny tending the crease. Kotchorek, who has been patiently biding his time, looks to be the imminent starter to begin the season. If he can give the Ooks reliable minutes, they have the talent to remain a big player in an increasingly competitive ACAC conference.

5. University of Alberta-Augustana

The team that almost never was, until a group of local powerbrokers and alumni pitched in to save the team. Coming off an upset win in the playoffs against SAIT last season, the Vikings look to be a tough out once again. They will again need to rely on a bend but don't break defense anchored by good goaltending, but internal development and some new faces should hopefully lead to improvement on their pop gun offense from last season.

Newcomer to Watch: F Conrad Phillips

Augustana had a very small recruiting class this year and have built around a team full of 2nd and 3rd year players, but the Marian University transfer will be relied upon to fill a role in their top 6. An excellent playmaker with quick feet, the Vikings will need him to produce if they are to build on last season's performance.

Key Returnee: F Tanner Manz

The 2nd year forward from Saskatchewan led the team in goals last year, an impressive feat for a freshman. He will need to up his game as the Vikings are no longer a surprise and Manz in particular will be focused on by the opposition, but his prior success in the SJHL suggests that double digits in goals and an increase in assists is well within reason.

6. Briercrest College

The Bible College has long had a reputation for being the hardest working team in the league, but lately they have begun to add some talent to supplement the culture. A change in coaching staff and some new recruits have the Clippers hopeful for a repeat of last season where they unceremoniously swept the RDP Kings in one of the biggest upsets in league history. While they still look like they will be in tough in a stronger than usual ACAC, look for new head coach Sam Klassen to continue emphasizing their hard nosed brand of hockey.

Newcomer to Watch: F Keagon Little

It's not often you see a 19 year old player in the league, let alone someone poised to take a starring role, but Little is primed for an interesting start to his college career. Joining his elder brother at Briercrest, the 6'0" center (as well as fellow freshman Alex Pellerin) will be expected to come in and provide an immediate boost to the offense, which looks more competitive than perhaps ever.

Key Returnee: D Jacob Arsenault

The tough shutdown defender helped anchor the Clippers defense, was a big part of their playoff success, and will need to be again if they hope to repeat. With his multiple years of CHL experience, look for Arsenault to take the reins fully as the team's number 1 matchup option against other team's top lines.

7. Portage College

Portage College almost snuck into the playoffs over Briercrest College; had they managed to win one more game in their last weekend matchup between the two, it might've been Portage celebrating their first playoff series victory. As it is, it looks as if they will be fighting for the last playoff spot again as a weak defense and questionable goaltending will keep them in the underdog spot until proven otherwise.

Newcomer to Watch: F Vincent Levesque

The diminutive playmaker instantly becomes the Voyageurs' top offensive option after leading the Jr. A Granby Inouk in scoring by a mile. A playmaker first, Levesque's dynamic skillset should help improve the team's power play, though it remains to be seen if Portage can surround him with the talent necessary to take advantage of his speed and abilities.

Key Returnee: F Ty Budai

After a solid debut, the returning forward should be expected to take the reins as one of the team's leaders. Already one of their main offensive options after a lengthy Jr. A career, Budai will need to continue developing at both ends of the ice if the Vs hope to break their playoff drought.

Oct 5: BISON PREVIEW CHARTS

Ahead of the Thursday weekend preview (which will hopefully have links to preview stories from all teams), here is a look at the Bisons in chart form.

Bison-Preview-Charts.jpg

The first chart contains the Bison record against each opponent last year, plus the number of games against each opponent scheduled for 2022-23.

In 2021-22 the Covid lockdowns caused the shortening of the season, down to 20 games. This year the CW is back to 28 games. But whereas before this meant an even four games against each opponent, it now means that two opponents must be played only two games in one series. For the Bisons, that means they will face MacEwan and Saskatchewan in just one series.

Looking back, the Bisons did fairly well against the better teams. They split with Alberta, Mount Royal, and Calgary. Against UBC they had a one goal loss and an overtime loss. Even the 1-3-0 against Saskatchewan is not particularly disastrous. The big problem was the 0-4-0 against Regina and 1-1-0 against TWU. It was those results which got them eliminated from the playoffs.

In overall recruiting and roster turn-over, it seems that Manitoba and MacEwan improved and everybody else was weakened, even if ever so slightly in some cases. I suspect that the Covid lockdowns, which caused an unprecedented mid-season exodus across the country, took their toll. Time will tell if this was just a one-off.

The Bison forwards are so-so. They did not have reliable scoring a year ago. They did return 11 of their top 13 scorers, the big loss being Keaton Jameson. I suspect that their replacements for him and the low-end departures (players with 3 or fewer points) will be adequate.

The defence should be a strength. They will be sitting two solid prospects each game. Provided they are coached within a reasonable defensive system, they should do well. They have five WHL grads, veteran Mitch Dyck, and two highly rated MJHL rookies.

The goaltending is a big question-mark. The games I saw against Lakehead and Regina were cringeworthy at times. Brett Murphy, last year‛s #3 at the start of the season and #2 at the end, looked steady. His only game last year was a win over Saskatchewan. I do not want to jump to conclusions on the newcomers, but they will need to prove themselves. At the same time, the same thing can be said in Regina and UBC (where their losses in net are especially pronounced), and to a lesser extent on other teams.

Last year these teams played twice and UBC won both by 4-3, one in overtime. Those games are in the links.

Neither side had an impressive pre-season and have many question-marks, starting in goal. UBC is losing an all-star, and the Bisons have two newcomers and last year‛s 3rd stringer (as detailed in prior posts). The links have a few different stories, one of which announces that Geordie Keane is the captain. Another announces last year‛s Academic All-Canadians, of which there were eight: Tyler Anderson, Brett Davis, Carter Doerksen, Mitch Dyck, Keaton Jameson, Geordie Keane, Jeremy Link, and Garrett Sambrook.

The Bluegars got a wake-up call last week and that could be bad news for Holy Trinity. Was their 5-1 lead on Sask last Saturday a freak result?

Regina has a wide variety of opponents in bye-week exhibition games. On Thursday it‛s Briercrest College of the ACAC and on Friday it‛s the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The Moose training camp just started with early cuts from the Winnipeg Jets and players on try-out deals. This was a late addition to the schedule, likely because as recently as last weekend the Moose never had a roster. The Moose will also face the Bisons for the 7th time on October 11th at the Ice Plex. Former Bison goaltender Liam Hughes has a try-out with the Moose, as does Ben Hawerchuk, son of Dale Hawerchuk.

Before I get to the game news and views, those UBC uniforms are tough to read. They have a chest-high dark blue hoop which sits nicely behind a primarily white logo but which obscures the dark blue numbers. This was worse than Manitoba‛s black numbers on a dark brown jersey, or Regina‛s yellow numbers on a white jersey, in past seasons.

Here‛s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
34 Hawryluk (35 Murphy)

Defence

8 Toth - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk

Goal: UBC: Lane (15 shots, 11 saves), Man: Hawryluk (34 saves, 29 shots)

I‛ve seen new goaltender Ross Hawryluk play twice now and it seems clear that if the Bisons ever want to win a game with him in net they‛ll need at least 5 goals. He allowed three weak goals from what were not quality scoring chances, and one mishandled puck set up a 4th. Unless those two games are not all reflective of his unreported exhibition games, this could be a big problem.

The T-irds grabbed a 2-0 lead early, despite not really generating a Grade-A scoring chance. The period ended with the Herd trailing 3-0. I was a bit surprised to see Hawryluk back in goal for the 2nd period. The Bisons adopted a new strategy, so it seems. They iced the puck at every opportunity. This ended the problem with turnovers and the easy goals on long shots. Even when UBC won the ensuing face-off, all that would happen is whack-and-hack in the slot, and Hawryluk does well against those sort of shots.

The Bisons tied the game at 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd. However, at that point they couldn‛t get a save when needed. UBC‛s 4-3 goal was on a turnover by Hawryluk. The Bisons tied it up a minute later, but the tie only lasted 15 seconds. An empty-netter sealed the deal.

The rematch goes Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at The Rink. There isn‛t much for seating so the crowd is really jammed tight.

This was scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd. There was nothing about this on the Bemdji site, but the score popped up on the Bison Schedule & Results page. The win gave the Bisons a 3-3-0 pre-season record, and a split of their tour of the Excited States. Maybe Hawryluk had a good game. I have no details, nor do I know where to find any.

I am not a big fan of Saturday matinee games. This game forced me to miss seeing the Blue Jays blow an 8-1 lead. One good thing: The line-up pages they distributed listed the players by line and specified the scratches.

Here‛s how they lined up, cast in order of appearance:

MANITOBA
Goal
35 Murphy - 1 Harkness

Defence
8 Toth - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk
2 Stewart - 27 Gottfried

Forwards
12 Patrick - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
29 King - 21 Basarab - 20 Apetagon

Scratches
5 Schioler (D) - 13 Sutter - 14 Keane (F)
23 Fawkes (F) - 26 McCorrister (F) - 34 Hawryluk (G)

U.B.C.
Goal
60 Schwebius (30 Lane)

Defence
24 Lee - 43 Pouliot
40 Smart - 26 Lambos
9 Smith - 27 McDonald

Forwards
39 McIndoe - 15 Atkinson - 41 Williams
23 Rask - 37 Douglas - 34 Mutala
17 Kindree - 21 Huo - 29 McNabb
8 Miller - 19 Sandhu - 13 Wismer

Scratches
7 N Form (D) - 10 Doust (F) - 12 Keon (D)
14 Kryski (F) - 18 J Form (F) - 31 Luding (G)

The Bisons had one change, inserting Patrick for Sutter. He also moved from D to LW and his line was the first over the boards in the 1st and 2nd periods. Also, Hooker was injured 5 minutes into the game and did not return. The injured list may have grown.

Quick summary:
UBC: E. McIndoe (11:31 1st) , C. McNabb (13:04 1st) , C. McNabb (16:39 1st) , S. Atkinson (18:17 1st) , C. McNabb (02:13 2nd) , S. Atkinson (09:28 2nd) , J. Lee (03:03 3rd) , C. Douglas (18:56 3rd)
Man: D. Skoleski (02:29 1st) , T. Apetagon (07:14 1st) , C. Hartje (16:25 1st) , T. Apetagon (13:51 2nd) , B. Davis (16:21 2nd) , N. Basarab (17:51 2nd) , B. Davis (19:57 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (31 shots, 24 saves), Man: Murphy (16 saves, 11 shots), Harkness (23 shots, 21 saves)

The Bisons could set records for the most losses by a team scoring 7 goals (maybe 5 and 6, too). Eleven goals in the series, and not even an OTL point. Now many of UBC‛s goals, especially the early ones, were on blown coverages. But the numbers speak for themselves. The game was tied 6-6 after two, and the Bisons had some momentum. Then a drifter from the point eluded Harkness. There were then no more goals until an empty-netter.

The Bison PP was 2-for-6 (4-for-10 on the weekend), which sounds good until you consider that the T-irds went 4-for-5 (4-for-8 on the weekend).

This is an important series for the Bisons. Their 0-4-0 record against the Banjo-Cats (and 1-1-0 record against Holy Trinity) is what did them in last year. These teams split a pair of pre-season games, both winning away. Regina cannot be happy with an away split against The Family Guys on opening weekend and should be feeling some pressure in their home opener.

Bison d-man Chase Hartje was the U of M‛s male athlete of the week last week, as per the linked story. Although the Bisons and Kittens have played just twice each (whilst the rest of the conference has played four games) the Bisons have the top two scorers in the conference (Hartje is 2-6-8 and Brett Davis is 4-3-7) and Devon Skoleski (2-4-6) sits at 11th.

Generating goals has not been the problem for the Herd, it is stopping them. Including the pre-season, they have surrendered 39 goals in 8 games. Simon Harkness has "normal" regular season numbers (0-1-0, .913 S%, 3.26 GAA) after playing 36 minutes in relief. However, he came out of the pre-season at #3 on the depth chart. IMO, as goaltending goes, so go the Bisons. I‛ll be interested to see what they do. Whoever got the win in Bemidji must have played well enough to beat Regina.

The Bisons must have confidence that they can generate goals in this series. I‛ll be hoping they can hold Regina below 8 goals. Also, I'll be interested to see which, if any, of the injured players will return to the lineup. Last week, Schioler, Keane, Fawkes, and McCorrister were on the IL and Hooker was injured early in Saturday's game.

Holy Trinity looked overwhelmed by MRU last weekend. They were also dominated by Sask except when building the 5-1 lead they blew in overtime. The worst news for them is that after the Evil Monkeys lost to The Family Guys last Friday, they might not be so easy to catch asleep again.

The cross-town rivals meet in what could be a very tight series. Bedrock U has split with both UBC and Sask, and the Bluegars were crushed by Alberta before crushing TWU. It will be interesting to see how MRU handles a close series. These teams split four games last year. Of course, with MRU one has to watch their leading scorers. Nolan Yaremko (4-3-7) and Riley Sawchuk (2-4-6) are always worth watching.

Both sides have done well out of the gate but yet neither really looks quite like a contender, at least for now. UBC‛s goaltenders do not look like adequate replacements for Rylan Toth. And I‛m still trying to figure out how Sask fell behind TWU 5-1 before rallying for a win. It would be a real boon if either side could sweep this series.

October 14: BISONS GET GOALTENDING!

Manitoba-73x73.jpg
Regina-73x73.jpg

MANITOBA BISONS 2
REGINA COUGARS 1

➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW

➤ UofR: Team Website

Quick summary:
Man: C. Veloso (04:38 2nd) , C. Hartje (07:00 2nd)
Reg: M. Culling (10:32 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (40 shots, 39 saves), Reg: Meger (14 shots, 12 saves)

This was a much-needed victory for the Herd, which leaves the teams level at 1-2-0 going into Saturday‛s rematch.

The main observations:
1. None of the injured Bisons returned.
2. Goaltender Ross Hawryluk played by far his best game for the Herd.
3. The game winning goal was an end-to-end rush by defenceman Chase Hartje. It was a “Bobby-Orr-Goal”, like the one he had last weekend. He also had an assist and should be the leading scorer in the CW.

I was watching the Jets beat the Rangers along with this one, so a great night for intense viewing. Three CW games started at the same time, so I didn‛t see much else.

The first two periods were extremely defensive. The Bisons built a 2-0 lead, although being outshot 17-13. Manitoba was hanging on for dear life in the 3rd period. The shots were 23-1 in favour of Regina. Hawryluk definitely deserved the 1st star. That kind of goaltending would be the best news from the Bisons going forward.

Quick summary:
TWU: J. Penner (18:15 2nd)
Alta: M. Fonteyne (05:14 1st) , R. Hughes (19:36 1st) , T. Preziuso (01:38 2nd) , J. Prokop (10:25 3rd)
Goal: TWU: LaBelle (40 shots, 36 saves), Alta: Schneider (18 shots, 17 saves)

Holy Trinity kept the numbers down, which was likely their objective. If Vegas had betting, I‛d put money down on the Evil Monkeys for a sweep on Saturday.

Quick summary:
CGY: J. Gricius (13:12 1st) , J. Gricius (15:35 2nd)
MRU: A. Fyten (02:37 1st) , J. Tarzwell (12:16 2nd) , S. Moe (13:17 2nd) , S. Moe (00:00 3rd) , A. Fyten (12:54 3rd) , R. Sawchuk (17:19 3rd) , C. Bouchard (18:47 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (30 shots, 23 saves), MRU Sims (30 shots, 28 saves)

This result surprised me. I was expecting a tight battle. It was only 3-2 entering the 3rd period. Bedrock U went 2-for-6 on the PP, and the Bluegars were 3-for-7.

UBC: C. Douglas (01:45 2nd) , J. Lee (17:02 3rd)

So far UBC is the only team wearing white at home. Odd. But I do prefer the home team in white.
