This week had much more than the usual amount of news. First, there were two additional non-conference games for the Bisons. On December 30th they are off to Minnesota where they will face the St. Cloud State Huskies (currently 11-3-0). The Bisons split a pair of non-conference games in the Excited States in pre-season, but this should be a tough test.

More interestingly, the Bisons and three other CW teams (Sask, Calgary, Alberta) will host Ukraine‛s Universiade team (dubbed "Ukraine U-25 National Team" at Ticketmaster). The schedule is:
Dec 30th: Ukraine at Saskatchewan
Jan 2nd: Ukraine at Calgary
Jan 3rd: Ukraine at Alberta
Jan 9th: Ukraine at Manitoba

The other teams will be playing at their usual arenas. However, the Bisons will be at the Canada Life Centre (the renamed Jets‛ arena). The linked stories contain links to purchase tickets or make a donation. This series is a fund-raiser for Ukrainian hockey.

In last season‛s October series, the Banjo-Mutts played better against the Bisons than any other team all year. They did fade throughout the year, ending with a quarter-final loss against Calgary. This year, they reached their apex against the Evil Monkeys on Oct 21st and 22nd, when they had a decisive 5-2 win and an OTL. Last weekend, they played down a man and were handled by the Bluegars.

The Bisons won‛t have sympathy for those who play a man short, having just escaped such a stretch themselves. Have the Herd turned the corner? Last weekend they throughly whipped MacEwan, who split with Sask the weekend before. So we‛ll see.

Of note, this is the only series between these teams this year.

This the battle of the cellar-dwellers. It is Holy Trinity‛s best opportunity for a 2nd win, and potentially Regina‛s last chance for a rally to get back in the hunt. The Banjo-Cats have five games left this semester, this series, a make-up game in Sask, and a home series against UBC.

I also linked a story about a Mike McGowan, a linesman who suffered a broken jaw last Saturday in a TWU game played at Langley. The photo seems to indicate somebody who looks forward to a diet of soup and milkshakes.

This home-and-home series could be the feature battle of the weekend. The Dinos are on a 9-game winning streak, after starting with three split weekends. The Evil Monkeys are on a 6-1-0 streak themselves. Friday‛s game is in the Town of Bedrock and Saturday‛s game is in Edmontown.

The Bluegars are on a 6-0-0 run. They were whipped by the Evil Monkeys on the opening weekend but since then are 10-0-2. They really dominated the Banjo-Mutts last weekend. Meanwhile, the T-irds have been on a roller-coaster this year. Even last weekend, when they beat the Evil Monkeys on Friday before being beaten 9-1 on Saturday.

Tic-tac-toe, three in a row. This win in Banjoland was a tough arm-wrestle, typical of games between the Bisons and Mutts in the past.

Quick Summary
Man: D. Skoleski (00:37 2nd), J. Hooker (00:48 3rd), P. Malchuk (04:48 1st OT)
Sask: C. Zimmerman (11:39 1st), C. Stebbings (08:15 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (31 shots, 29 saves), Sask: Ross (18 shots, 15 saves)

From the last game, the Bisons made two line-up changes. Forwards Geordie Keane and Tony Apetagon were scratched in favour of Zach Patrick (who played up front rather than on the blueline), and Noah Basarab. Parker Malchuk‛s OT winner was his first goal as a Bison.

Saturday‛s rematch is the final Bison game of the 1st semester, with a chance to get back to the .500 level.

This game had its ebbs and flows. I saw the ending after the Bison game. It was already 5-4 at that time, and the pace and intensity were pretty good, for teams with one win each. Holy Trinity led 2-1 after one, The Banjo-Cats scored four unanswered in the 2nd, and then TWU made it a nail-biter with a pair in the 3rd. Eight of the nine goals were therefore at one end of the ice. Do you think the ice was slanted?

In the Town of Bedrock, the Dinos jumped out to a 3-0 1st period lead, outshooting the Evil Monkeys 20-10 in the process. I tuned in to see the ending of this one after seeing Regina‛s win. The Dinos were really having their way with the Monkeys. Despite trailing entering the 3rd period, the Monkeys were decisively outplayed. The scene shifts to Edmontown for Saturday‛s rematch. Don‛t forget last weekend where a Friday loss was followed by a 9-1 Primate victory on Saturday.

This was the Bisons‛ final series of the first semester, and was also their first split series. It was a pretty good one, fast-paced and hard hitting. The Bisons were down a man, missing Jackson Arpin from Friday‛s line-up.

Quick Summary
Man: C. Behun (15:15 1st), B. Davis (08:01 2nd), D. Skoleski (19:48 2nd)
Sask: J. Kaluski (07:25 1st), C. Petruic (13:35 1st), J. Dmytriw (14:56 1st), J. Kaluski (08:03 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk (38 shots, 34 saves), Sask: Kooy (28 shots, 25 saves)

The Banjo-Mutts built a 3-0 1st period lead, the final of which was a trickler between Hawryluk‛s pads which he wasn‛t quite able to reach. The Bisons were very unfortunate to be behind at that point. The goal-posts and crossbar were their enemy. By carrying the play the game was tied after the 2nd period, including a penalty shot goal by Brett Davis. The Mutts were out for real in the 3rd period, outshooting the Bisons 11-3 and scoring the only goal.

The Bisons have now finished the 1st semester with a 7-9-0 record and seem to be ensconced in the 6th and final playoff berth. They now break for exams and Christmas. Their next game is a non-conference tilt away to St. Cloud State on Dec 30th, followed by a home series against Regina on Jan 6th & 7th, and an exhibition game against Ukraine on Jan 9th.

I didn‛t see any of this matinee. Needless to say, the Banjo-Cats needed this sweep to keep at least one or two of their nine lives available for future use. At 3-9-1 a major winning streak is needed for the Puddy Tats. Holy Trinity was likely resigned to playing a spoiler role this season.

This matinee started at 5:00 CST so I was able to see a lot of it before the Bison game. A split series makes sense here. This win allowed the Bluegars to jump over the Evil Monkeys and into 2nd place. How crazy is that? The Bluegars held a 3-0 lead entering the 3rd and appeared to be cruising. The shots were 24-13 for MRU after two, and 12-5 for UBC in the 3rd, which accurately reflected the play.

The 1st place Dinos have opened a 3-point lead over the Evil Monkeys, and a 2-point lead over MRU, atop the CW standings. The 3rd place Evil Monkeys doesn‛t happen this late in the season. I saw the 3rd period after the Bison game was over. The Dinos had a 3-1 lead and were playing kitty-bar-the-door kind of hockey. They had just 3 shots but that doesn‛t matter when you only give up 8.

Goal: MRU: Berry (25 shots, 23 saves), UBC: Schwebius (29 shots, 26 saves)

Wow, Calgary sweeps Alberta, no easy task.
Calgary looks to be a real threat to secure a first round bye in CanadaWest.
Lot's of competition at the top between Cal,ALB,MRU and UofS.
That's 3/4 losses for the Bears in the last two weekends.

A bonus mid-week game in the CW arose due to postponement arising from a watermain break in Saskatown a couple weeks ago. So we got this game. I missed it because I worked late and watched the Jets annihilate the Colorado Avalanche 5-0. Looks like the Banjo-Mutts still drew 1,000+. The Banjo-Cats held a 3-1 lead entering the 3rd period before their hillbilly brethren rallied. Sask was 3-for-8 on the powerplay.

Sask is now 10-4-2 and Regina falls to 3-10-1. The top four teams in the CW now range from 26 points to 22 points.

Preview: December 2-3: BISON BYE WEEK

Manitoba-2022-73x73.jpg

The Bisons get the bye this coming weekend, meaning no games until after Christmas when they make a trip to St. Cloud State on December 30th. Then comes a stretch of three home games in four days to start the new year. Regina Cougars will visit on January 6th and 7th, and Ukraine‛s World University Games team will visit on January 9th.

Nevertheless, I have posted links for the Bisons‛ stories and the ones needed to follow along this weekend. They have uploaded a background story one new goaltender Ross Hawryluk, and another nice one about the campus efforts on mental health. By the way, there‛s fundraiser at the Bulldog Event Centre starting Saturday at 7:00 p.m. featuring a whole bunch of young local Winnipeg bands.

This is likely the best match-up of the weekend in the CW. The Dinos have vaulted into 1st place on the strength of an 11-game winning streak, yet have just a 4-point lead on the 4th place Mutts. I have linked the Huskie Fan site game stories on the Mutts‛ last two games. Max Patterson of Bedrock U received CW kudos for his efforts last weekend, as per the linked story.

December 3: THREE O.T. GAMES, AND A BAKER‛S DOZEN FOR THE DINOS

These games bring the first semester to a close, and three games went into overtime. Who bet on both Dalhousie and Holy Trinity getting their 2nd wins of the season on the same night? And Nipissing nearly joining them?

Once again, The Family Guys played two-men short. However, this was the most one-sided game of the entire CW season so far. Adam Hall of the Evil Monkeys had 9 shots on goal himself (one went in). It is strange that on a night when every other game went into overtime, the cross-town rivals came up with this stinker. MacEwan really needs a holiday break right now.

Goal: TWU: LaBelle (61 shots, 58 saves), MRU: Sims (19 shots, 15 saves)

This is the upset of the season so far. The Bluegars probably had plans of coasting to a victory and prepping for a challenge for first place in the new year. Holy Trinity had other plans, backed up with a fabulous goaltending performance by Isaac LaBelle. Through two periods, it was tied 2-2 even though MRU led 40-16 on the shot clock. The 3rd period was very one-sided. MRU had 21 shots, TWU had 2. Each side scored once, though. Mitchell Joss had his 6th and 7th goals of the season to lead the Spartans, but it was Landon Fuller‛s 1st of the season which won it in OT. No doubt that Holy Trinity will have a joyous Christmas party when they get back home.

Here's an oddity. The AUS Selects last played the TC Juniors in 2002. That time they lost 5-2 and 3-2, just like now 20 years later.

In comparison, Canada West teams are 5-10-0, OUA teams are 2-13-1, and USports nation-wide teams are 6-5-0.

The complete TC roster is at the link. Canada's games start January 12th against Ukraine. The finals are on January 22nd. The Bisons' top player, Brett Davis, has been selected. There are no players from MRU or Alberta on the team. I suspect that invitations were declined. Missing four regular season games could be costly for those teams fighting it out for a top-two placing. Davis will be missed in their series against MRU and UBC.

There are usually a good handful of ACAC games against the Alberta CW teams, but just the one this year and it's not even in Alberta. Perhaps there are some exhibition games not yet added to the team schedules.

The time has come for the Bisons to wear off the excess turkey with an exhibition game before returning to action next weekend. The Herd last faced this version of the Huskies back in 1988. This will be the Bisons‛ 3rd game against an NCAA team this year, having split two prior games. They lost to North Dakota and beat Bemidji State.

Since the Bisons last played, there have been a host of stories posted at GoBisons.ca, all posted in the links.

The upcoming game against Ukraine is being advertised on the boards at Jets games now. Hopefully they draw a nice crowd.

I listened to this game via on-line radio on Friday afternoon. The 1st period was rather hum-drum, the teams evidently suffering from turkey legs. SCSU scored the only goal. Action picked up in the 2nd, with 6 penalties. SCSU scored twice on the PP, and once shorthanded. The Bisons scored one on the PP, and once more just after a PP. The only 3rd period goal was an empty-netter by SCSU.

The Bisons return home to play a CW conference series against Regina on January 6th and 7th, and then host Ukraine on January 9th.

The Ukrainian team is dubbed the "U25 Ukrainian national team". They seemed to play well organized defence, needed to keep the game scoreless for the final two periods. One would expect them to improve as the tour progresses. I have not seen a boxscore or summary. However, I did watch the game on CanadaWest.tv, which is streaming the entire tour. Some Ukrainian players had black pants, while others had blue. Remember when that happened over here many years ago?

January 2-3: MID-WEEK REPORT

The Bisons are off until Friday, January 6th when they start the second semester at home against Regina with a double-header weekend. Then on Monday, January 9th they will face Team Ukraine at the Canada Life Centre to wrap up Ukraine's Hockey Can't Stop Tour. So in this report, all the news is from elsewhere.

On January 2, 2023, Team Ukraine played game two of their tour. This was a fairly evenly played game, with the Dinos holding the edge in shots by 28-27. Ukraine scored the opener but thereafter were held off the scoresheet. The final goal was an empty-netter by the Dinos. This was the best game of the tour thus far.

On January 3, 2023, Ukraine played game three of their tour. It produced their worst result. If this is an accurate preview of the Evil Monkeys' performance in the 2nd semester, the CW better be ready for them. Ukraine never got on the scoreboard until they were already down 4-0. Ukraine did rally to actually lead in shots, 28-25, by the end of the game. Where finishing touch is lacking from Team Ukraine, the Evil Monkeys have it in abundance.

The signing of Barlage should help the Banjo Cats. He's 6'5" and 210 lbs and peaked at 20 goals in his WHL career. They also lost Tyler Adams, a 5th year forward and WHL grad who had 4 goals and 6 assists in 15 games. He's off to Savannah of the ECHL.

In the meantime, they had the one non-conference game on January 2nd, and eaked out on OTW over Briercrest College. This was the only non-conference game for an ACAC team this holiday season. At 5-6-1, the Clippers are much better than usual so far this year.

The annual report on WHL scholarships is out, and the links include a PDF with every player listed by university. As always, a large percentage of scholarship recipients do not play hockey in the CW, or elsewhere.

This year, 208 of the 341 WHL Scholarship recipients are furthering their education at Universities in Western Canada, with 143 of those playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level in the Canada West (CW) men’s hockey league. In many cases, these student athletes have combined their WHL Scholarship with additional financial assistance from Canada West Universities to receive the Western Canada Premier Hockey Scholarship.

Alberta leads all Western provinces, having produced 125 WHL graduates currently accessing the WHL Scholarship, followed by British Columbia (78), Saskatchewan (61), and Manitoba (48). A total of 23 U.S. and international WHL graduates are accessing their WHL Scholarship.

WHL Graduates continuing to play hockey at the elite Canadian University or College level:
Canada West Conference – 143
Ontario University Athletics – 48
Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) – 23
Atlantic University Sport – 14
B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) – 2
Total – 230

By process of elimination, 111 scholarship recipients are not playing hockey at a university or college.

Welcome to the 2nd semester! It is always odd to wrap Christmas and New Years and suddenly see the end of the regular season closing in quickly. There are just six weeks left in the CW regular season. The Bisons hold the 6th and final playoff spot, while Regina sits in 8th place, 6 points behind. Neither team has any byes left, so each has 12 games left. So anything less than a sweep would pretty much dash the Cougars' hopes.

GoBisons.ca has two linked stories on Brett Davis. One for being named to Canada‛s Universiade team and the other for being the WHL grad of the 1st semester. Davis is 3rd in conference scoring (16GP/10G/16A). Linemate Devon Skoleski is 11th (15GP/9G/12A). Defenceman Chase Hartje is 29th (16GP/5G/10A) and Colton Veloso is 33rd (16GP/5G/8A).

The Banjo-Cats have three players in the Top 40: Tyler Heidt is 22nd (16GP/4G/13A), Brennan Riddle is 31st (16GP/1G/13A), and Matt Culling is 32nd (16GP/6G/7A).

The Bisons will follow this series with a game against the Ukraine Under-25 National Team on Monday at the Canada Life Centre. This is the wrap-up game of their tour of the prairies.

The Family Guys were looking like a playoff contender but faded as the 1st semester wore on. Meanwhile, Bedrock U was going 50/50 until closing with 13 straight wins. They have vaulted into 1st place, but any hiccups (like losing to Mac) could drop them as far as 3rd. This is a home-and-home series.

This home-and-home is the feature series of the weekend. The Bluegars have been teetering on the brink of contender status for a few years now. In my opinion, this is a make-or-break season for them. This series could set the tone for the home stretch. A sweep by one team would boost their fortunes immensely. The Evil Monkeys have been inconsistent, and this is the closest they have come to being in danger of playing in the quarter-finals for a long time.

Note that no players on either side are on the Universiade roster. Perhaps a sign that their focus is on the CW regular season.

Friday‛s game was a dud. Saturday‛s loss was more painful, however. It was a tight game all the way, 0-0 well into the 3rd period. When Hayden Ostir scored his 2nd of the night with less than 90 seconds left, it seemed victory was inevitable. However, Friday‛s bad habits resurfaced and two last minute goals by the Banjo-Cats forced OT, then a shoot-out. Ostir appeared to have the winner in OT but it was called off.

Next up is Monday night‛s game against Ukraine‛s Under-25 National Team, which should be a lot of fun.

This was the feature match-up of the weekend and the Bluegars answered the bell. Right now it looks like the Evil Monkeys are destined to the quarter-finals (perhaps against the Bisons) and would have to win that plus an away series in Calgary to qualify for the U-Cup. Friday was strange in that MRU had a 5-0 first period lead. Blowing that could have been distressing.

I note that the Monkeys started Schneider in goal on Friday, but yanked him after giving up 3 goals in 6 minutes. Berlin finished and was tagged with the loss. On Saturday they were both benched in favour of Kruger. They all have starter-quality stats, but I don‛t think that a CW team can fit three goalies into a 28-game regular season and have a true #1 set for the playoffs.

Holy Trinity gave the Banjo-Mutts a big scare in the first semester, and Friday was similar. The Mutts took a 2-0 lead, but four straight goals for TWU made it 4-2 late in the 2nd. The Mutts scored five unanswered for a commanding 7-4 lead. Two late goals for TWU made the scoreline look nicer. I saw a good chunk of the Saturday rematch. It was your basic whipping.

There have been some schedule changes in the BCIHL. One change is that Simon Fraser‛s series next weekend against Alaska-Fairbanks has been scrubbed.

What a night! I was shocked to see 8,000 people filling the lower bowl of the Canada Life Centre, most assuredly the biggest crowd the Bisons have drawn for a home game. It was clear from the preponderance of blue and yellow flags that most of the fans came from Manitoba's 200,000+ Ukrainian community.

The crowd included 1,500 Ukrainian refugees, Dancin' Gabe, Bennie the Jet, Mickie Moose, and Billy the Bison. Everybody was in good spirits in a party atmosphere.

The only drawback was that the last-minute ticket sales overwhelmed the arena staff resulting in long line-ups at the entry points. They held back the face-off. Which was good because Winnipeg's Hoosli Ukrainian Men's Chorus sang both national anthems. You have to check them out some time.

The video I linked has the CWTV intro followed by Ukrainian play-by-play. The video starts at the national anthems.

Team Ukraine is now off to the FISU Universiade in New York State. Bison leading scorer Brett Davis is off to play for Team Canada. (He was not in tonight's line-up.) Canada and Ukraine open against one another on January 12th.

The Bisons are in tough this weekend. Any points they get are a bonus. They are missing leading scorer Brett Davis (off to the Universiade for two weeks) and dressed one short in last Saturday‛s game. They‛ll need hot goaltending and a couple strong individual performances. Meanwhile, the Bluegars‛ top players declined Universiade invites to participate in the push for a quarter-final bye.

The Bisons gave this one the proverbial college try. It was 2-1 for the Bluegars after two periods, but the 3rd was no contest. For MRU, Sawchuk notched his 15th and Yaremko his 13th. In a statistical twist, neither side had a PP goal in the game.

➤ MRU: Cougars Catchup: January 14, 2023 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Man: none
MRU: C. Blake (13:08 1st), R. Sawchuk (00:32 2nd), C. Hanus (02:11 2nd), L. Gilliss (07:44 2nd), R. Sawchuk (15:47 2nd), R. Sawchuk (00:54 3rd), C. Bouchard (04:36 3rd)
Goal: Man: Hawryluk L (24 shots, 20 saves), Harkness (19 shots, 16 saves), MRU: Sims (19 shots, 19 saves)

This game featured a fast-paced and entertaining 1st period, but in the 2nd period the Bisons fell apart. Riley Sawchuk himself had a hat-trick for the Bluegars. During that period, the Bisons seemed to lose all confidence and basically threw in the towel. Without leading scorer Brett Davis, the Bisons never mounted consistent offence all series. Of note, Davis has scored 4 goals in 3 games for Team Canada in the Universiade.

➤ MacU: Griffins lose key net-front battles in both ends, leading to 5-1 loss at Regina (with boxscore)
➤ UofR: Cougars run win streak to four with 5-1 win over MacEwan (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Mac: M. Pasemko (15:50 1st)
Reg: T. Heidt (10:40 2nd), B. Platt (17:08 2nd), E. Pearce (08:25 3rd), E. Houk (10:25 3rd), S. Mickoski (18:21 3rd)
Goal: Mac: Abel (38 shots, 34 saves), Reg: Evanoff (42 shots, 41 saves)

The Banjo-Cats have come up big win 4 straight wins at a critical time. This vaults them into 6th. However, it seems possible to me that neither Regina, nor Manitoba, nor MacEwan will beat anybody other than one another or Holy Trinity. Regina has no such games left on their schedule.

UBC: C. Douglas (00:31 1st), S. Huo (19:24 1st), L. Kindree (18:47 3rd)
Sask: V. Loschiavo (07:49 2nd), V. Loschiavo (11:10 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Lane (33 shots, 31 saves), Sask: Kooy (33 shots, 30 saves)

It is amazing that the T-irds swept both games, without even an overtime point for the Banjo-Mutts. Both games were as tight as possible. This weekend solidifies these teams as #4 & #5, meaning a quarter-final series, host TBD.

Goal: Alta: Kruger (16 shots, 14 saves), TWU: Berkeliev (58 shots, 53 saves)

This sweep was foreseeable. Quite a one-sided shot clock. Seeing this week‛s games makes that TWU win over MRU seem even more unexplainable.

The Bisons will be without leading scorer Brett Davis, who is in Lake Placid going for gold with Team Canada. Without him the top line has faltered and there is not miuch chemistry, due in part to the injury situation as well as Davis‛s absence.

The last series these teams was wild. The Bisons were unlucky to go pointless. However, since that time UBC has found goaltending, and Manitoba‛s has come and gone. The Bisons have now fallen to 7th place, however still have the inside track on the 6th playoff berth. That‛s because there exists a strong chance that none of the bottom four will win a game against one of the top five. I know that even Holy Trinity did win a game against MRU, but that sort of result is not at all to be expected very often.

Bedrock U had a bye last week, so linked are their stories whIch were skipped over. After a so-so start the Dinos are having a yabba dabba doo time. Meanwhile, the Banjo-Cats are coming off sweeps of Manitoba and MacEwan to get back in the hunt. This is a rare Thursday-Friday series, so here‛s a game report:

Quick Summary:
Calg: C. Gutenberg (00:19 1st), M. Westhaver (16:03 1st), A. Atwal (05:37 2nd), C. Gengenbach (11:28 2nd), J. Maser (00:30 3rd), M. Patterson (04:26 3rd), R. Stotts (06:44 3rd), B. Schoonbaert (10:50 3rd), J. Maser (11:28 3rd)
Reg: R. Krane (09:06 1st), C. Sass (17:11 2nd)
Goal: Calg: Stankowski (31 shots, 29 saves), Reg: Evanoff (40 shots, 31 saves)

That‛s 16 straight wins for the Dinos now. I thought Regina would be a tougher opponent, especially at home.

Both sides have played quite well on occasion, yet have had inconsistent results. This is usually the highlight of the weekend series, and may well turn out that way again this year. Sask was unlucky to lose both games to UBC last weekend. Maybe karma owes them a break. Remember that no Evil Monkeys went to the Universiade.

After suffering sweeps at the hands of the Bisons and Regina, this is MacEwan‛s last chance to gain some ground. I‛m not sure that I will catch much of this series.
