I am starting to think it won’t matter if we end up drafting top three every year.
This.

Lottery luck ... top notch scouting team ... patient and supportive development approach.
These are reasons not to go full tank.

Updated, and as the folks from Russia have seen, Fedotov is climbing the ranks and is having a tremendous season in the KHL. Kid is on fire lately scoring goals, which is great to see.

Nice to see Cooley just keep going right after WJC

Kirk is also starting out well in the Liiga...I thought he'd have a tougher time than what he is...he might still be a useful player. Not sure why they wouldn't just keep him in Tucson giving the lack of talent there.

Others have commented on possible issues of ice time going to AHL vets over prospects in Tucson.

Yeah, wasn't thrilled with Potvin given the job after his stint as interim during time where whatshisname was assisting Tocchet...we need to have a better coach down in Tucson I think. Someone like Varady or VanRyn needs to be hired. We haven't seen any progression by any of the youngsters...it's not like Soderstrom, Kolyanchonok, McCartney, Jenik are having better seasons than they did a year ago.

Conor Geekie NOT having a v good D+1 season. PPG is actually down. Not what you want to see in a top pick :(

He has fewer points than the D Mateychuk drafted right after him.

i haven't liked his game recently. He also isn't getting Bensen, Savoie, even Nash's kid as linemates these days either.

Don’t blame me. I voted for Mateychuk.

I’m gonna start watching Winnipeg a lot to keep an eye on Benson and Geekie.

Geekie has always been 2 C behind Savoie.
For most of this season he had Benson and Nash as his wingers. Recently I think the Benson and Nash switched to Savoie's line and Savoie's previous wingers - Pederson and McClennon moved to Geekie's line.

The Ice just acquired Ostapchuk for 3 1sts. Ostapchuk was a C for Vancouver. Not sure what the new Ice lineup will look like.

Geekie has often been left off of PP1 which hurts his stats. Those minutes will be even harder to come by with Ostapchuk on the team.

Man. I hadn’t heard about Ostapchuk. Love that prospect. Really easy to cheer for. Meat and potatoes, no nonsense. Big fan.

This is the same exact scenario as last season when the ICE picked up Jack Finley.

I don't expect Geekie to be a #1 center or on PP1 in the NHL so I'd argue this is good for him to work through this now as opposed to after the end of his WHL career when he is trying to find his way in the NHL/AHL.

I'm hoping that Ostapchuk lines up on LW rather than pushing Geekie to 3C, which is what happened when Finley was acquired.
I guess we find out tonight.

This trade is a big statement because it basically hamstrings them from building a contender next season. I assume that Savoie, Geekie and Benson are all returning, so you figure that the team will obviously be a contender, but outside of those three I think there will be a lot of team mates moving on from the WHL.

Maybe they’ll trade Savoie, Geekie and Benson? I assume they don’t have great prospects coming up because of strong standings results and making big splashes?
I really can’t say I know much about rebuilding and contention windows in the CHL.
