Did we though?
I think in the long run, we did. I could see a 4 year deal or something. But I have to imagine that deal's gonna look a little wonky by the time he's 36 and still has another 3 years left.

Or, maybe age won't have any effect on him and he just keeps rolling. I love Naz big time, but that's a risky contract considering history, age, and how physical the guy is.

But I still miss him dearly and would have been willing to get a few shitty years out of him to keep him for longer purely on an emotional level. But, that's why Joe is a GM and I am not. Among many other reasons :).

Followed that up with another rush to the net that resulted in another goal for them.

Campbell already chased.

Kadri will give Calgary 3-4 good years, if he gets to stay healthy. After that it will be one of those stinky contracts. I think Flames window will be open for 2-3 seasons now so it does seem like a good match.

Would we really care what the contract looks like in year 5 though? Keep in mind 5 years from now, Rantanen is 31 Mackinnon is 32, Nichushkin is 32, Lehkonen is 32, Landeskog is 34.

Yep, this team will be done at that point. Most likely. Very rarely do players perform at that age on a high enough level to win.

Maybe some of them will age well, but not all of them for sure.

I guess it depends. Does that mean we have to kick Bo out? What does that do to Sammy G?

I think beyond the potential shitty years it probably has a trickle down to other areas of the team that might make it an overall net-negative.

That's just a yuge commitment for a guy coming off a massively spiked career year at his age. I understand completely why they didn't push out a 7 or 8 year deal for him. Like I said, I think it was probably the right call, but if Newy doesn't progress and/or we don't get some deals at the deadline to fill some of that gap, we may find out it was a shitty call.

My only point really here was that I miss the guy like a really good coworker friend that moved on to a new company. It feels empty without him.

Both Malkin and Crosby were in their 30's when they won their last cup.

Makar will be 28 in 5 years, Byram will be 26...we'll still be competitive.

We're losing one of those guys regardless sometime in the next 9 months(Or Toews). Simply no way around that.

But IMO if the Avs had offered Naz an 8x6.5M contract before free agency started back in July, he would have signed that with us. I could be wrong, but I think he really wanted to stay and would have taken that deal.

So then instead of giving Manson his contract(Which is going to age like milk), you let him walk as a UFA and sign any random UFA Dman to play the Right side. And you dont sign Rodrigues.

At least then you've still got a strong 1C and 2C punch on offense, and quite frankly a strong Top 6 forward group in general. And you've still got the elite 4 on Defense(Toews/Makar/G/Byram) for one more year.

We'd be in so much better of a spot IMO. The entire Top 6 is signed for 5+ years outside of Mikko. You dont have all that pressure on Newhook to be a 2C in his 2nd year in the league, allowing him to get softer matchups on the 3rd line. You most likely get to keep the 2023 1st to start restocking the prospect cupboards(Which we desperately need to do despite being a Cup contender still) since we wouldn't have any major needs heading into the playoffs. And then when you do trade Girard/Toews/Byram in the summer you can focus that deal around getting lots of future pieces again and perhaps a good RHD prospect.

Ultimately its all a moot point as what's done is done. But I really think the organizations decision to go with Manson + Rodrigues instead of Kadri will prove to be a significant mistake. Not necessarily one that will completely destroy our chances to win a cup again, but it will make it a lot harder and tbh it could be one we look back in 3-4 years and point to as the end of our cup window.

You know scoring is out of control in the NHL when the Islanders are scoring 7 goals in a game and the Minny/LA game ends 7-6.

I am legit sad watching Kadri kick it with the Flames.

Like, we made the right call. But the team feels incomplete without his swagger and legend. Watching Mack and Bedsy give him his ring the other night after the game had me choking up. Miss that guy heavy.
I’m glad he’s having the early success he has had as a Flame, he was a huge part of this team winning the cup. It’s unfortunate, but the Avs are going to be losing pieces with their upper echelon players needing to be paid.

I do still think they missed the boat by not being more aggressive with Cale in his ELC, think if they had been similarly aggressive two years ago at the TDL we would be back to back champs.

Just wanted to say that I am relieved to hear that the allegations against Cole were false. He's still a bad hockey player but I was developing a soft spot for him last season listening to him absolutely gush about Cale. I'm glad I can still be a fan of that.
