Calgary have a top 3 C group, top 5 S group, a top 10 goalie, and some really good wingers. Once they add another top 6 forward they'll be formidable.

And who cares about who their 7-9 8n are? Avs 7-9 Dmen are MacDonald, Hunt, and Zhuravlyov,... not miles better than Calgary's depth.
Some say this but it's just the media trying to pump Canadian interest

Point was when injuries strike those d will have to play.

Their C depth isn't that good , Kadri is getting massively overrated for the 1 good year he had here ( his others weren't good) and their goaltending is the pits.

Slow team speed and in my opinion they got worse.

They weren't anywhere near formidable last year and they have taken a step back and got slower and older in my opinion.

Not at all impressed by that team in the slightest.

At least 5 other teams ahead of them to worry about in the west and 3 if them are in the Central alone.

Winnipeg alone for example have better goaltending , better C depth and better D in my opinion.

Edit: and better wingers too

The NHL starting its regular season with some random matinee games over in Europe is so weird to me. I'm guessing plenty of people like myself didn't even get to watch the start of the season and a lot of people probably didn't even know it was going on.

Winnipeg a better defense than Calgary?!? Yikes.
Well maybe that's a stretch but there aee zero top pairing dmen at all on Calgary and certainly no Josh Morrissey.

Edit: Calgary aren't as good as Vegas or The Oilers and I am not sure they are even better than the Canucks.

Gonna be tough sledding for them to make the playoffs

They may not have an elite 1C, but they have a very complete 1,2,3 punch down the middle with guys slotted appropriately. Lindholm is a solid 1C, Kadri is a good 2C even if he regresses to 55-60 point pace, and Backlund is a defensively solid 3C who can play up the lineup if injuries strike.

They might lack a true 1D or game breakers on the blueline, but their 1-6 top to bottom is good and can absorb a couple of injuries to still ice a solid top 4.

Slow team speed doesn't matter since their coach has proved he can win playing that style in the playoffs.

Winnipeg have a good top 6 and goalie, but their defense is poor and most of their forward depth is barely above replacement level other than Lowry. Their coach also has like the 8th worst winning % in league history. Oh and their locker room is a circus. Can't see them finishing above Calgary. At best they'll be in a wildcard battle like last year.

Well maybe that's a stretch but there aee zero top pairing dmen at all on Calgary and certainly no Josh Morrissey.
Weegar is a top pairing dman. Tanev is also an ideal partner for him as he's elite defensively.

No no no Weegar isn't really and 2 right shot d on that top pairing will cause all kinds of problems . Talev is a bottom pairing guy on a good team.

Anyways love ya but we are in total disagreement on the Flames.

I am not sure they make the playoffs to be honest

Time will tell but they are certainly no threat to the Avs or even the Oilers

Edit : Let's just say in my opinion Johnny G went to a better team and yes I think Colimbus are better than the Flames and a real sleeper in the east.
Gudbranson went there as well , good tough bottom pairing guy the Flames will miss

How can Calgary's D be bad, they're running Z-Meloche as their 3rd pairing, at one point in time that was our future 2nd pairing

:sarcasm:

Weegar has always been better on the left so that isn't a problem at all. It would be a problem if they tried shifting him to the right where he's never worked as well as on the left.

Most analysts and analytical models have Calgary as a 95%+ lock to make the playoffs. The Athletic even has them as THE favourite for the cup. So you're alone in thinking they're gonna miss the playoffs. Their division has too many bad teams for that to be a serious risk.

Gudbranson is hardly a difference maker. Him leaving and being replaced by Weegar improves their blueline a lot.

Kiefer Sherwood opens the scoring on a new NHL season lol. @Pokecheque ’s favorite
Yeah I saw that. They were talking about him at length on NHL Radio the other day. I certainly hope he gets an NHL regular job, certainly no better opportunity.

All due respect you know nothing about Tanev if you think he’s a bottom pairing guy. Way more people would be talking about him if he hadn’t run into so much injury trouble over the years.

I know their team name is the Flames, but that doesn't mean that when talking about them everything needs to be a hot take

Its not Canadian media saying this, it's common sense. If you truly believe they are the 6th best team in the West I really have no idea what to tell you. You're on an island with that one.

Why does anyone listen to this guy? Just spews stuff to get reactions.
It's bordering on trolling at this point tbh

Weegar has played LD with Ekblad (another RD) for years….
We know but he isn't good there , did u watch the playoffs ? He coughs the puck up a lot and is slow to boot

If you think he is great and like the guy that is your opinion but I don't see it.

He was a 7th round pick for a reason

We will see how it plays out but they certainly aren't better than 2 , and if Vegas rebounds then 3 and then it's a mix if Minnesota , Winnipeg and Calgary.

I dont see which one of those at 3 they are superior too.

So yes somewhere between 4 and 8
