2022-2023 Around The League

Still kinda stunned at the self-immolation of the Florida Panthers this year. From Prez winners to very likely missing the playoffs entirely.

The trade IMO wasn't necessarily a bad one, in fact one could argue it was quite good. But then they went out and got the most milquetoast, mediocre coach they could possibly find, it might have very well derailed them for good with this current core.

The Avs drug things out too far when Sakic was on his last legs, but I understood why. It could have really set us back though.
Yeah, it was clear by the time the Kariya/Selanne debacle was done and over with (and the lockout and salary cap that followed of course) that the window was slammed shut. I don't mind that they made a go of it and stayed competitive (which was mostly an aging Sakic somehow not aging). We all knew they had no shot whatsoever at the Cup but they were actually more fun to watch than they were those few seasons before the lockout. I believe they actually were one of the best offensive teams in hockey under Quenneville.

That was not a bridge too far for me. Would've absolutely killed me to watch Joe Sakic play for another team. Same with Milan Hejduk. The giant misstep was spending big-time $$$ on Ryan Smyth and Scott Hannan. Took a slow, old team and made them even slower. By the time 2008 rolled around and they had Darcy effin' Tucker on the top line, they had to be the slowest team in hockey. Even slower than the disastrous 2016-17 team.

Are Timmins and Rosen thriving finally and becoming NHL regulars?

Sucks to lose decent cheap depth pieces. Could really have used them with all the injuries.

But that's the price for a season like last season.

I don't think there's anything revelatory there, all due respect. Rosen tends to have pretty good stretches, I think he's an NHL regular on a non-contending team, which right now describes the team he's on. He had good stretches for the Avs too.

There was never a question of Timmins' hockey ability, merely his ability to stay healthy. I still think he's one bad hit away from landing on LTIR again, but I hope for his sake that's a long ways away.

I thought Ovechkin killed him about a week ago. Ran him right through the bench. Lol

I saw that. If anything he's lucky as f*** there wasn't a glass pane there. If there was I guarantee you he'd be concussed. Remember when Andrew Cogliano popped him in head with a late hit in the Dallas series? That time he hit the glass.

The price you pay for being a good team if the roster is usually filled and some young guys with potential get lost in the shuffle.

As much as I dislike Quincy he was a solid NHLer that I think got waived by Detroit back in their contending years. And that was not a mistake by them.

Moves needed to be made and Sakic made the right ones.

I hope Timmins does well. I am also eternally grateful for Rosen. If he hadn't pushed Kadri onto trash Bin the Blues would have cruised their way to a cup win and the greatest dynasty in the history of sport.

The 10.5M boat anchor in net is killing them

I don't have the numbers in front of me but I'm willing to bet (not much mind you, maybe a Toonie) Bob hasn't regressed so much as the team in front of him is giving up way more chances. Inexplicably Maurice is known as a defensive-minded coach, yet his teams never seem to play all that well defensively.

They're actually 6th best in the league in scoring chances against and middle of the pack in high danger chances against.

What's shocking is they're better this season than they were last season in that regard. Last season though they were 5th in shooting %, this season they're 19th.

I still maintain that if they're healthy, they're going to turn it around in a big way and make the playoffs. Too good of a team not to.

19 starts for Logan Thompson since November 1st, 11 of those have been .905 SV% or worse including a bunch in the .800s.

I do not believe for one second Vegas is going anywhere without Robin Lehner.

To an extent, we might need to rethink what is an average save percentage is. But his (relative) struggles probably mean they just make a move at the deadline. Somebody like Varly.

I don't think for one second the Islanders are trading Varlamov.

People have been saying for a couple of seasons now that Varly is headed somewhere. Then Isles reporters always come out and say the team has no interest in moving him.
