I’m torn about keeping Girard or trading him. His absence is noticeable in the Avs’ breakout game. It’s not as efficient.

I questioned Girard’s utility as a small D-man but look at Fox and what he has accomplished for the Rangers. Point is, I along with a couple of other Avs fans were more annoyed with Girard for allowing himself to be put in the position of getting annihilated and injured. He should have gotten rid of the puck more quickly but too late now. Anyway, there is a role for a smaller D-man including on a PO team.

Irony is, Girard’s $5M contract is a steal but it’s not ideal for a third pairing D-man. But with Behrens waiting in the wings, it may make sense to move Girard.

I thought G should always play on the left, he’s really too vulnerable on the right.

You can’t let Byram on the third pairing, so obviously he took G spot on the second pair.

Can’t see how to keep G unfortunately.

The Avs may very well win the cup without Girard, but he's still a big piece to the team. The Byram-Johnson pairing has been huge in the playoffs and has covered up Girard's loss well. But we can't forget that Byram is still a health risk, and Johnson is in the midst of a huge resurgence after a couple tough months to finish the year.

Tampa has spread out Hedman-McDonaugh-Sergachev across three pairings for a few years now (and won cups doing so), so Colorado can definitely make it work with Toews-Girard-Byram.

So given Nichushkin’s game 3 performance in a pivotal PO game, it’s safe to say he’ll earn a $6M AAV contract if he he keeps his PO performance going.

Tbh I think with Ceci already, Manson would be a bit of overkill in terms of that kind of Dman.

IMO what the Oilers need the most is a top tier puck mover on that back end. The biggest difference in this series so far I think has been the fact the Avs are able to deploy Makar, Toews, and Byram, while the Oilers just dont have anybody that transitions the puck well on that back end. I know Nurse isn't 100% healthy, but man has he ever been bad this series. Bouchard has a bomb of a shot and I think he's a decent PP quarterback and can walk the blue line nicely... But not much of a transition guy honestly.

Honestly if I were the Oilers I'd look at getting Ghost out of Arizona for cheap rather then going after Manson. I think that's the kind of Dman the Oilers need more then Manson. They've got Ceci in the Top 4 that can play physical and defensive and has actually had a good playoffs and good season. Kulak as well has played well.

Need to more efficiently move the puck out of the defensive zone though.

Ceci is a good all around guy, ideally a 2nd pairing guy but it has been the badly injured Nurse and not Ceci that has been torpedoing our top pairing. Manson would be our Larsson replacement while Bouchard would then be given the offensive minutes that Barrie has been gifted and not done a whole hell of a lot with this season and playoffs. Bouchard is actually a very good passer too, he just isn't blessed with the same mobility that Makar has (he's far from the only one not able to skate like Makar!). We also have Philip Broberg coming up through the system and he can move the puck and jump into the play. I expect him to be on the big club next season. Eventually we will need another LHD to replace Keith but won't have the cap for it due to Nurse's huge raise and trying to bring back Kane.

Barrie?

Also Manson and Ceci are nothing alike.

Yup, Barrie isn't bringing it offensively so I'd sooner have a guy like Manson that is hard to play against, better defensively and can still chip in offensively at times. Ceci is just a steady player that can do a little bit of everything and he's on a very good contract for what he brings for us. Manson is more of a traditional bash your brains in and make it hard on you in front of the net kind of a defenseman.

Avatar bet? :naughty:
I honestly would, except that for now my avatar has more meaning to it than it used to. I think that we could win game 4 and hope that we do so that we have something to build off of for the offseason. You guys definitely have the better team over there but it really sucks that Draisaitl and Nurse are as banged up as they are because we rely heavily on them especially since we don't have the kind of depth that you guys do.

Assuming Val wants to stay I'd like a deal somewhere in the 5.75 x 4 range. It is clear that Burakovsky and Kadri will walk so ideally the Avs find a way to keep a guy who has been a great fit. And hopefully the player recognizes that he has thrived on this team in a way Dallas wasn't willing to wait for. A nice raise but hopefully some loyalty from the player. One can dream.

Unpopular opinion: I would rather keep Girard than Manson if Manson will cost 4M+. Girard's cap hit is only 5M and he is the better player and much younger. Ideally I would love to have a physical defenseman like Manson, but I just don't think he'll be good enough to play on the second pairing and won't be worth his contract.
In a vacuum G is a significantly better player, is younger and on a better contract.

But specifically for the Avs needs Manson is a better fit than Girard; because of his style, because he's a righty, because of his size and because Byram exists.

I think it's worth considering that Canadian teams might find it difficult to attract American/part-American players. And in the casse of Manson, he played the bulk of his career in Anaheim. It might be weather, it might be taxes, or it might be anxiety of going back to oppressive covid restrictions.

My hope is that he might want to play for his dad and be on a competitive team that should challenge for the cup in the near future. If he has no desire to play in Canada then obviously my hopes of getting him are dashed. Such is the life of a fan of a Canadian team, Canadian teams can't compete with the weather of the southern US (and most of the US for that matter) and don't have as favorable tax situations as Vegas, Florida, etc. While Manson was born in the US, I'm sure that he has at some time or another spent time in Canada given who his dad is and the fact that he played for Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto. He may not remember much of his dads first 2 NHL stops since he was a toddler/young kid there, but he should at least remember his time in Montreal and Toronto assuming that he and his mom lived there with his dad back then (I don't know their family dynamic obviously). As for the covid situation in Canada, I don't live there but I know that they have been more strict than the US at least over the last year. I would assume that as the virus mutates and continues to weaken (hopefully) that at some point those restrictions should be eased.

Hah, no worries man. Just teasing from the old days.

Edmonton fought hard and went far this year, the experience will pay off well for the younger guys. It took the Avs awhile to learn how to play in the playoffs.

Personally, the biggest surprise to me was the game 2 corrections were terrible. Game 1 Edmonton played well, McDavid and Draisaitl together were causing the Avs to drop coverages and they were scoring. I'd be more concerned for bad coaching decisions than the injuries, plus the lack of goaltending for the future.

Our coach has done well to adjust against LA and Calgary. He is a rookie NHL head coach after all so I wasn't expecting him to be Scotty Bowman. That said when your #1 D and your 2nd best player (Draisaitl) are clearly hurt, you need a ton of depth to offset that and we aren't there yet. Goaltending is a major issue, Smith is signed for 1 more year and Skinner is ready for his NHL chance. Does Smith get us farther than this year as a 41 year old? You and I know the answer to that. Does Skinner come in and prove to be an average or better NHL starter? I sure hope so. If not then we must make a trade for a better keeper and it will be costly. Look at what you paid for Kuemper only for Francouz to likely lead you to the SCF. Goaltending is voodoo outside of a handful of elite goalies in the league.

I’m desperately hoping Bergeron wants to play another season, but sees how banged up the Bruins are. Come join your childhood favourite team! I really think a player of Bergeron’s caliber will lead to significant development of some of our forwards. Plus, Lehkonen-Bergeron-Nichushkin. The dream.
