He doesn't really need to be quick. Guys his size rarely are. He just needs to react quickly.
Smaller guys sometimes "look like" they are going fast when all those strides they are taking don't cover a ton of ground.

And I agree, reaction time definitely is of high importance.

Never saw the replay at the time, I'm only just now realizing that Xhekaj flew down into the corner to retaliate on the high hit on Slaf from Brown while Slaf forced the turnover to score his goal. ****ing LOL.
Is it only me, but does Brown look like he soiled himself when he saw the Costco Comet barreling toward him?

Dude, you just said you loved the kid after he scored that goal, thats the first time I read a positive comment about the kid coming from you. We all read your posts in the previous threads, we only have to move back a couple of pages to see how much love you have for him...

Im still awaiting for your top 7 from the last draft BTW.

1- ?
2- ?
3- ?
4- ?
5- ?
6- ?
7- Slafkovsky
Thats because of your selective reading

Also I already published my list.

Hilarious......................just curious if anyone knows where Ryan Reaves is these days?
January 5th is already highlighted on my agenda.
I have to admit that I’m a bit nervous about that game.
I’m sure Wifi would not back down, but that is the ultimate test. Reaves has pretty much been the undisputed heavyweight champ for 5~6 years now ?
If this kid can hold his own against Reaves, that would cement his reputation across the league.

Anyone's opinions change after last night? Up or Down for Slaf?

Any softening of stances?

I'm good with him staying at this point and learning the game in the show. In Marty we trust.

Funny thing is that both are pretty fair players beyond their pugilistic skills. But the Costco Comet plays the more challenging position and as he showed in Hamilton last season, he is only at the beginning of his ascendency. Elite size, toughness, adequate mobility, offensive vision and leadership skills, this kid will be a core player for the team for the next decade.

As his legend grows, (warranted or otherwise), you may see a recreation of the Philly Flu in Montreal as some less valorous opposing players develop mysterious illnesses before Montreal games. Scientists may call it: the Montreal Malaise.

You can bet that every NHL player has now seen Xhekaj’s dismantling of Kassian. It reminded me of John Ferguson’s destruction of Ted Green in the playoffs in the 1960s. It was designed and calculated to intimidate the opponent . It worked. The Bruins, as a team, never recovered. Xhekaj sent a message. If anything, it bought him a split second more time when he goes into the corner for a puck. Intimidation is real. It causes opponents to hesitate. That was the real result of last night’s destruction of a hapless opponent. It will take a brave soul to challenge this beast of a player. Some players create time and space with their speed and skill and some with their physical play and reputation.

Best Practices tells us that we should resist changing our opinion after one game. It was at home, against the worst team in the league (who don’t even have a place to play right now), in a blowout… and his goal was a takeaway off a ridiculously bad giveaway (Therrien would crucify the giveaway artist).

On the other hand, Slaf looked very confident and that’s something we needed to see. His trajectory is undeniably upwards. He now justifies to MSL (for instance) his case for more ice time.

If we look at it like it is a 9 game sampler, no harm has been done and lots of benefits can arise from this stint. It’s only if he sticks around and doesn’t produce more than 0.2ppg that we should be a bit ehhhhhhh about his situation.

My opinion on Slaf? I like him, he can be special.

I want Slaf away from the NHL precisely because I want him to show up on the scoresheet, regularly and often. That’s the whole debate right now: NHL, AHL, or elsewhere. But you prancing around, fully torqued claiming “you’re out for blood”, after his goal against Arizona in a blowout has got you confused.

For months now the topic has been simple: what is best for Slaf’s development?

But many of you still want to battle over a fight you’ve already won. So you keep your posture that any comment about Slaf is actually anti-Slaf. This is crazy person behaviour. I hope you can understand this.
I think it's fair to say spending the entire summer going over his Liiga stats ad nauseam, while never watching him play any of those games can be viewed as a certain type of behaviour too.

The goal was very encouraging but honestly more encouraging was that he's starting to get in the position to shoot at all - he had 3 shots on goal - and more importantly was rewarded with more than 10 minutes to play.

It's a one game sample size against an awful opponent but he looked like he belongs, if he continues to show progress he might stick around after all, but if he continues to look invisible against more competitive opposition and his minutes don't go up, then he still should be sent down.

But there's signs of progress there.

Just admit you want a virtual daycare where nobody supports their claims and otherwise genuine argumentation ends with name-calling, potshots, and (soon to be implemented by popular demand) downvotes.

He’s the most consequential draft pick in modern Habs history, it’s the off-season, there is nothing else to talk about AND the tankists want to tank another year… so what did you want, to discuss how many games we’d lose? To speculate about how bad our roster will be?

Not even those who claimed to watch Liiga and Slaf has any response to questions about his game. How his production could be worse than Kotkaniemi’s 17-18 year, for instance.

There was (I assume a Slovak) fan who chimed in the previous Slafkovsky discussion thread and said his Liiga performance wasn’t particularly good. Nobody actually has anything to say about his Liiga performance or production — it’s simply brushed over. So be it.

At first, I felt Slaf's reaction time was way too slow for the NHL, probably because he's used to playing a bigger ice in a lesser league. But, as games pass, I feel he's getting up to speed, understanding he has less space and time now. He's also doing a good job forcing turnovers. I don't know if he'll stay after 9 games but if the trend continues, he might very well stay for the whole year. One thing I wonder though is if he isn't a bit too heavy. He's not an explosive skater and weighing less could help him in that regard.

I think he will play alot in Laval but I also think he will get more than 9 games in Montreal. He can be called up at will.

As George Laraque said on Tomy Marinaro's podcast, Slaf needs to start using his body more to make space and protect himself.

I know it's not his style, but I would like to see him more involved and use more body check in the match.

BTW, GL proposed in the podcast to give MR.X a free boxing lesson, which I think is a good option.

He's 18 years old FFS! That's why they drafted this unicorn kid! Imagine him at 25 years old!

When is this guy going to understand that no one wants his damn free boxing lessons

Yesterday's game shows he might actually put up good numbers in AHL draft+1 like Rantanen.
