Not sure, the “he stopped working hard after being drafted” narrative is true. By most accounts I’ve read he is a very hard worker in the off-season and highly dedicated to his training. It just doesn’t seem to translate to the ice. I have accused him of dogging it before too, but those close to Drouin say his routine is challeging and he brings it, so I’m not sure we can paint everyone with the “if he tries hard, he will succeed brush.”

I've heard this too. Also heard he's overall obsessed with hockey, like even when he's at home he's just watching games and studying the game because he loves it
He’s just much better suited for the European leagues on big surfaces and way less physicality.

To some people, working hard is a job and to others, it's a passion. This might have been the difference with Drouin.

Where would Slaf rank if he was drafted in 2023?

I would say 5 or 7.

1 - Connor Bedard.
2 - Adam Fantilli.
3 - Leo Carlsson.
4 - Matvei Michkov (only reason isn't 2, that's because of his KHL contract).
5 - Will Smith (he looks better than Logan Cooley right now).
6 - Dalibor Dvorsky.

Juraj Slafkovsky will be between Smith and Dvorsky, maybe ahead, maybe behind. But it's 5 or 6 or 7.

The first 4 will be 1st overall at 2022, for sure.

Drouins' problem is between the ears.

He didn't have the mental fortitude to be a French Canadian star in a pressure pot like Montreal.

Furthermore, Habs didn't have a real go to guy, offensive play driver to take charge for him.

Drouin seems to be much more of a complimentary offensive player that would succeed if he just have to walk on the footsteps of a really dominant player.

Put him on McKinnons' line in Colorado and he would do his little things without having to be THE guy who have to take charge.

Concerning Slafkovsky, he won't baffles you with spectacular plays, but I see a continuous, step by step, progression with every games he plays.

He's not self absorbed and doesn't seem to take things for granted.

Maybe Wright is?

Anyway, I think the year Wright took off when the OHL shutted their season down, while others did went oversea to play, hurted him at the draft.

I think it was perceived as a lack of passion for the game and a lack of determination.
And his 2021-2022 draft season did nothing to prove these perceptions wrong.

I'm curious to see what Wright can do at the WJC. Getting taken 4th has to give him some motivation and coming into this tournament as a soon to be 19 year old.

If Wright doesn't look dynamic with loads of energy, I don't know what else can motivate the kid. And it won't be a points evaluation approach... it will be how he can drive play and look good in the eye test. Does he stand out as one of the best on the ice type thing

Considering there is/was recently a slight chance for slaf to be loaned, what would have had to happen in order for the habs to send him? A streak of bad games for slaf, or a losing streak of the habs even if he had been playing well? I still cant wrap my head around the reason why they would wait until the last moment to decide...

Kids studying the game. He's researching how many huge hits you can take before deciding to play with your head up.

Common sense
Tonight his head was up for a good few seconds before impact. Yeah, another big hit he took, but having his head down was not the reason.
The reason is poor iq

What I don’t like is that he isn’t moving is feet he is continually scanning and hesitant not playing enough minutes doesn’t help and that is the kinda thing that is the difference between Armia and Rantanen.
I have been AHL since training camp seem like it was a no brainer, sending him to the WJC could have been like a demotion in disguise (not negative) after a successful WJC keep to help the motivation high.

I am wondering if you wrote the same about Caufield few games ago when he got that huge hit.
Obviously, his positioning needs to improve, but you can clearly see improvements. He avoided one big hit vs. Sens, now his head was not down. Those are positive signs. He is 18y old European kid with 3 months of experience playing in NA ice rink.

He needs to be on North American ice learning the game over here. And the most logical place would be the AHL, where it’s a very simple transaction. This 10 minutes bull**** while getting run over every other game needs to stop.
