Will be a fun final but if Canada plays like they did against Sweden in the third period they will break the Russian goalie and defense apart.
Sweden was quite decent before all those penalties in the third period and Canadas increased effort and tempo.
I do believe Sweden will win the bronze because they have a better goalie. I don't think the Swedish team is that bad, it's more that the Canadians is better than ever in this tournament.
I also believe Canada would have steamrolled Finland in a semifinal as well, why? Defense and the goalies. Let's sum their efforts down below.
Koskenvuo, his positioning is nothing but horrible. He needs a coach to learn him this, otherwise he will not even become a successful goalie in Liiga.
Helomaa? He didn't look explosive or agile even if he got the shutout. His stickhandling behind the net looked really insecure as well. Even if he gave me the impression of being more compact than Koskenvuo, I mean that's not so difficult after witnessing his positioning in this tournament...
Suomi, I actually think this guy played himself out of WJC-20´s for next year as well. Horrible fumbling with the puck and really shaky and nonchalant, and that should be his strengths. Defensively? Let's just say that in two games against Russia he gave them at least two goals by his own. I feel sorry for him but he needs to get a lot stronger and play a lot more decisive otherwise Liiga will be he his ceiling, which still is pro level but I do believe he wishes and wants more.
Vilén? I expected a lot more from him this tournament. Nothing special at all. Can become a good KHL, SHL defender at tops. Perhaps a bottom six in NHL if his development gets going. Was not good in the big games.
Malinen? So disappointed with him in the playoffs. I do believe he has the most potential of these D´s but this was not a good tournament for him. Should get more decisive as well but they are young so I´ll give them that.
Heimosalmi, the only one who had a good tournament among the Finnish D´s. Not that good against Russia but I still think he raised his stocks and played at his top level unlike Malinen.
Offense?
Lambert must be injured or something. Lackluster the whole tournament. Even if I do believe the coach gave him a bad role in this team i don't think he's 100 percent healthy.
Kemell is the second biggest talent after Lambert in this roster and up there. He's able to create a whole lot and will probably get better. He can skate, his handling is really smooth and he reminds me of a attacking Heinola in the way that he is so calm and collected. Will become a joy to watch in the future. Needs to become a little more gritty and tough and play with that lion heart on his sleeve. But man o´ man does he look good.
Tuomaala? I get the impression he´s a bit of a Tolvanen and Laine for his age group, with a lot better skating of course. Great goalscorer, great shot, good skating and above average stickhandling. But not that impressive in 5 vs 5 like Kemell and a healthy Lambert. Not the same finesse as Finnish players like Teräväinen, Aho and perhaps Kemell in the future. I´m sure he´ll be good with a good playmaking center in the future but he's not the one who will carry any line.
Salminen? He's good but I don't see any top6 talent in him what so ever, not sure even if he's a future top9 either. Not now that is. Even if the guy is good he's nowhere near players such as Granlund, Armia etc at the same age and they've only become top6-bottom six forwards in the NHL. I actually don't think Salminen is any better than a comparable player such as Vesalainen at the same age, quite the opposite if you look at finesse, skill and so on. Even if Vesalainens attitude has been questioned a couple of times and Salminen seems to be more hardworking.
The thing is, besides Heimosalmi there hasn't been any other positive surprises in this tournament. Expected or hoped to see a bit more from Matikka, Miettinen and some others, perhaps even Kapanen. Oliver was unlucky with the injury, which probably made him a bit more passive.
