So to recap:

Blue Jays - throw away elite offense by half assing the rotation going into the season and dithering on getting help for the bullpen once injuries hit, also have the worst manager in the league by a mile

Raptors - entering a rebuild year with a controversial pick at 4th overall and a first option player that the rest of the league figured out how to defend

Oilers - spent their first offseason with cap space in many years on questionable players and still going into the season with Mikko f***ing Koskinen in net

Elks - have the worst GM/HC/QB combo in the entire league

Great, I just love team sports.

Hilariously, in a tables of the turn, thank god for Canadian soccer right now.

To be fair...

...interrupted by Da-loser doing his thing.

Anyway, to be fair, it's not like it's that easy to get elite bullpen pitching. And the number of pitchers they did get that have proven to be blah is borderline ridiculous. Law of averages dictates SOMEONE would be good. What we're seeing this year is freakish. In other words, it doesn't matter who they got. The way things are going, anyone they got would have sucked just as much as everyone else. Or they would just get injured. That's usually how it goes during freakish circumstances. Frankly, they might have better luck getting a shaman or priest to bless the bullpen benches, or investing in lucky charms.

When you're optimistic and I'm pessimistic, you know things have gone off the rails. ;)

Yates, Merryweather, Pearson, and Phelps missing significant time hurts. I can't imagine many teams are capable/willing to go out and spend prospect capital to fill those gaps early on in the season. Plus acquiring Soria and adding him to the IL after one appearance just shows the nature of the position. I wouldn't even say them half-assing the rotation hurt the team's chances. Ryu/Ray/Matz/Stripling have performed well enough and with the emergence of Manoah they had enough to stay around .500 until Springer came back.

Every game counts. If they had won more games before those trades actually did happen, they'd have more breathing room to lose games now. Even if they had acquired some average bullpen arms earlier so they weren't trotting out Chatwood and Dolis to lose games it would've been better. Even 2 or 3 more games won during that stretch would've put us in a much better position now.

And then the common thread uniting it all, Montoyo, should never have been allowed to start this season. That's probably cost the team a solid 7-8 wins directly, and maybe another 5+ wins indirectly through carry-over consequences like tiring out your best relievers in a low leverage inning so that they couldn't be used in an actual higher leverage inning in the next game.

Of course every game counts, but how many trades happen that early on in the season where you see legitimate bullpen pieces moved? I'm going to be honest and say that I don't think they expected this year to be the year. As bad as the bullpen has been a lot of other good things happened to the Jays this season. Vladdy's ascent, and Semien and Ray's return to form. I think the entire plan for this year was to grow while being competitive. This includes finding an impact starter (Berrios), get a comp pick (Semien), and now also making re-signing Ray a priority too.

I'm also starting to heavily favour bringing Gibby back at this point because honestly why the hell not.

Well that's what I mean though, they threw away the season by not taking it seriously (or at the very least misevaluating) in terms of contending expectations. And keeping Montoyo is the biggest mistake they've made. Even if he is only a caretaker manager, you can't have one that is this bad.

It’s Grichuks moment according to BJs Central. All aboard Randall’s back. He will save us during Springers absence

What is the love affair with Valera? I don't see anything significant to show he should sniff this roster over Kevin Smith let alone being in the lineup over Gurriel with Springer out.

It's Joe Panik 2.0. Charlie loves him some underwhelming "utility" guys.

Well now Charlie has all the ammunition he needs to not start Kirk even when our bottom of the order is desperate for a big bat.

Awesome!

Even Otto Lopez would be a better option. Velera is proven garbage that is somehow getting regular at bats on a team with playoff aspirations.

Kevin Smith not getting an opportunity is criminal.
