Can’t fault Charlie for Borucki. He just couldn’t execute.

But we can fault him for Barnes. 3-3 game and you bring in your worst relievers against a first place team?

As someone who is very critical of Charlies bullpen management, I will defend him on this one. Borucki failed at getting both Nimmo and Conforto out, which set up Alonso to be the tying run. He was able to get Smith out but by then the damage was already done. Barnes vs Davis is a decent matchup - a power right handed K arm against a right handed hitter who K's a lot. If Barnes was able to get Davis out there, I would presume that Mayza starts the next inning. However, O'Nora missed two obvious strikes against Davis and then Barnes was unable to rebound from that. I think Charlie made the right moves - they just did not work out.

Edit: pitches 3+5 were called a ball for reference

At this point, we may just be looking at bullpen versions of Ray and Walker last year at the deadline. Rentals that cost so little that doesn't matter if we make the playoffs or not. With an outside shot at a trade for guys with more years of control.

Seems unlikely they give up major prospect capital for guys with even 1 year after this such as Berrios or Kimbrel.

Kirk sure isn't helping the pitchers behind the plate at all today. Missed spot or not - those are pitches that are getting all of the plate and he's done a rather horrible job receiving them. It also doesn't help that O'Nora is known to be well... horrible at his job.

I love Bichette. His approach is hard on all pitchers, good or bad.

- Any deadline deals that can help the jays will cost us top prospects
- If the Jays are sellers, they'll receive next to nothing since the rental market isn't what it used to be.

Absolute state of Jays talk on sportsnet.
