Pretty pathetic way to go out. Team showed zero heart down the stretch. Got embarrassed game in a game out by shit teams and top teams. Really disappointing
Yeah, I was wrong to compare this team to the Leafs. At least the Leafs had the decency to make the playoffs BEFORE they choked. The reality is that hotstreak they were on was an illusion. This is the real Jays and what we're seeing now is a correction. They're not quite there yet, they're still too young in many ways, and I always thought they were going to make it interesting but not quite make it which is why I guessed an 85-88 win season which is normally the record that leads to such a result.
But hey, it isn't over yet. The Yankees are out of reach but it's still possible Boston and Seattle crap out and the Jays make it up in Baltimore. Then again, when your entire strategy is hoping the other teams lose, chances are you're sunk.
The Rays have been just as bad as the Jays in 1 run or extra inning games.
The Rays win games, though. They know how to comeback in a game. When the Jays get down, unless Springer is around and on a hotstreak to bail them out or someone is actually on base when Semien hits a home run, they stay down.
This article from fangraphs (The Giants Capitalize on the First Pitch) talks a lot about why swinging at the first pitch is more and more beneficial in today's game. To point, this graph, which shows the dramatic decline in wOBA when falling behind in the count.
I'd love to see a graph that charts how often graphs are used to justify poor play, lol.
