I don't generally like the whole "manufacturing a run" concept because smashing doubles are still 'manufacturing' a run with the same effort and skill as playing small-ball. But I think if you're going to use the traditional definition it should still be required that the run is cashed in because of something your team does. Like a slap single, or a suicide play, or a sac fly or whatever. They scored because Kirk whiffed on that ball. If he hadn't done that the batter flies out and it's nothing for the Tigers even though they didn't do anything different between the two scenarios.
