He should be used as a part timer and bench bat. I don't think he's an everyday player but montoyo seems convinced. Those 120 at bats last year were probably more of a fluke.

He did look good last year and I'm not going to take that away from him.

But at this point it would seem like a better idea to have McGwire on the roster and to use Kirk as a DH, and give Rowdy fewer at-bats until he gets his form back.

These two games are a continuation of a poor spring training for Rowdy and I'm not sure how long you can wait on him when you have better hitters sitting on the bench.

It is typically a bad idea to DH your backup catcher.

I disagree. How often does a catcher get hurt and have to be removed from a game? Once or twice a year? If that happens in the 2nd half of the game you're changing relief pitchers almost every inning anyway and have 3-4 bench players to PH so there's no real loss. The only time it matters if it happens early and your starter has to hit. So an auto out instead of Rowdy for 2 at bats per year. Rowdy is getting out 65% of the time at best anyway, so on average over the course of a season you're costing yourself about 70% of 1 hit. If your backup catcher is your best extra player he should DH.

I like Rowdy so I'm not suggesting we do it all the time, but I would try to get Kirk in there as a DH enough so he's playing 60% of the time. catch 3 times every 10 games, DH 3 times every 10 games

#FireMontoyo

- Phelps pitching in a high leverage situation
- Jansen bunting in the 10th inning with a man on 2nd and nobody out (after taking the lead)
- Kirk not having a single AB so far

Seriously, f*** this clown of a manager
