Binghamton too.

Yes they were. Binghamton was really impressive because at Christmas time, they were at the bottom of the standings in their division and then they went on a tear, climbing up into the playoff picture. They had 9 wins in their last 10 games.

Laval was also doing real well before the season was stopped. They were on the outside looking in, but they were on a really good run. They had won 7 of their last 10.

The North Division was a really tight division and the competition level was high.

What I meant was... Why does the AHL get to do an actual preseason, and the NHL doesn't get that luxury?
There wasn't enough time between the decision to start the NHL and the start of the season with all the covid-19 protocols and quarantine requirements. The schedule is pretty tight, so they didn't want to delay any further. Plus the owners probably felt it wasn't worth the cost.

For the AHL teams, the quarantine stuff was already done because those players were in NHL camps, and now they have three weeks between the time they finished NHL camp and the start of the AHL games, so they might as well have some preseason games to fill the time - particularly since most of them will likely be held at practice rinks, with minimal staff, bus transportation, maybe even using assistant coaches for refs, etc, so the cost is a lot less. Plus the AHL may not even have playoffs, or if they do it will likely be very short, and they are playing less games, so their schedule isn't as compressed.

AHL is prorated depending on how many games the league plays......if the season is shut down after a month, they won’t be getting 42 %
As far as the taxi squad goes....that is a fluid squad which can change throughout the season.....a TS guy this month may be in the AHL the following month and vice versa.....while on TS they receive AHL salary plus NHL per diem.....

More hyperbole from the "sports journalists" @ NYP. :whatever:
Three teams have opted out of 2020-21, leaving 28 clubs to play the season. The schedule will differ by division. Some teams will play as few as 24 games. Others may play as many as 42. Most two-way contracts mandate salaries in the range of $70,000.
You do the math. If players’ pay is strictly prorated, a player on a 24-game team making $70,000 would earn the grand total of $20,487 — before taxes. Players on teams on 42-game schedules would then earn a pre-tax $35,853 that they’d shouldn’t spend in one place.
Come on, man.
And in addition, these players have not been paid since receiving their final 2019-20 paychecks in the middle of April. That’s nine months. It may be nobody’s fault, but there is a crisis consuming the bedrock of the NHL’s development and it is crushing a wave of prospects.

Yep, sounds like hyperbole to me.

According to Marcotte (Laval's play-by-play guy), Laval's camp is set to start this Friday, the 22nd. They will have camp in Montreal and will occasionally practice in Brossard. They clearly won't be in Place Bell. Which is efficient since all the testing and screening spots will already be set up in Brossard and Bell Center. It saves them from having to set up another spot in Laval.

He also says that the AHL schedule is still not confirmed. He also said that the Senators have yet to decide where they will situate their AHL affiliate (Belleville). It sounds like they will do like the Habs and have them in their NHL rink.

He mentions how it will be done this year in terms of his play-by-play. He will be in the studio when there are road games. He won't travel with the team.

He also says that the AHL is going ahead with a season, but they still don't know if they will have playoffs.

If there are no playoffs, why play?

So Canucks will share their AHL affiliate in Utica with the Blues. But they will also send some players to Manitoba Moose (Winnipeg's AHL affiliate). It does make sense they will want to keep AHL guys in Canada. It will be much easier for call ups and assignments to bypass the 14-day quarantine that would be required if a players was crossing the border.
