Duran now with another tank job

Kids gonna be the starting CF by midseason
Midseason might be a little optimistic, unless he's absolutely raking in Worcester. He's had half a season at AA. Let him have some success in the minors with the new swing.

I have to say, I didn't realize until recently how big Jarren Duran is. You hear about a kid who was a speedy 2B in college that's been converted to CF in the pros, and I tend to think he's Mookie Betts' size.

He's not. Kid is listed as roughly the same size/weight as Sean Kuraly. And from the pictures I've seen of him, it looks like nearly all muscle. Gives you hope that the changes to his swing to unlock some of that power are legit.

This works for me...

So I was bored and watched all 28 of his home runs. I probably wasted my time, but I was bored. When the video started, I noticed a few HR's right off the bat (pun not intended) that were in blowouts. So I was curious how his HR's broke down that year. I wanted to simplify it as best I could so here's what I came up with. Of his 28 home runs that year:

6 Came in blowouts - 5+ runs down
6 Came when they were losing, but he pulled them within 1-5 runs
3 Came when they were trailing to tie
5 Came when they were trailing/tied to put them on top
8 To extend the lead

2 Grand Slams included above

Obviously more factors that go along with this that I didn't get into.

Love this kid.

Super fast, has "freak strength", a huge throwing arm, terrific center fielder, and he won the NY-Penn League batting title as an 18-year old at Lowell. If he figures out how to drive the ball rather than slapping at it, he could be a terror.
I think I read something that indicated he added some muscle and subsequent pop. Looking forward to watching him.

I know that Gammons wrote that someone with the Sox told him that Jimenez is built like an NFL running back. I read something where the Sox' head of minor league development was quoted as saying he's got "freak strength". It's not a strength issue with him - it's a swing issue. When he was in Lowell, he was just looking to make contact and put the ball on the ground and beat out throws to first. I think he's clearly capable of more than that, though.

SoxProspects News: Scout Chatter: Gilberto Jimenez, Brainer Bonaci and more from Fall Instructs
Here's the article that referenced that he bulked up to 212, which resulted in his speed grade dropping from an 80 to a 70, and was driving the ball with more authority during fall instructs.

I believe Eddie Romero has him at 215 of muscle right now

Instead of slapping the ball around and using legit 80 grade speed to cause issues he is now driving gaps with 70-75 grade speed

I think this dude is gonna perennially lead the league in triples. He won’t be able to do this against big leaguers but there have been routine balls hit to the 2B that he beat out, and he was pretty regularly turning routine singles into doubles against lower minors kids that were caught off guard by his outrageous wheels

If he grew up in the states there is a 0% chance he’s playing baseball- let’s put it that way. FREAK athlete. He’s only really been switch hitting since turning pro or just before that but he’s already damn good from the left side. He’s shown an ability to make huge strides in short periods of time, I think he’s going to be a special one. Imo he will end up our best prospect since Mookie

They apparently caught him as a tryout player and got him locked up before other teams could get a good look at him. He was very unheralded. They’ve done a great job finding these lower bonus guys that have turned into big time young talent- Darwinzon, Gilberto, Mata. IIRC 2 were lower 5 figure bonuses, the other was a 4 figure bonus (I know Gilberto got 10k....I want to say Mata was 25k and Darwinzon was 7.5k Or something )

Don't forget Bogey. The Sox were looking at his brother Jair when he said that Xander is an even better player. Xander had chickenpox at the time and wasn't at the field like he usually was. The scout asked him if he could persuade him to come to the field to work him out. Xander ran to the field, worked out and was signed before anyone saw him.

Not great news on Bryan Mata, but it could certainly be worse.

Just another reason why if all things are equal, I'd lean seriously towards a pitcher at #4 in the draft this summer.

f*** shit balls

Better be a very slight tear, otherwise I’m not a fan of kicking the can down the road with the TJ surgery. It doesn’t happen every time but it seems like Tanaka is the only person I can think of it that rehabbed it successfully without needing surgery. I’m sure there are other examples but just in our own staffs experience this is what happened with Richards and Sale

I’m tellin ya this may be the best pitcher in the class, he deserves to be discussed with the top 3. Looks like 3 + pitches with an ideal workhorse frame and good command. Also throws his changeup in-game, which Leiter and Rocker do not really do with confidence. Holds his velocity all game too.

Hill with a bad game. Rocker was good.

jives with the reports the Soxprospects guys have been putting out for awhile

he’s got the physical tools where he’s almost a lock to be average out there provided he makes some improvements on his reads- which he will given reps. But they basically say he looks like an infielder getting initial jumps off the bat....which makes sense because he was drafted as a 2B

his college program is absolutely miserable in terms of getting kids pro ball ready. Matt Duffy is another guy that left school and immediately made swing changes and made the show. They basically had him slapping at the ball

The last prospect we converted from 2B to OF turned out alright.

6903AF51-8DAC-4292-B86F-242017E91F99.jpeg

first full pro season from a light hitting middle infielder with a slugging of .307 but a solid approach

Now a plus power/plus hit gold glove right fielder with speed

player development in baseball is so damn random sometimes

Also the only reason Mookie got moved off of SS to go play 2B was his arm strength. Which would be hilarious if you said that today, because he’s got a gun

honestly we will probably not see another player explode out of nowhere like that ever again. Drafted with two tools, finished with 5

This guy must be afraid to unpack. :amazed:

....he’ll be back

I’m surprised they tried to sneak him through tbh, I figured they’d try somebody else knowing teams would claim him. They did pivot to DFAing Walden for their prior roster spot need and snuck him through. Figured they’d try Schreiber before Payamps. Or even Brewer for that matter
