I would have thought Chavis was a lock to make the team?

I really like Chavis but I think he's going to be another Travis Shaw type who we don't have room for but might be productive somewhere else. He's not a great defensive 2B, Kike gives more value there, Throbby D has supplanted him as the power hitting 1B, and Marwin Gonzalez's versatility might just push Chavis out the door. There's just not a lot of space for him.

Admittedly I don't know much about Hernandez or Gonzalez outside of the few times I've seen them play on their old teams. If they are better and more consistent than Chavis then I agree that it may be time for him to play elsewhere.

Chavis is going to have to significantly outplay Arroyo to make the team given his options left and inability to handle SS

wouldn’t be the worst thing, he doesn’t have a ton of AAA experience

Kike Hernandez is flat out better.

in terms of how he stacks up with Marwin, I suppose it depends on projection since Marwin has about 8 years of average to slightly below average production compared to Chavis's 1 1/2 of average to bad projection, but Marwin is a plus defender at three positions as opposed to Chavis who is a bad defender at two positions and an average 1B. In the end I think the choice is going to be between Chavis and Dalbec for 1B. Who they think has more upside and consistency, and really it looks like Bobby right now.

Thanks!

I'm very much out of tune with the Sox as they were so easy to ignore last season.

I don't blame you.

But the only returning member of the starting 9 who had a bad year last year was JD, and there's plenty of reason to believe he'll bounce back with Cora back and more support around him. The dead spots in the lineup last year were Chavis, Peraza, and Benny. Two of the three are gone and the other looks like he's going back down to AAA. Even Jackie had a good year at the dish in 2020, if he does end up eventually coming back.

A bounceback year from JD and replacing Chavis-Peraza-Benny with a situational rotation of Kike, Marwin, Dalbec, Franchy, and Renfroe, which I trust Cora to get the most out of, and this lineup is going to be among the league's best. Starting rotation is the bigger question mark for the overall success of the team.

Have a list of your goods and bads? I wasn’t able to watch today as much as I would have liked.

I only caught a couple innings myself but I saw them hit against Minter and I saw Seabold and Grotz throw

Minter is a high end reliever- one of baseballs best- and our first round pick out of HS got a knock off of him. Downs looked overmatched again him but that wasn’t entirely surprising- it was more surprising that Yorke didn’t look out of place

Seabold had all 3 pitches working and he spotted them well. Change up is really good. I think Grotz is AAA depth

Baseball is back!

My 51 year old self still gets giddy every March 1st when the spring games really start going.

As a ten year old kid, who had an enormous back yard, baseball was my life. No technology, but I knew every player, on every team, and what number they wore. I played Strat o matic...I played an imaginary season on Head2Head Baseball and kept stats....and that was on the rainy days....sunny days...wiffleball...baseball....we had "leagues" where we kept stats of the players...

I love hockey....I love football....I did then as well, but there is nothing like baseball. Maybe because it was the one sport I was really good at, but those summer nights, watching the game....nothing like it.
