How the heck did 8 players get infected between boarding the plane and touchdown in the bubble?

I can’t see this ending well for Germany. Even if they quarantine until the 24th how is that enough time? And surely other Germans will test positive?

I read elsewhere that the players disembarked in Reykjavik and wandered through the airport. That’s NOT a bubble. The iihf was definitely disorganized on these flights.

I can't be sure of this but based on the flight tracker I was following for the flights they didn't go to the terminal building in Reykjavik but some other FBO to get fuel. It would be unlikely they went into that FBO and then reboarded since they would need airstairs, and I doubt most FBO's could handle that number of personnel just hanging around for no reason just to reboard. Plus the fact there were video of the other teams waiting onboard their aircraft in Reykjavik and were told they weren't allowed off.

Not sure what information I'm supposed to be seeing in that link to support them getting off the airplane in Reykjavik.

How does people not understand there's an incubation period for this virus? It's entirely possible some of them contracted it from Lukas Reichel or Nino Kinder for example because it can be a long time from exposure to testing positive. They were all in contact with them less than 2 weeks ago.

Exactly. If these players tested positive the day they entered the bubble or the day after it is far more likely they got infected 4-5 days earlier as that is the most common incubation period. In other words they got it a couple days before travelling and it popped up once entering the bubble.

no. Reichel and Kinder never went to the training camp and never were with the team.

@PanniniClaus: Testing negative doesn't mean you don't have the virus.

The tests are not perfect. There is a margin of error.

There is also a delay between the time of infection and completion of the incubation period that would then disclose the virus.

Germany has a lot of community transmission right now. Its very likely that one or more persons were already carrying the virus when they tested negative before arrival in Canada.

Its also likely that others within the group have acquired the virus since arrival in Canada and are among the eight who have tested positive, or have not yet tested positive and are still within the incubation period and are possibly passing the virus on to even more people.

This highlights the limits of testing. It is an essential tool, but you can't rely on testing to ensure that everyone within a group is COVID-free. The same is true of vaccination 'passports' or what have you. You still have to assume that everyone, including yourself, is positive and govern yourself accordingly.
