Losing Marner sucks. Like really sucks. But that's the game (and I didn't talk to ever GM in the game, but those I did weren't exactly selling the farm to get him!)

Zacha had a nice breakout season with underlying numbers that may not be the best, but we hope if there's a place he can continue this breakout, it's Toronto. Super excited to get Mercer, and him being a first last year (one where some lists had him in the Top10) combined with the 2022 first we got in this, it's nice to regain some draft capital (the added sixth is going to add some flexibility too). Cole Brady is a NCAA goalie who had a decent freshman year in a Covid season, and we need a goaltending prospect to strike gold, so the more we have the better. DiPietro didn't play this year, but signed as a free agent with BUF just over a year ago, out of the NCAA.

The real surprise to me here was Subban. Did not think it would make any sense to bring him in, yet here we are. Once we were able to get BUF on board... $9M for Subban, no thanks, he's just not that player anymore, but $2.25M for Subban is a little more interesting

Great insight; I thinks it's an awesome deal for all sides.

While we give up a lot, there is logic to it.

We gave up Zacha, but got Mitch Marner - an absolute top-tier player in this league. We also got Joey Anderson, who we think has all the tools to be an amazing depth guy in this league who will add that competitive element to our club.

You're gonna have to give up top talent to get that, and we gave up Dawson Mercer and Cole Brady. Dawson is obviously a great talent, and Cole has had an amazing career to this point. But we had to pay, and we did. We also gave up picks to do that, but we also got picks back for other deals which we plan on addressing later on.

We had to give up Vancouvers 2022 1st rounder, but we took the leap in losing Miles Woods in the hopes we could parlay it into a big piece. We feel we've done that.

We also lost PK Subban, and I don't want to gloss over that. He hasn't shown his greatness as of late, but this is a highly impressive player who has been an elite player over recent years. He has a lot more to give, and we are happy to give him a chance to get after a Cup at this phase in his career. We're happy to give him that chance.

This was a great example of a meeting of the minds and understanding where the respective GMs were in terms of where they were at and how to make each other better in their phases of development. Kudos to them.
