Physically looks like he's shaken off his injury. Playing very well - driving hard to the net

Every time I watch Knies > Cooley.

Cooley seems like he is just as likely to be a Barzal or Mittelstadt

Snuggerud is fine, but clearly a passenger with these two.

Knies drives play so much more than some of his macro stats indicate. If the guy had a few more secondary assists he'd draw less scrutiny lol

Agreed 100%. I also think he'd produce more away from Cooley since he doesn't have the puck often.

The leafs can sign Knies at any point. There isn’t a time frame. Knies could have signed in October, he could have signed in December or January. We’ve seen college players sign after the world juniors before as well. Most recently Tyler Boucher of the Ottawa Senators did.

Only reason Knies wasn’t signed as soon as NCAA season was over or even around the trade deadline is because of two reasons.

1. Minnesota is a good team!

2. He literally said his goal for right now is to win a national championship and the leafs are supporting him in that dream. He has an opportunity to do so this year.

That’s really it.
I am not 100% familiar with the rules but I thought once he signs a pro contract he can no longer play for his college team?

I believe the entire plan was always to go back a year, play another year and try and win the championship hence leafs can only sign him once college season is over

Yes once he signs he cannot go back to play for his college team, but there are other options available. If Knies had CHL rights which I’m assuming he most likely does, he could be assigned to whichever WHL team holds his rights (Toronto did this with both Tyler Biggs and Jeremy Bracco). If he signed after he turned 20 he could have also been assigned directly to the Marlies. He could have also signed a futures ELC and an ATO with the Marlies.

But the leafs want him with the big club. There were many options to continue his development should he have decided to sign a contract earlier in the season.

There is every year, the likelihood that Knies wins a roster spot on the top two lines and gets steady ice time is doubtful. The hype train on this kid has gone bonkers, I've seen post where people expect him to slot in 1st line right next to Austin and be a difference maker. Lets mute our expectations on this kid, for some people Knies can only under achieve because they have such a high opinion of him. If he scores 15 and gets 20 points next year in the NHL that is a massive win for our franchise.

Hasn't scored a single NHL goal all season, been invisible every night, he's getting close to bust territory.

I’m not understanding how it’s doubtful? We currently have 1 NHL LW under contract for next season. Sam Lafferty and there’s a possibility he may have to play Center next year. I think the odds of Knies playing in the top 6 next year is pretty high.

I think we’ll be seeing a ton of youth injected into the line up next year. You have to think Robertson will get first crack at one of the spots, but then you have Steeves, Hirovinen, Abruzzese, Holmberg.

I think we are going to see a similar situation to the 2016-2017 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Not that the Leafs would assign him to the WHL, but I don't think he was ever drafted. So no team holds his rights.

That's funny because the likelihood that Knies does not win a roster spot on the top two lines and gets steady ice time is doubtful. The hype train on this kid has not been enough, I've seen posts where people expect him to slot in 1st line right next to Austin and be a difference-maker, this seems possible. Let's mute our expectations of this kid, for some people Knies can only overachieve because they have such a low opinion of him. If he scores 15 and gets 20 points next year in the NHL that is a replaceable player.

Perhaps some people believe only 1st. line calibre players play on the 1st. line.

They're just ignorant.
So no one is offended, ignorant does not mean idiot, it can refer to lacking in knowledge.

One can go back decades and decades and see players playing the 1st. line who are not 1st. line talents.

Exactly, is he not everything we have been saying our first line needs since the departure of Zach Hyman? I just watched Knies' season highlights. This guy DRIVES the net every chance he gets, whatever line he's on is going to have a bunch of tap ins and he himself will generate goals because he isn't afraid to get to the net.

Beautiful contradictions fuel Matthew Knies' drive for national title, and the Hobey

'A few weeks ago, after a ridiculous no-look, between-the-legs drop pass by Knies had set up Cooley for the eventual game-winner versus Ohio State, Gophers coach Bob Motzko talked about how much Knies has grown in his second season of college hockey and added that he can’t wait to see how much Matthew grows in year three with the Gophers.

It brought a chuckle from some of those in the media scrum, but as the end of season two nears, several people close to Knies, and to the Gophers, have indicated that his timeline to get to the NHL might be more next year than next week, and another season in maroon and gold is not a crazy idea.

I would be shocked if that happens. I can’t take a year of people saying Knies won’t sign with the Leafs.
