But those guys play 10min a night anyway, so what's the difference?

The difference is they are actually playing and learning on the fly. So they can learn this year for next seasons playoff push and then the next wave of guys (Clarke, Turcotte, etc) come in next season for the same learning. A staggering approach to playoff hockey for the youth instead of all at once like Edmonton and others.
