5th highest paid forward on the team.
I don't know what answer to give you. I'm not the coach in charge of any of this stuff. It's just pretty clear that the more experienced you are, the more chances you get. It's not this isn't working for a few weeks, you're out. It's obviously not 45 games and it's not working, you're out. It'll be at least one more game. It's the same with Kopitar's minutes. How many times can people ask why? It's because he's Kopitar, has 2 Cups, been loved by every coach he's ever had since he was 3 weeks old, etc.
I'm sure you can go through pretty much every team, and it'll be the same story. The more veteran guys get their time. Unless a young guy is just undeniable, he'll probably be brought along slowly. Especially when you bring in vets to play scoring roles. Young guys don't usually push vets down the lineup. You purposefully open up a spot for a young guy, by not keeping or bringing in a vet, put him there, leave him there, and then he gets the chance to stay in that spot and prove that he sucks.
It's weird how that works.
For some reason, Byfield has been gifted the 3C job since he got healthy - no matter how ineffective he is. It's clear, from the stats, advanced stats and eye test.
I look at Vilardi last year
54 games 10-13-23 -8
vs Byfield this year
19 games 2-1-3 +0 (57 games 6-3-9)
And I remember Vilardi getting benched mid-season when he definitely needed a break.
In Detroit - Raymond and Seider have been given every opportunity since game 1. First line. 1st unit. First PP unit. Etc.
I think the stats for both guys are a bit inflated, but it beats the f*** out of watching them struggle all year. Then again, Detroit isn't playing for anything.
Iafalo's had a weird year.
First 13 games 6-7-13 +4 18:13/night 47 shots
Next 31 games 8-7-15 +1 18:58/night 82 shots
Last 13 games 0-2-2 +1 18:17/night 29 shots
Last year he averaged 19"53/night
Something happened in the last 13 games where Iafalo's shots are way down. But they still aren't bad. Might have a lot to do with the powerplay continuing to suck.
The Red Wing Iafalo reminds me of is Bertuzzi. Heavy stick. Wins board battles. Keeps shifts in the ozone.
Bertuzzi was having a great season until slowing down over the last 15 games or so.
Kopitar will keep getting the minutes because who else is going to get them? Byfield? Lizotte?
