Just a reminder that even factoring in the 1-5-1 start, the Kings currently project out to 95+ points over a full season. Currently third in the Pacific by points % and will be 2nd with a win over Seattle tomorrow.

Considering the last 3 years and all the injuries, that's a massive improvement.

Iafallo - Kopitar - Kempe
Moore - Danault - Ardvisson
Athanasiou/Turcotte - Byfield - Brown
Lemieux - Lizotte - Kaliyev

the Kings will need to decide who plays in QBs LW… Turcotte, Kupari or AA
If it’s Turcotte or Kupari then you need to trade AA
If it’s AA, then both kids should be sent down to continue developing

One of my clients(I'm a barber) asked me today when did I think the Kings would call up Byfield? I said maybe 2-4 wks. But I'm starting to think there is an outside chance he doesn't get called up at all this year. Unless he absolutely ready, forces his way onto the team with his play, and, the Kings continue on their upward trajectory ....I can see them letting him percolate with the Reign until he LOCKED IN.

Having said that, I think there is very little chance that happens.

When Athanasiou has been in the lineup this season he’s been very good. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he plays instead of a rookie (Turcotte or Kupari) when he is cleared.

3 goals in 11 games and +4. That’s much more productive than anyone else on the third line except Brown.
This season isn’t about production in a vacuum, it’s about developing the young talent in real-world situations.

Think about the good done by giving game time to guys who are in the long-term plans over a guy like A2 who is gone this summer. Especially in a season of building like this one.

I think this season is currently about making it through each day. The Kings currently have 6 players unavailable to them due to injury or covid. The Reign are skating 11 forwards tonight and one of them is an ECHL Defenseman here on an ATO because of all the injuries and call ups on the blue line.

Byfield will certainly be back up with the Kings. He's playing great hockey for several games now in Ontario
AND

3 current Kings that are playing; Fagemo, Turcotte and Kupari, Byfield is the superior player, as of this very moment, as in 'play for one of them next game' I realize Fagemo may be out soon and that spot is Lemieux's. Matters not. Quinton will be on the Kings and I believe it could be as early as next Tuesday, the next home game. Or perhaps they take him on the next long east coast trip; 23rd to 30th. Certainly by February, if not on that trip.

covid and injuries affect almost every game right now and will be, the remainder of the way. That also favors him, getting back with the Kings.

I doubt we’ll get anything close to a second or third for AA.

Given we just got a couple of picks last deadline for Carter who we figured was a near immoveable contract, I'd say it's more than reasonable a team would pony up a third at the deadline for a top nine forward who can clearly still play and contribute. At 50% retained he's $1.35 million, which is about $220,000 in actual cap hit for the remainder of the season by the trade deadline.

Why not just waive then? Leave the last retention spot kings have incase they actually need? (Kings still retaining on Carter right?)

Teams can retain on up to three contracts per season. We only have retention on Carter right now so we have two spots.

Blake and Co. have been clear about messaging that they feel the rebuild is over. This season is just as much about making the playoffs as anything. And making the playoffs can be a really important part of development too.

If he would be blocking an actual roster spot, I agree. But right now, the reality is the Kings are competing for the playoffs. If they make the playoffs, having more experience is better in a pinch. To me, it makes less sense to force youth in a roster spot during the playoffs because you don't have any other able bodies - it's just poor planning and mismanagement of depth.

Going forward, they should waive + assign to Ontario. Make use of the current roster spots to rotate the youth and give them experience.

If they struggle in the playoffs, AA can be brought up. Conversely, he can also help Ontario, since a lot of good talent has been called up to the NHL and the AHL team could use success.

Trading him for picks is counterintuitive to organizational direction, as he wouldn't bring much value in a trade.

For sure AA could (pointwise) help Ontario, but I don't want that they send that kind of player there. Athanasiou is a pretty selfish and defensively unreliable player. And if Reign's coaching staff doesn't give him enough ice-time (= 1st PP and 1st line EV-time) he will be one unhappy locker roomwhiner.

Lias Andersson played well last season, when he was sent down. Lias Andersson to Ontario, yes please. Andreas Athanasiou to Ontario, no thanks.

Absolutely. I was being glib… I want him gone. It’s nothing against him but he doesn’t fit and I don’t think it’s a good thing having waived NHL players around the place (especially as I don’t know how he’d take it),

QB deserves to be in the NHL, no question. I thought Fagemo though was pretty impressive in his first game. It's only 1 game of course, but honestly he looked pretty flat in ONT this year so it was good to see. You're most likely right in that he might be out once BL is back, but good first showing for him.

If Lemieux is back next game I’d like to try Fagemo-Turcotte-Brown. I like Kupari but he needs to sit for a bit, needs to find ways to use his speed more than he does.

Guys want to feel old? I was going down a elite prospects rabbit hole and pretty sure I stumbled upon one of Brownie’s kids.

You look at the trades so far since the start of the season, and other than the Eichel trade, which was a special circumstance, we're talking about cheap minor league depth moving around. That's it. This isn't 20 years ago, when you could trade AA just because you feel like it. Just to change things up if nothing else. Those types of deals today are very rare. The cap has simply killed those trades.

The most likely scenario when AA is ready to go, especially if the Kings are sticking around in the playoff conversation, is AA is back in the lineup, or at the very least on the active roster, and the easiest contract to send down to Ontario is who he replaces. So whoever they deem as the least important ELC guy is the one that will go. Then come the deadline, if they're still in the thick of the playoffs, they're not going to get rid of a veteran option. There was that one year where SJ got rid of a couple vets at the deadline but still made the playoffs, but again, that's another rare scenario.

Then if Blake adds something significant at the deadline, it'll probably cost a young forward, making AA even less likely to move than he already is.

I'm with you on this. Fagemo is one guy who I think has a lot more upside if given the opportunity.

I know that I was a big proponent of trading for Chychrun before, but I have soured a little bit on this. The biggest issue for me is the durability. You see guys like Doughty getting paid, but he has been in the lineup more often than not. It would suck for us to lose 2-3 prospects and draft picks for a guy that probably won't come anywhere near playing a full season (at least he hasn't yet, and he's 23). I'm liking the way this team is evolving and growing through the draft and smart signings/trades. We can say what we want about Blake, but Danault, Arvidsson and Edler (despite the injury) were exactly what this team needed. Durzi has been a shock for all of us and we are seeing good growth from Anderson and Bjornfot. Roy is looking like he is back to his usual self. And I don't think anyone expected Maatta to be playing like he has been.

I voted in our summer poll to get new veteran leadership this last off season and we are seeing that benefit now.

Danault has made the playoffs 2 straight seasons and Arvidsson 6 straight. I am expecting a big 2nd half from these 2 to get us in the playoffs.

Edler was making a difference too. Too bad about his injury. I was surprised how good he was playing. Miss him, but others stepping up
