From my understanding it's aimed at:
  • Extending Clague and Strand's waiver exempt status (which goes away with >10 games or >30 days on the NHL roster unless they are moved back to the AHL roster in between)
  • Ensuring we're as close to the cap as possible when moving Doughty to LTIR (which increases the amount of cap space/cap relief that accrues as the season goes on)
It's not just saving money now, it's increasing space later in the season due to the complicated way cap space accrues especially related to LTIR. Also, yes, Clague and Strand will be recalled (barring Durzi getting a shot since he's played well in Ontario as you mention).

That's what I was missing, I was thinking it was simply 30 days or 10 games after the player is waived, did not realize it had to be 30 days on the NHL roster.

Clague has a been a ppg, already tied for 2nd in points among D on the team. I doubt he goes down anytime soon. He's not setting the world on fire with his play but man, he plays 10x better in the NHL than in Ontario. He and Bjornfot have really picked it up.

Arty is staying too. He obviously scores, but his play away from the puck has been fantastic in the last 2 games. He's not shying away from dogging guys to get the puck back, you can see his confidence growing. Same with Bjornfot, he's starting to give me Voynov vibes with his puck control.

Crazy amount of callups....wonder if a team wants to see: Turcotte, Tkachev in games. Seriously, this is a ton of transactions....and AA close too.

I'd love to get Chychrun, if at all possible. if Eichel goes for Tuch, Krebs , #1 (top 10 protected) and a 2nd 2023?

Chychrun would cost, but that move would vault the Kings into the playoffs and be a threat. Whenever a team has 2, elite defensemen, they win.
No cup ever in Anaheim, without the duo of Pronger - Niedermayer. Can you image Chychrun - Doughty?

#1 2022, Vilardi, Turcotte, Grans. Would not want to lose Alex, but the Yotes will want a hefty return. Still leaves Clarke, Kupari, Kaliyev, Byfield, Chromiak, Pinelli, Thomas, Fagemo, Helenius, Madden, Faber, Kirsanov. .
I'd honestly not want to give up Kupari. He's not even getting warmed up and you can see that he has the absolute potential to be great. Such poise, power, great shot, good 200 feet, pretty physical.
No weakness, really. I can see Turcotte matching in some areas, but not all of those. He lacks that shot and pure speed. Love Alex, but Rasmus more. Sure, rather give up Madden or Fagemo,
but will not get an elite defenseman return.

I remember watching Chychrun just dictating whatever he felt like...the last few years...and absolute cannon. His 18 goals last yr would have led the Kings. Insane

Don't look now, but Durzi has 3 goals and 4 assists in 8 games and is a +5. I'm wondering if O'Donnell and Greene are having big impacts with some of these guys in terms of their development? I know Ranford has meant a great deal to our goalie development. Some of these guys might not be as bad as we think. I sure would like to see Clague stick - he's probably our best offensive D-Man right now.

Sometimes I wonder if a lot of what these players are getting from the coaches are setting a hard cap/ceiling on what they are capable of? I think the best coaches will understand what a player's potential is and push them to utilize their skillset as best they can. I imagine some guys are probably less vocal/confident coming in as a rookie and have more of a fear of making mistakes rather than imposing their will on the opposition.

Durzi had my vote for call up instead of Clague. Clague has done well though.

Been saying for awhile that Durzi was going to be the gem in the Muzzin trade.

Defensemen always seem to take a lot longer to round out their game. I'm not going to say it's a blessing in disguise that Doughty went down, but we definitely need to find out how capable some of these players are over the course of 20+ games in the NHL.

In the A, Durzi looks incredibly confident in the offensive zone. Skates well, passes well, shoots well and has a bit of nasty in him. Doesn't hesitate to scrum it up or jump in for team mates. Not really a fighter but will get in people's faces. In the D zone, he looks bad. Not Markus Phillips bad, but still pretty bad. All that being said, I think he deserves a chance with the Kings.

Sometimes if you pair these guys with the right stay-at-home defenseman it's worth it if his offensive makes up for certain defensive lapses.

Turcotte? Called up? What do I do with my hands?
Sit on them, he is likely called up for cap purposes as Doughty is placed on LTIR.

You benefit from LTIR based on cap proximity. With Athanasiou coming in and Andersson day to day, Turcotte is most likely to be sent back down tomorrow when the defensemen are recalled.

But I get the excitement!

Thanks you had to ruin all of our excitement. :sarcasm:

5 at best. I still think we should use him as a trade chip as a part of a bigger package. His reputation exceeds his on ice performance

Potential, not reputation, I would say. Neither he or Bjornfot are even close to how they project in their prime. Both are highly competitive and it takes most young defensemen a few years to see everything enough to be able to anticipate instead of react.

The one thing that really should be keeping him off the top unit is his modest puck skill. Its too much of a drain to have 25 minutes per night of overly safe, unproductive left side transition and point play. He just doesn't generate enough chances and the team would benefit from giving 6 or 7 of those minutes to a player that could provide more of a threat.

He leads the entire team in +/- and plays over 19 minutes a game. His on ice performance exceeds his reputation (whatever that is).

Hope I am wrong, I am a total mark for Turcotte.

Nope definitely makes sense all the moving around for cap reasons. Turcotte will get his time. I want him to marinate in the minors then come up when ready and smoke the league. Maybe not smoke but make a big impact.

It does mean something that it's him that gets the call up, over all the other guys. It's a little extra money and acknowledgement that he's playing well and at the top of the list.
