Hmm, I was watching and talking about the US-Fin games, are you waiting for the rerun? He and Caufield can’t have played 20 minutes combined, and Turcotte had one shift in the 3rd.
Also, on the question if he is supposed to be an offensive player. Of course not. It’s best of one games. You have 1-2 lines that have to get it done offensively. Many players that have very big roles offensively for their junior teams have to take a step back and play a loyal team game for a team to succeed. Everyone knows that.
Beecher, Caufield, Turcotte and the Ds are called out a lot. But that is just really misguided. The US’ top lines was played a ton and sure a puck wiz like Zegras created a few chances — but him and Wahlstrom and Kaliyev and co gave up 3x as much as they created and many big big chances.
It’s easy yo complain on the Ds for US but Zegras must have stickhandled and lost the puck 10 times on the offensive blueline. You can’t do that against this finish team. If anything, Jones created a better chance than Zegras did all game and had zero give aways.
If Turcotte isn’t there to produce I don’t know what he’s there for. That’s kind of a crazy argument. He didn’t play much because he’s done nothing all tourney. That’s why he didn’t play much.

this is accurate abut i think also a slanted take;
there is a less extreme way to see it
there are 5 superpowers in international hockey at this level
to me, the only time any of those teams under-perform is when a team from outside those 5 makes the Semis
by definition, (at least) 1 of the 5 will always be eliminated before the Semis
USA lost a 1 goal game (excluding the ENG) to 1 peer power in round-robin,
and a 1-0 shutout to defending champs in knockout.
to my understanding, the OT win vs the host team didn't hurt them in standings, Canada had tie-breaker via head-to-head

I'll take that one step farther. During big international hockey tournaments (WJC, Olympics, World Cup, etc.) Canadians are the hockey equivalent of Patriot fans.

Well, in my own personal experience, it's because they are incredibly rude and obnoxious about winning. And god forbid something goes wrong and they don't, they find something or someone to blame and are terrible about it. Like, say, Max Comtois last year after he missed on a penalty shot
Don’t work like that, hockey is a team game. Everyone must buy in to the role they are handed.
Ola he was playing next to Caufield those guys aren’t defensive specialists that were brought in to kill penalties. They played powerplay got top 9 mins. They’re supposed to produce. They teamed up on one goal. They did nothing so they got less and less ice time. How are u gonna say Alex Turcotte was not supposed to perform on this team and put up pts? That’s silly.
I agree, Turcotte wasn't on the team to be a checking forward. He was very good in an offensive role for the U18 squad last year, is having a good offensive debut season at Wisconsin, and was being counted on to supply offense in that spot behind Zegras. Instead, he showed nothing, really. Not just him, though, lots of US kids--Drury was a disappointment, York did nothing, Samuelsson as a returning player was shit, Caufield was a huge disappointment, and despite having 5 points Wahlstrom was garbage. Guys like Wahlstrom that have been there before and are playing in the NHL/AHL have no reason to not be dominant. Lots of blame to go around.
You are talking about the tournament, I was referring to one game in which that line barely played.
I am sorry for being so anal about this, but I often get annoyed when a few selected scape goats are blamed for something they had NO part in. It’s the same thing when every game it’s Glass and Girardi’s fault for us losing, while we more or less were beaten across the board.
The US — clearly — lost this game because the top lines didn’t get it done. Certainly not because of Turcotte getting ONE shift in the 3rd lol.
Time and time again Zegras, Pinot, Wahlstrom, Kaliyev and co skated right into the chest of a deep collected defense. They are everyone’s darlings, but you must be much better than that.
Also, re Caufield and co. It’s their turn to carry this team next season.

This is what blows my mind. I haven’t seen a lot of him, but in all the clips I’ve watched since he was drafted, his skating looks like a legitimate asset. How the hell was it considered a liability less than a year ago?
Who cares about the WJC. Bunch of kids who aren't physically deve4loped playing. Used to make a big deal about it. Now I don't care. Dawes dominated there and he turned out to be crap.

Same here, but I'm basing this off of the report done by @Mark Edwards and his staff whose opinions I hold in high esteem.
He'd be more qualified to answer this, but generally speaking sometimes a little technical tweak/physical maturation is all it takes. There is no question he goes round 1 in a re-draft.
Sure, but Zegras along with Wahlstrom and Pinto, in so far that they couldn’t get the job done in their goto roles, are maybe the biggest culprit for the US not playing anymore. They are the ones that looked like clowns stickhandling into the chest of the Finns.
Just saying that I don’t buy the talk of blaming the PK specialist D and 3rd line LW that sits the entire 3rd when you lose 1-0 against a vastly inferior team talent wise. And on top of that, Knight was by far the best player on that team.

I'm with @Ola 100% on Turcotte. I haven't watched enough of the tournament to comment on his play overall, but he was barely playing that game and in very few minutes managed to make a lot more happen than any US forward I saw except probably Pinto.
