Yeah, I'll buy Stepan being the best pick. And that's kind of the problem--feels like in ten-plus years, we should have lucked our way into someone better, if nothing else. But I digress, as this is not the right thread for this. :)

I’ve posted this elsewhere. Luck plays a role, but I chalk it up to draft philosophy negating any chance to get lucky. The Rangers clearly value character, and some semblance of a 200 foot game more than they do high end skill. In short, they like to play it safe, which by definition limits both upside and downside. It’s how you end up drafting good, but not great, players (Stepan, Kreider, etc.). Not having super high picks plays a role as well obviously, but you listed a bunch of late pick homeruns.

Kravtsov was the first time I’ve see. Them depart from this philosophy in a long time, maybe since 2007 with Cherry but that pick was a no brainer regardless of philosophy. It’ll be interesting (probably infuriating) to see how they respond if the VK pick ends up burning them.

Meet Sweden's Terror Twins (and the Rangers pick who helps guide them) - TheHockeyNews

Henriksson on the other hand is well-versed down the middle and that’s a great advantage for the Swedes.

It’s incredible to play with Karl, he’s such a smart center,” Holtz said. “Great hockey sense, great skater and he can shoot the puck also, so it’s fantastic to play with him.

And the adulation goes both ways.
They are incredibly skilled, it’s easy to play with them,” Henriksson said. “They think hockey very well but they’re not the same players: Holtz is more of a sniper and Lucas is more of a playmaker so it’s really good."

Holtz should be on the Rangers' radar for sure.

Also goes without mentioning, but Lundkvist should be just about as untouchable in a trade as any other prospect we have in the system.

Kimmo Timonen is who he reminds me of. He may not end up as dynamic and explosive as Timonen was in his day, but the stylistic comparisons and smarts are there.

At the same time, he is really standing out on the big stage. If moved, he would be valued accordingly.

Unless I'm over looking someone, Miller's leading his team in TOI so far

And Jones is 4th in TOI for the defense. He's getting 2nd pairing minutes, while Cam York is getting spare minutes on the PP. That's a nice feather in his cap based on draft status.
Part of me wonders if they're doing the WJC thing of playing the older player over the younger player and sort of like letting York be around and get a taste before he has a huge role next year as a returning guy, not that I'm complaining or think Jones hasn't earned it over York

Number 7 on USA is consistently out of position. Good of him to be willing to block shots, but they can give Key a better partner at even strength.

I thought Regula would make the team over him, but c'est la vie I guess

Should have went for the right shot d. First goal against was a lefty having to turn around on his offside to get the easy toss and missed.

Shortsighted move by USA. Theres a reason why teams lineup lefty righty

I have a hard time seeing seniority playing a part considering that Jones is only 2.5 months older and it was York that played for the NTDP.
