so if the season is over our draft positions are 13 and 21/22ish?

I’d definitely be OK with Nybeck at 13 and Hirvonen at 21?

Panarin-Hirvonen-Nybeck would be a fun line. :)

Hard to see Hirvonen getting drafted 1st round.
He got Lukko player's stick on his eye in Ässät vs Lukko game some weeks ago.

Hirvonen's game ended on that injury and he went locker-room and didn't return on the ice.
Hirvonen's SM liiga team Porin Ässät hasn't told yet how bad Hirvonen's eye injury is / was.
So there is still risk serious injury but that's pure speculation for now.

Hirvonen is small ( 5'9 ) center but he probably ends up a winger if he makes it in NHL.

I have really not seen enough of Hirvonen to have much of an opinion on him. How is his skating? The clips I've seen, there isn't a ton of skating going on.

I've seen a lot more of Nybeck and likes him a lot. I just tossed Hirvonen's name out there because these kids that are <5'10 still seem to be facing a lot of negative bias. Just like DeBrincat. For me all that matters is how you skate and if you compete in physical battles. Marchand is 5'9 and definitely one of the hardest guys to handle in the league physically.

Its however not that unusual that player's <5'10 lacks a bit of top-end speed. Its just the law of physics, you gain when going west-east-south. But when going the length of the ice, they have a shorter stride. But there are of course still exceptions and many <5'10 forwards who has sufficient speed. Not sure if Hirvonen qualifies, but Nybeck certainly does.

Zary at 13 and Gunler at 23

Tankathon has Zary at 12 and Gunler at 14

Draftsite has Zary at 15 and Gunler at 17

My nhldraft has Zary at 11 and Gunler at 12

Sportingnews has Zary at 23 and Gunler at 25

Nhl.com has Zary at 25 and Gunler at 23

Bob Mckenzie has Zary at 17 and Gunler at 27.

So if you average it out Zary is at 17 and Gunler is at 19. Unfortunately I dont think we walk with both, but I think getting Mysak at 23 is realistic.

But another thing to ponder is this in 2017 Philadelphia was scheduled to pick 13 and jumped to 2, in 18 Carolina was scheduled to pick 11th and also jumped to 2, last year Chicago was scheduled to pick 12th and jumped to 3. So while nothing is concrete the last 3 drafts have shown that teams who finish in that 12-13 range wind up in the lottery, so ponder that for a minute as well.

Yeah, once you get outside the top-5, I don't really put too much emphasis/value into draft rankings

If someone is bored and wants a fun project:

Average out several mock drafts/rankings and then have people vote on who they would take at 13.

Then average our those sources again, and have people vote on who they would take at 23.

Ill bite.

Tanakathon has Sanderson going at 13, and Perrault going at 23

Draftsite has Mercer going at 13 and Amirov at 23

Mynhldraft has Holloway going at 13 and Lapierre going at 23

Sportingnews has Amirov going 13 and Zary at 23

Nhl.com has Mercer at 13 and Gunler at 23

Bob Mckenzie has Mercer at 13 and Perrault at 23.

So for pick 13 you can probably throw out Sanderson he's a defensemen who we have plenty of. So that leaves you with Mercer,Holloway, and Amirov

Statwise

Mercer a RW has 24 g and 36 a in 42 games playing for Drummondville and Chicoutimi in the QMJHL a league whos numbers are usually inflated.

Holloway who plays all 3 positions has 8 g and 9 a in 35 games for Wisconsin

Amirov is an LW who had 10g and 12 assists in the Russian junior league.

IMHO this is a tough tough call. All have positive and negative attributes all are on the other side of 200 lbs, and they all may not be NHL ready. Holloway does play center sometimes, but hev probably wont at the NHL level. IDK its a toss up here. If you play it safe you draft Mercer ????

23 is a little more interesting.

You have Perrault,Amirov,Lapierre,Gunler, and Zary.

If you ask me I rank them like this

Zary (center who can do it all)
Gunler (explosive winger)
Perrault(center albeit small)
Amirov (ppg winger but where do you put him 3rd line maybe)
Lapierre ( Has been falling and is injured too oftyen. May wind up a 2nd round steal)

I think that if they viewed Sanderson as BPA, they take him. Mercer is from the Q and the Rangers have not shown that they love dipping into that league. Of the names that are left, Holloway seems to be the package that Gorton and Quinn like.

I'd be fine with Perrault at 23.

Questions for my draft experts...with the prospect season for all intents being over, we will not have the benefit of late scouting and important games. It seems like in the past, there were a number of players who were late risers. That opportunity Will not exist this year.

What effect does that have on the draft?

I don't think much. I think scouts see trends and where players end up going, interview their coaches on their ethics outside of the rink/in the gym and shit. Think it'll bum some players out because of the "what if" factor in like tournaments and playoffs, but I mean they had all season to prove their worth, IMO.
